What We're Doing
Gabe is a documentary feature that follows Gabe Weil, a 27 year old born with the most severe form of muscular dystrophy. For his entire life, Gabe had been told he would be lucky to live past the age of 25. But recently, he learned he was misdiagnosed, and may live well into his 50’s. The news puts Gabe, a recent college graduate, on a journey of discovery that he had never thought possible. This film captures his remarkable path to meaning and purpose, while facing daily challenges that most people in the world couldn’t even fathom.
No parent should have to bury their child, but that was the reality that Dick and Josephine Weil faced when their adopted son was diagnosed with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. At the age of nine, Gabe became wheelchair bound. By the time he was a teenager, he required a full time caretaker. Despite his grim diagnosis, Gabe made it his life goal to get a college degree, knowing that such an accomplishment was more than most could expect of him.
In December of 2013, Gabe graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, fulfilling his dream. Nearly simultaneously, doctors informed him that he had been misdiagnosed all along, and as such, that he might live into his 50s. Although this news was overwhelmingly positive, it presented a surprising obstacle. Gabe did not have any long-term goals. He was forced to rethink his life from scratch. This radical shift in consciousness propelled him to set new goals, continue overcoming obstacles, and manifest more dreams.
Gabe is a testament to human perseverance, and a reminder that despite our differences, we are all connected through our shared humanity.
Why We're Doing This
This project started as a request from Gabe to film important moments in his life. It didn't take long to see that we had something much more than a home video. The stereotypes and misconceptions about people with disabilities are misguided yet prevalent, and often make it hard for someone like Gabe to integrate into a community. Our goal with this film is for it to be a resource that reveals misconceptions about individuals with disabilities. By the end of the film, we hope people will not see a young man in a wheelchair, but a human being trying to find his place in the world.
In addition, this film relates to a universal audience by touching on issues of mortality. Although most people avoid acknowledging the ephemeral nature of their time here on earth, Gabe was never afforded that opportunity. His response to his diagnosis was to live a life filled with joy, integrity, and love towards all others. By following his example, we hope this film will serve as a reminder to all that it is not the years in your life that matter, but rather, the life in your years.
Who We Are
This film represents the collaborative effort of dozens of people across the US. Without each person's help and unique contributions, this film would not be possible.
Restless Productions was founded with the understanding that film can be used as a positive force for change. The name stems from the idea that we should never settle, we should always strive to do more, to learn more, and to help others. To affect change, we must abandon complacency. We have to stay restless- the journey towards a better world is an uphill battle that never ends.

Risks and challenges
As with all independent films, timing is hard to predict as unforeseen obstacles often present themselves at inopportune times. We are confident, however, that through this kickstarter campaign we will not only raise the funds necessary to keep us on track without compromising production quality, but also that it will give us the momentum necessary to see us through the finish line. Thanks again for the support, this movie would not be possible without people like you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
