About this project
The Realm of Thyïlia is a free, online role-playing game being developed by a team of new and upcoming artists, inspired by classical RPGs!
Our vision is to create a Role-Playing Game like they should be! We are part of a generation of kids who grew up in the 90's playing games like Ultima Online, Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot. And although today's MMORPGs borrow aspects from those games, to us, these modern games have lost the true feel and soul of just what made the classics so enjoyable. For this reason, a group of like-minded people joined up to start this project, to create a free, online RPG that incorporates the things we loved so much: the risk, the freedom and the adventure! So if you've been grinding away at World of Warcraft for 10 hours straight, trying to get the Everlasting Mystical Blade of the Forgotten Ancients, log out and join our project!
If you feel you have a great idea that would make this game even funner, any general suggestions (gameplay, environment, quests, etc), or just something that you would love to see in the game, please let us know and we'd be more than happy to discuss it and maybe even include it in the Realm of Thyïlia!
The Realm of Thyïlia will be playable through a pseudo-3D, top-down, Diablo-style view. This will still allow full appreciation of all the 3D animation that we will include. The game will have stylized textures and feature atmospheric elements (slight distortions such as fog, heat) that will add to the realistic feel and viewing-pleasure of the world. We also have a dedicated sound engineer who will create atmospheric soundtracks and music to accompany you in your adventure in the Realm of Thyïlia.
In terms of gameplay, we have decided to drop the horrible, life-consuming grinding element present in so many RPGs. Furthermore, all items present in the game will be craftable. We have done this to remove the clear disadvantage that newer players would have over more senior players, and to focus on skill being the main determinant of how strong and powerful a player is. The fighting mechanics will be inspired by classic RPGs but we have also taken some of the better features from newer games, to combine all of the funnest elements! We will focus strongly on creating the most satisfying PvP experience, but those expecting entertaining PvE will not be disappointed. There will not be any pre-defined character classes to choose from the beginning, only a set of skills that any player can improve on. In the initial release of the game, 3 playable races will be available: the Esulian, the Iverrian and the Torthan. Each of these races will have specific racial traits and qualities.
Regarding character development, we wanted to give as much freedom to the player as possible, to avoid having to take a decision at the very beginning of the game that might be regretted later. Therefore, in the Realm of Thyïlia, you can be whatever you want to be. You can start out as a bow-wielding adventurer, continue as a carpenter, or if you change your mind and decide that neither adventuring or carpentry is your passion in life, switch to becoming a wizard, tailor, tamer, alchemist or even a beggar! In the Realm of Thyïlia, you decide.
In terms of the explorable world, we will start in the initial release with 3 zones: Syndalen Woods, the Greenlands, the Iveranna Stretch and 1 town: Everdrop, where your player will start. Once this part of the world is released, we will expand as much as possible, as soon as possible. The more donations we receive, the more time and effort we can dedicate to game development, therefore the bigger and more exciting the world will be!
Hope that we've given you some idea of how the Realm of Thyïlia will look and feel, yet we've only just skimming the surface! We have tons of great ideas that we're looking into, and would be very grateful for any feedback as to what you miss from older games and would like to see in the Realm of Thyïlia. Because, after all, we're building a game that we want to be as fun as possible for YOU!
We decided to go with Kickstarter because it is a very innovative way to receive funds from the community; it is straight forward and makes it easy to connect and propose ideas to a specific audience. Most of the projects on Kickstarter are passion-driven and that is exactly what we are looking for!
Furthermore, we are very pleased to finally be part of this special community and we have decided that 5% of our total budget will be put into other Kickstarter projects, in order to make their dreams come true as well!
Our team consists of 5 lead team members, and many volunteers who are willing to contribute to making this adventure come to life. We are all very motivated and big fans of classical role playing and can't wait to get to work!
Kenneth is the lead programmer. He will be in charge of all the programming and the mechanics behind the game. The team came up with original game mechanics incorporating both the new and interesting elements from modern day RPGs and the older aspects of classic RPGs all bound together by our 'never-done-before" system that will guarantee awesome gameplay for those old-school RPG lovers.
Andreas is the lead 3D artist. He will be creating all the models and textures for the Realm of Thyïlia. He will mostly be focusing on stylized models and textures to give the player a pleasing visual experience combined with special effects! He's been working in 3D for a few years now, and is extremely hyped about working and expanding his techniques when it comes to low-poly video game models.
Aleksandra is responsible for all the concept art and illustrations. She will be designing the characters as well as items, architecture and landscapes. Her job is to provide the 3D artist with enough inspiration to successfully create a stylized look and feel so the gamer can really enjoy all the hidden aspects the Realm of Thyïlia has to offer. Aleksandra will also be creating illustrations, comics and other downloadables so you can follow the development of the game whilst getting to know the story better!
Markus is in charge of the PR and Marketing. He will get the message out there by promoting the game on many social networks and handling the blogs and twitter accounts as well as focusing on getting people interested in the final product. From word of mouth to advertising, Markus will be doing the most possible to get everyone as hyped about the game as we are!
Aaron is the sound-effects and soundtrack guy. He will be recording and altering all the sound-effects for the game, which will contribute to the overall atmospheric look and feel of the game.
We also have many people willing to help out and take part in the adventure: we have voice actors, illustrators and musicians all lined up to help us tell the story and make the game become a reality!

The game will run on all PC, Mac and Linux operating systems.
Joseph asked : Will the game be skilled based or level based? Progressive or Investment? Class based or unrestricted? Blood and guts or colourful rainbow inspired stuff? Sandbox or Theme Park?
The game will have somewhat more complex mechanics when it comes to leveling, it will be a combination of levels and skills, with a main focus on skills. It's more investment than progressive. It's unrestricted, not class based. It's more of a stylized atmospheric feel, so it will be more grim and gloomy than colorful rainbows.. Sandbox when it comes to what you want to be or do in the game, Theme park when it comes to everything we will implement to keep you busy.
