I’m here to talk about BENT-CON, an annual pop-culture convention happening this November in Burbank, CA.
BENT-CON also celebrates and recognizes often-overlooked independent and niche work that deserves a wider audience.
It’s sort of an “A to Z” in creativity, networking, opportunity and fandom -- a place where everyone takes center-stage and showcases whatever they’re up to creatively, expressing and sharing with an ever-growing audience. I personally like to think of BENT-CON as an annual celebration that is a welcoming and safe place for anyone—fan or professional—who believes everyone has a right to see themselves reflected in the things they love.
BENT-CON was founded with community in mind. In 2010 we held the very first BENT-CON in a donated space in Los Angeles’ Silverlake area, as an experiment to see if works that were unabashedly queer-positive could stand together and bring in an audience. And they did!
The success of that one-day show is when BENT-CON was truly born. From nearly 500 attendees then to nearly 3500 attendees at our 2013 convention—BENT-CON has shown steady growth year after year, thanks to the ever-evolving community that has grown to love and embrace it. This November, BENT-CON will be celebrating it’s 5th year, and we want to make it our biggest and best yet.
Since BENT-CON is all about diversity and inclusivity, we decided to reach out through crowd funding to preserve the intention and heart of BENT-CON:
For the community, by the community.
So we need your help!
We’ve set our initial goal at $15,000, which is intended to bring more attention to the annual celebration as a whole and, with your pledges, BENT-CON hopes to cover the total convention’s costs for this year and even some extras that we’ve indicated in the stretch-goals portion below.
You'll notice that most of our rewards are very limited! Some are even one of a kind!
And because BENT-CON is also a federally recognized tax-exempt corporation, your contribution (less the value of your backer reward), is tax deductible. So Everyone Wins!
We need your enthusiasm, interest and curiosity. With your help, we hope to not only meet our starting goal, but also lay a solid foundation for the future of the celebration, so BENT-CON can be fully financed for years to come.
We’re eager for you to experience first hand what’s possible when the community comes together to build and nurture environments that reflect the beautiful diversity of the real world, beyond what we’re often served by mainstream pop-culture.
We want BENT-CON to send a clear message to social culture and mass entertainment:
No matter what your tastes, you’ll find something exciting and new at BENT-CON! Whether it’s action and adventure, stories for young readers, comedy, erotica, or heartfelt drama, BENT-CON has it. BENT-CON is more than just a yearly convention—it’s also a destination, with a great crowd of people to mix, mingle, and celebrate with. Let’s make it a destination we can be even more proud of. Let’s celebrate our differences – safely, happily, and without judgment. Let’s show the world that BENT-CON truly is a celebration for EVERYONE!
All of our wonderful rewards are donated by our partners, guests, exhibitors, or panelists. Our Bent-Con logo, which graces many of our stretch goal rewards, is original artwork by our own President and Founder, Sean Z. Maker! Our partners have done a wonderful job in offering varied and exciting rewards! We hope you can find a level that thrills you to pledge at as much as creating those levels thrilled us!
The cabana massage level will take place during our famous Atlantean Pool Party on Saturday. The convention weekend level is for our 2015 convention! Imagine having your hotel and badges already in place for next year!
When you pledge to the level you wish, simply increase your reward AMOUNT to cover any and all add-ons.If you have questions on HOW to add on to your pledge, please visit the Kickstarter FAQs at and you’ll find a wonderful video on how to do just that!
Because many of you already have your badges or need them only for specific days, we have left most of our rewards as is rather than increase their value to cover badges you may not need or want. Therefore, we are offering our badges HERE, on Kickstarter, as an Add-On.

Because Bent-Con is a non-profit organization, it is unable to back projects as an entity. However, we, the Bent-Con staff, can and do! Here are just some of the projects we’ve supported:

Risks and challenges
The convention will happen without a doubt ... unless a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion occurs, Bent-Con 2014 will take place as scheduled. With four previous years under our belts, we're confident that this year will be our best year yet.
That being said, there are always unforeseen events that could impact the individual rewards. We are proud of our working relationship with our wonderful donors. Any obstacles that arise would surely cause no more than a delay in fulfillment, if that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
