THE U POWER WALLET STORY
On January 12, 2011, I was casually lying in bed watching a local news station. The news station conducted a special report titled, “Are ATM’s Making You Sick”. This report peaked my interest because there is an inside joke amongst my family, and friends to never ask me for cash, because I never carry it, I will have to go to an ATM.
In the report a team of researchers took samples, from the buttons on a string of high-traffic automatic teller machines, and compared them with seats of nearby public lavatories.
The end result was that the samples indicated that both the ATM buttons, and the public toilet seats harbored the same pseudomonades, and bacillus, bacteria. These germs will not kill you but will cause you serious stomach distress. I will never touch these devices again with my bare fingers!
With this information, I began to develop a new method to make information entry on ATM’s. I thought out the steps, when I would use an ATM:
- Remove my wallet from my pocket
- Remove my bankcard from my wallet
- Swipe my bankcard at ATM
- Use my fingers to enter my PIN
After these steps I was left holding my wallet in my hand. “Eureka!” I can make a wallet with an ergonomic design, that will make input on ATM keypads. What about the ATM’s that require you to touch the screen? I guessed that they had to work by the electricity in ones body. I did some researching and discovered, that there are two types of touch screens that are prominently in use, capacitive and resistive.
Capacitive screens work from a low thermal electrical current, from ones touch, to allow you to make information input on its screen. Resistive screens are two screens, one overlaying the other. When you touch the top screen, it lets the computer know what information you need on the second screen. Armed with this information I began to create my wallet.
I found some conductive fabric on the web, that is used for making those light up tee shirts and hats you sometimes see people wear. The fabric is impregnated with nanoparticles of silver. Because silver is a metal (Periodic Table symbol is Ag) it will pass a low thermal current, and it will deflect radio waves. “Wow!” I had everything that I needed in this fabric. I had to have this fabric for my wallet prototype.
I ordered a few yards to test. My test went as planned. The conductive fabric passed a low thermal electrical current from my touch. It was time to dust off the sewing machine.
I created my first prototype from gluing a piece of conductive fabric on a billfold wallet that I purchased from the Dollar General. I constructed the second prototype from some cotton fabric and a strip of conductive fabric. I created my third prototype from all conductive fabric material. I immediately began to receive wallet request from family and friends.
I knew it was time for me to speak to an attorney to protect my idea. I spoke to attorneys and realize that I could not afford their patent fees. I didn’t let that stop me. So I studied all the patents that I could for a few weeks. I got the nerve up to give writing the patent myself a try. It took me a month to write the provisional and non-provisional patent applications for the U Power wallet.
It was now time to find a manufacturing partner to help me to professionally create the U Power wallet. I found a manufacturing partner in New York City who was eager to take on the challenge of working with the unique conductive fabric. It took them one week to create the fourth U Power wallet prototype.
Although making touch-less information entry on filthy ATM’s was my primary objective. As I went about my daily life I began to realize it wasn’t just ATM’s that I had to make information entry at. There are elevator buttons, parking meter kiosk, and the supermarket checkout kiosks. Even at my favorite family amusement center Dave and Buster’s, there are touch screen video games. Touch devices are everywhere now a days!

How Does The U Power Wallet Work:

The funds raised through the U Power wallet Kickstarter project will be used to professionally manufacture the U Power line. The U Power line includes two different wallet styles and colors. The funds will enable me to procure (radiofrequency blocking fabric etc.) raw materials, it will also help with the cost associated with a large scale production run.
I have traveled to New York over twenty times in the pass six months to meet accessory manufactures. I have chosen the perfect partner to manufacturer the U Power wallet line. They have over 25 years of experience manufacturing accessories and have the resources to procure all the raw materials to construct the U Power wallet line. They also were very impress with the functionality of the U Power wallet. As well I am impress with the samples they have constructed.
For two years I have streamlined the process to bring the U Power wallet line to market: designing them, partnering with a professional manufacturer, to creating a logo and writing the patent to protect my intellectual property.
To prepare for a large order I have procured the services of a international logistics carrier who will, after my inspection of the U Power wallet line will store, and ship each wallet to its destination.

The challenges of the U Power kickstarter will be, getting the word out, and convincing the Kickstarter community to support the U Power Wallet project. To reach as many people as possible, I am asking everyone I know, friends, family, and the blog world to help me get the word out.
Once the funding is in place, my number one challenge will be logistics. I will work very hard to ensure every Kickstarter contributor receives their rewards. My number two challenge will be managing the U Power wallet manufacturer to have every wallet constructed with the best raw materials, shipped on time, and constructed to my standards.
I know depending on outside help is another challenge but, with my business management skills, and my working relationship with the U Power wallet manufacturer I fill very confident that the U Power wallet campaign will be a success.

The U Power was designed with a ergonomic style to make touch-less information entry on any object that requires you to use your fingers to operate them. Because Kickstarter prohibits health and beauty items, I could not include the full benefits of U Power's fabric.
