Go to the store to purchase a loaf of bakery bread and you are likely to walk away with your bread in a paper bag quickly losing moisture and freshness. You eat it that day, because by next day it is only good for pulverizing into panko crumbs. The alternative is to wrap your loaf in plastic, creating landfill waste along with the recyling burden of the paper packaging it came in.
Green City Living is a company building a strong reputation for improving the quality and workability of everyday reusable items. Our EcoBaguette Bread Sleeves and liners are the latest in our efforts to minimize waste with a very feasible alternative. It is the first of it's kind for the bakery bread market.
The system is composed of a lightweight liner and a heavier cover sleeve that will be sold separately. The EcoBaguette Liners are sufficient for bringing bread home and for storage up to 3 days. They are composed of specially food safe & laminated nylon fabric and will be available in three sizes/shapes: standard loaf, French loaf (as used for demonstration), & round loaf. They will retail for $9-11 for a set of three (including 3 of one shape or 1 of each). Kickstarter pledges will be given a choice. The bags can be washed & dried with other laundry.
Our EcoBaguette Bread Sleeve is made of polyurethane laminated cotton. The laminate is free of BPA, Phthalates, lead & PVC. The coating on the inside prevents drying of contents. They will be available in several fun fabrics and will retail for $14/individually. Like the liners, they will be available in standard, French & round loaf options. The bags preserve bread for up to 5-7* days when used with the liners, and can be cleaned in the washing machine and air dried. They are very durable and should last for several years with normal use.
*Freshness further promoted when a terracotta stone is inserted & bag is kept in the refrigerator. The terracotta stone will be included with each EcoBaguette Bread Cover Sleeve.
Note: Patent & Trademarks pending.
Risks and challenges
Our two challenges will be acquiring the cotton laminated on the back and hiring the staff to scale our production.
Fortunately our owner has built a strong partnership with the leading retailer of the laminated fabrics. This will allow her to purchase it at wholesale pricing and get it custom laminated.
We are also blessed to have a shop manager who has a 4 year degree in fashion design and manufacturing. She has trained a great team of sewing staff who produce a consistently high quality product. We will utilize the current team to teach additional staff as needed. We have the space to grow and access to the machinery we need.
