Castle Ravenstein. Original home to the powerful Hohengrem family and the mad sorcerer king -- Nacatheb. Now, lair and seat of power of the powerful Duke of Marthingen. Rumored prison and torture hall where countless "trouble makers" have disappeared to and never returned. With six levels, Castle Ravenstein stretches from the tops of the towers to the haunted corners of the catacombs below.
Now, Darkraven Games brings you this castle for your Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) and miniatures in stunning detail. Laid out on 6 separate levels/maps - each measuring a massive 36" by 48" with a superimposed 1" grid, this beautiful, color castle map collection covers SEVENTY-TWO SQUARE FEET, giving you what might possibly be the first such castle in such detail for your miniature and gaming needs!
Lay out adventures for your players, use it as a base of operations, or claim it for your own high-level character and "redecorate" according to your own needs.
This is supposed to be the "mother of all" castle projects. And depending on its success, more will be offered in the future.
WHY THIS PROJECT
Most castles players use for their role-playing games are either very poor approximations of what castles are or are just amazingly small and have no resemblance to their real-life counterparts. Miniature models can't come close to representing the several levels and are often dramatic simplifications of these structures. Representing a fortification almost 240 feet in length, Castle Ravenstein might be the first which comes close to approximating the size and detail of a real castle. Should this project work out, even larger castles will be created which come even closer to re-creating their real-life counterparts to help you bring your games to life. We might even consider offering a print version of future castles, towns, and fortifications on such a scale.
Castle Ravenstein is perched on a hill and sports an impressive gate house, two stables, visitors quarters, barracks, servants' quarters, a temple, four towers, an armory, plenty of room for residence, and a massive keep--suitable headquarters for a duke with a main hall for feasts and audiences, residence, and plenty of storage in case of a siege. Most rooms are beautifully decorated by our top notch 2D artists. When looking at the blacksmith's workshop, you will know it is a blacksmith's workshop.
Underneath the castle -- on the subterranean map -- you will find prison cells, secret passages, and torture chambers. You will also find a complex of ancient catacombs -- and the tomb of the great wizard king Nacatheb who still haunts its dark halls.
Because of the scale of the castle (six 36" by 48" maps!), it will be delivered in digital format. This allows its use with any VTT (virtual table top) which allows you to import a background JPG or it can be printed out at any print shop. To ease its use for VTTs you will get one file in 72 dpi format. And to allow for printing, it will also be delivered in 200 dpi (very high resolution!) files which you can take it to any print shop and have printed out in all of its glory. Originally, we were going to offer the castle in printed version only. However, we didn't think we could find nearly enough people willing to spend $130+ on a project like this and so have stuck with the digital format. If there is enough demand, it is possible that future projects like this will be offered as print versions.
PRINTING THE CASTLE
Backers purchasing the files will be encouraged to print the high quality files at any print shop. This will allow them to use the castle with their friends and miniatures.
The castle files will also be delivered in two versions. One with all furniture and interior accessories -- and one without. This will be done so that players can use the "bare" version to "redecorate" the castle for their needs as required. This kind of flexibility which several of our testers wanted would have been impossible had the project been delivered in printed format.
WHO WE ARE
The designer of the castle map has lived in Europe for well over a decade and spent countless hours crawling over, through, and around castles and reading about them. This castle is based loosely on one close to him which is just small enough to actually fit on a map this size.

Risks and challenges
Because this project will be delivered digitally the risks are low. Our previous Kickstarter, Cthulhu Soundscape + Darkraven Fantasy Soundscapes has now been tested with about a dozen recipients who are all reporting a 0% failure rate in unpacking the files after we used a dedicated uploader to our current distribution service, DropSend. We expect delivery of the Cthulhu Soundscape and Darkraven Fantasy Soundscape to be completed within 4 days of the launch of this Kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
