About

The 8th Continent: Lunar Destiny game is an indie video game created by the nonprofit Innovate Our World (IOW). How would you like to run an entire continent? You and your bots are competing against others on the next step of the Final Frontier, the Moon! Oculus Rift compatible too!

Money raised will go directly to alpha game development and, if we reach some stretch goals, to making the game even better.

Supporters can also get out-of-game rewards too, like their name taken to the Moon! Yes, all backers $20 or more will see their name taken to the Moon during the 2016 Astrobotic mission to explore a lunar cave in Lacus Mortis.

For $125 you can send any small picture, note, company logo - basically anything that can be printed to the Moon and get pictures of your memento's MoonMail capsule on the Moon's surface on the same Astrobotic mission!

The 8th Continent will be available for Windows, Mac, Google Cardboard, and Oculus Rift.

Racing rovers for millions, exploring for buried riches, employing robots and 3-D printing to build a futuristic city - this isn’t happening in the far flung reaches of Earth, this is happening on the Moon! You get to be among the first explorers to search for valuable materials and create your own empire. But it isn’t easy! With the physical hazards of working on the Moon’s surface, getting funding for your operation, and competing against other companies and governments, can you be the one to make it big?

Not long after the first private teams landed on the Moon to compete for the Google Lunar X Prize and just a few years after the Shackleton Crater Disaster, governments and industry on Earth decided to form a new public-private company called Luna and Asteroid Resource Management (LARM). LARM maps the Moon for possible resource deposits, conducts competitive races for those willing to work the Moon's surface for resources, and enforces the agreement both on the Moon and on Earth. Using advanced rovers, company teams compete for the best lots so they can extract, transport, and sell their resources to companies and governments back on Earth. You are one of those brave pioneers who wants to make their fortune like the prospectors of the old American West. Your investors are behind you, at least until they determine if you’re the person who can beat the competition.

LARM sent a series of resource mapping probes to find areas that should be explored for resources to be processed and sent back to Earth orbit. By virtue of the LARM pact, you have an initial plot of land to start your adventure. You and other companies have signed an agreement to use information and compete for new sites via rover races. Each resource site will enable multiple teams to get their plots of lunar land to explore and build on to see who can do the best.

Good luck with natural hazards, equipment breakdowns, transport issues, and, most of all, your competitors, who supposedly play by the LARM rules. Do you have the smarts, skills, and tenacity to build your destiny?

Below is the initial alpha gameplay description. We’re currently prototyping the entire gameplay experience but we want to give you a taste of some of our early game elements so check out our tech demos at the end of this section!

The game begins when you choose a company to support you. There are 4 different companies to choose from, each with their own respective bonuses. One may be better at rover racing, while another can build structures more quickly, and another is able to gain bonus resources with each successful excavation.

After the player chooses a company, they then start off with a beginning investment that they go to the Moon with. They can use this funds to either customize their rover so that it will perform better in the initial race or save it for later investments when building on their land. The players then race for the right to develop property sites. All property sites are different and the first place winner picks their property first, the second placing rover chooses second, etc.. so you want to win! Placing in the race also determines how much money you earn from the different companies supporting you.

After you partake in the initial race, you can start building your civilization. There are many different things to do in this stage of the game:

  • Build structures on your site (requires currency and resources)

  • Gather necessary resources through exploration of the lunar surface such as water ice for rocket fuel or platinum for use back on Earth

  • Improve your rover for exploration or future races

  • Contact Earth for more funding and research

  • Send resources back to Earth and earn money

  • Periodic races that earn you more land if you win

  • Complete objectives from companies to gain bonuses, alliances, money and resources

  • Compete with other companies for lunar territory

  • Plus many more!

Once you complete your initial objectives, there will be many more opportunities to continue to race, build, and develop resources so you can beat your competition!

We've created some tech demos for you to play with. They will give you a sense of what we're building, starting with basic racing and building. For the alpha, we will improve the lunar landscape to better reflect actual places such as the South Pole and potential lunar cave locations. At the same time, we will add many new rovers, habitats and other buildings, rockets, equipment, and more custom items beyond what you see here. Plus this functionality and more will be better integrated into a single gameplay experience. Enjoy!

Creating out of this world games is core to Innovate Our World’s mission as a nonprofit to inspire players to do great things, such as exploring and living on places like the Moon. Proceeds from this game will go towards helping disadvantaged students achieve their higher education and career goals through IOW programs that give them the tools to achieve and innovate.

This first Kickstarter is only the beginning. We’ll give you the ability to buy in early and cheap (but not quite as cheap as today), with updates for life after March. The more we raise, the more we can pay designers, coders, artists, and others to add all of the functionality you request. So please spread the word!

Risks and challenges

This initial funding campaign will provide funds to pay the team over the summer, which will help us achieve an initial alpha version by September. Without it, development will slow down. We are targeting fall of this year for getting on to Steam, which is around the time VR headsets will be hitting the consumer market for the holidays. We intend to be at the front of this new wave so this campaign is key to getting us there.
