Hi Kickstarter Community!
Welcome to the Ethos Planetware Campaign!
With Planetware, our goal is simple -- to merge smart design with responsible, sustainable production in an everyday product where both are so often overlooked.
Like many big ideas, Planetware was born over a fine meal among friends. In between bites, we were discussing the design philosophy of cradle-to-cradle -- a sustainable model that produces virtually zero waste and is considerate of the next generation. We began to think: Where does this plate come from? What's it made of? What happens when I'm done with it? These are questions we rarely ask.
Then came the proverbial lightbulb moment -- design an everyday product that not only looks great but is also great for the earth. And where better to start than the kitchen table? After all, everybody eats, right?
We set out to discover if sustainable tableware already existed and found that while some products were compostable, they were still riddled with chemicals, dyes, and plastics that we did not want anywhere near our food or our landfills.
We knew we could do better, so we spent nearly two years developing a line of tableware that is made from natural, sustainable materials and devoid of artificial materials or dyes.
The proud result is Planetware -- a full tableware line of cups, plates and bowls that not only looks good, but you can feel good using. Made of sustainable bamboo, rice husk, and corn, it's microwave and dishwasher safe, shatterproof, and free of synthetic dyes and chemicals. Planetware’s slim design is also uniquely stackable, freeing up space in your crowded cabinets. And should you ever throw them away, they're completely compostable, leaving zero impact on the planet.
NATURAL INGREDIENTS: Planetware is made from eco-friendly, sustainable materials -- bamboo, rice husk, and corn and colored with vegetable dye. Available in 5 colors: Elderberry Red, Alder Orange, Sassasfras Yellow, Matcha Green, and Natural.
THOUGHTFUL DESIGN: With heat and pressure we mold these ingredients into tableware that's alive with natural grain and texture. Smooth curves, flowing lines, and stackable design add just enough flair to be a conversation starter.
SYNTHETIC-FREE: We looked high and low to find all-natural dye sources that were safe enough to eat and eat off of. We discovered that 100 percent all-natural vegetable dyes create colors that really pop! You're welcome for helping you step up your instagram food snap game. No filter needed.
EASY CARE: Microwave it. Throw it in the dishwasher. Stack it. Done.
ULTRA DURABLE: Don’t let Planetware’s sleek, slim design fool you -- our cups, plates, and bowls are shatterproof and will survive any drop. (Tell your toddler to give it his best shot.) The durable natural materials can also withstand the harshest everyday wear-and-tear. Don’t believe us? We’re throwing in a two-year warranty.
COMPOSTABLE: Planetware is really built to last -- and we hope you'll enjoy our cups, plates, and bowls for years to come -- but if you do ever throw them away, you can feel good knowing all of our products are completely compostable, resulting in zero waste.
Did you know that Americans throw away roughly 23 billion paper cups every year? Become part of the solution!
Our eye-catching travel mug features a 100 percent natural hemp sleeve for grip and a tight-sealing bamboo lid to prevent spills and maintain temperature. It's an eco-friendly way to enjoy your favorite drink that's perfect at home, in the office, or on the road. (Also available in all five Planetware colors: Elderberry, Alder, Matcha, Sassafras, or Natural.)
Each Planetware Place Setting includes:
Planetware Cup: Our 13.5 oz (400ml) cup measures the same as our travel mug and is perfect for hot or cold liquids come mealtime.
Planetware 6” Bowl: Perfect for soups, cereal, or your favorite ramen, our bowl is easy to grip with one hand and good for hot or cold use.
Planetware 8" Salad Plate: Imagine this -- a serving of plants, atop a plate made of plants. Our salad plate is just the right size for any opening course or late-night snack.
Planetware 11" Dinner Plate: Because everyone loves the main course. The grandaddy of the Planetware line allows for a generous helping of whatever’s cookin’.
We've had a few requests to better depict the white color vs. the natural color. Check out the photo below:
This project has been in the works for more than two years. At the start of it, I was working as a food-and-beverage manager at a major hotel chain. Needless to say, I was around a lot of cups and plates. Over dinner with a friend (and now business partner!) we were discussing where everyday items come from, and our focus turned to the tableware we were actually using.
We looked at the current tableware market, and knew we could create a product that looks great, is great for the earth, and champions the philosophy of living sustainably.
We've already locked down the raw materials, vegetable dye sources, product design, and manufacturer. We've also already obtained the necessary FDA certifications and testing for food safety. All that remains is to purchase the product molds and make our first real production run.
Since we've already put in the ground work, our plan is relatively straightforward. We'll be keeping up with the campaign progress, and immediately start producing Planetware once the campaign ends. We've added in 6 weeks of buffer time -- just to account for any hiccups. This isn't our first campaign, however - check out our previous campaign for the Bongo Bamboo Bluetooth Speaker!
Risks and challenges
With any project comes risks and challenges. These issues can occur during the development, production, and/or logistical aspects of the project. When making products molds can break, materials can be swapped, and imperfections can be missed during quality control. When shipping goods packages get damaged, packages can be lost, and certain countries will levy large duties even for a small order.
Basically, things can happen that are out of our control. The good news is, we’ve been through this before. We have everything in place to launch our product line and the means to correct anything that might go wrong . Most important, we will continue to be transparent throughout the campaign, and also into production and beyond if Planetware is funded. If you have any specific questions about our campaign, our products, or our brand please ask us directly and we will continue to update the answers to the FAQ.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
