As a small farm owner, I love the concept of CSA – Community Supported Agricuture. This is a model where a farm's customers provide some working capital by paying ahead of time for a share of the farmer's produce. I think this Kickstarter campaign is similar... by providing upfront financial support, you are helping get the project off the ground, and you'll be rewarded with your own share of the finished project.
I've written many new songs over the last year, and I'm excited to record them for my second studio album (along with a couple of older tunes). I've been preparing the songs with a wonderful performance coach, and I'm all set to record in Portland, OR this summer at New North Sound with several excellent musicians including Tim Ellis (guitar), Tim Connell (mandolin), Chris Miskow (resonator guitar, banjo, accordion), Gideon Freudmann (cello), Joe Aloia (bass), Theresa Riccardi (drums) and Sharon Donaldson (violin). All I need is some additional funding to get this project fully off the ground! Here's a breakdown of the production costs:
musicians and producer: $2000
recording studio/engineer/mixing: $2100
cd production: $1000
other fees (including copyright, digital distribution rights, etc.): $600
Kickstarter rewards, fees, etc.: $1150
This is the minimum needed for the project. Additional funds would be used for more producer time, promotion, touring, etc. Also, Kickstarter keeps 5% of the amount collection, and Amazon also keeps a small percentage. So while my goal is $7500, additional funds would be very much appreciated and well-utilized.
I'm asking family and friends, fans and strangers to help out with this project. Check out the various levels and contribute at the level where you feel comfortable. You could get a copy of the album when it's done, or maybe you'll have me come perform at a house concert. Or, I'll write an original song for you, or maybe record a cover song of your choosing. I'll be posting updates here, and backers will get exclusive videos and special updates from me, as well as some exclusive digital artwork (drawings and photos) along the way.
I will be so thankful for any and all of the support you can share with me, whether financial, or in forwarding this page to your friends, or just in sending me good thoughts! (Hugs are also welcomed.) And I'm very excited to share the finished album with you.
Please keep in mind that Kickstarter is all or nothing. If I don't reach my goal, I don't get any of the funds pledged. So it's critical to reach my goal by the end date. This is where the community support comes in...
I'm already so thankful for all of the music and love in my life. From my supportive husband and son, to my musical friends, to my awesome and always inspiring students. Please join my wonderful team, and make a pledge to help my dream come true.
PS - Thank you to Phil Guzzo, for the video production, to my friend Ron Hurst of Steppenwolf, for agreeing to be in the video, and to my students Jamie, Charlotte and Margaret, also for agreeing to be in the video.
June update: Here's a new clip that I recorded the other day
Risks and challenges
The primary challenges I can see are coordinating the recording schedule (since there will be several musicians, as well as the studio involved), and also maximizing our time in the studio. However, I've had a lot of experience with event planning, and with working with other musicians. I feel confident that we can work out the timeline and studio time efficiently and effectively, so hopefully that will not be a challenge (barring any unforeseen issues). And we are already working on arrangements, and other aspects of the music performance, so we plan to be ready to go once we get in the studio!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
