We’ve put hundreds of hours into planning and creating The Raccoon Creek Water Trail Map, now we just need to print it!!

Raccoon Creek Water Trail Association is a non-profit that wants to make our little piece of the world a little healthier, a little more noticed and a little more appreciated. We want fish to live in Raccoon Creek and we want people who live near the creek to go fishing for those fish, paddle on a beautiful stream and we want kids to swim in it and not cut their feet on rusty metal and we want those kids to find salamanders and caddisflies and stoneflies under the rocks and leaves near the bank.

We want to motivate people from far off points of the state to drive down to the Raccoon Creek watershed for the day. We’re trying to make our backyard into something that is beautiful, recreational, biodiverse, and brings money to our neighborhood. We are starting with a map; a map that tells the history and the beauty and the best places to launch canoes and kayaks in the creek, and where to find the coolest old railroad tunnels and other enchanted sites.

We believe that a map is the key to getting our community involved, in getting the health back in the stream and the health back in the community, as well as bringing business back to small out of reach towns. This map is a step that we want to take. We plan to print this map that we have put so much effort into on eco friendly paper that is water resistant and tear resistant and we plan to distribute it throughout the state and beyond.

So we’ve spent the last few years finding put ins and take outs along the creek, talking to land owners and convincing them to let us put in access points on their land and studying the area surrounding the creek (the Watershed) for the Map. An amazing Ohio University Grad student, Karla Sanders, put all of our compiled information together and designed the map. She did such a great job -- you get the idea from the video -- that we simply have to see this project through. Years of work from all our devoted volunteers and months of work from Karla have been put into this map.

The Raccoon Creek Water Trail Map is ready to be sent to the printers. We’ve raised nearly $2400 through donations and by selling literally 1200 raffle tickets, but we need your help with the rest. The printer charges $4500 for 3000 maps. We really want to have these maps available to the public by the spring, by paddling season, so please help us out!!!!

Selling this map will bring in money to do clean up, restoration and recreation projects on the creek and it will bring in tourists who will then tell their friends about the beauty of Southeast Ohio. The more well known an area is the more likely it is to be protected. The map will help create healthy outdoor recreation opportunities for the local community on a daily basis. This map is the beginning of something wonderful!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The trouble that usually arises in volunteer run projects is that jobs get mixed up, organization is a big deal and probably causes the most trouble. We’ve decided to eliminate that problem altogether. One person, our Chair, is in charge of the map printing process. She’s been in touch with the map printers Williams and Heintz Map Corporation and is already on the right track. Map dispersal is another potential problem that we will have to overcome. We have devoted volunteers who are willing to talk to and persuade shop owners into selling the map in their shops, plus our diverse volunteer base have a huge network of acquaintances who will help distribute the Water Trail Map. We’re planning ahead already, Glenn is already talking to the Bob Evans Farm, located on Raccoon Creek, about selling the maps!!
