Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress is a brand new, fully cooperative, dungeon crawl adventure board game, set in Feudal Japan, and is part of the Shadows of Brimstone™ game series!
Players take on the role of courageous Heroes, fighting back a tide of evil creatures and demons that have invaded their world! Play as the stalwart Samurai Warrior, using your mastery of the Katana and your bushido code of honor to defeat your foes in combat, the nimble and deadly ninja Assassin, using stealth and speed as weapons, the Traveling Monk, a member of an ancient Yamabushi order devoted to fighting supernatural creatures wherever they may be found, and the powerful and mystic Sorceress, who wields Elemental Magik to crush her enemies.
Set in Feudal Japan, the Heroes must brave the Forbidden Fortress; a feudal castle overrun with all manner of Demons, Ghosts, and Monsters inspired by Japanese myth and legend. The massive Oni, red beast-like ogres wielding giant clubs, stalk the halls, while deadly Tengu sword masters descend from the skies with their raven wings to attack the Heroes. Legions of Samurai Dishonored Dead rise from the grave, and writhing Acidic Tentacles burst from the floor to spit acid and feed on the Heroes with their razor sharp teeth.
But at the heart of the fortress lie the most terrifying and epic foes of all; the Harionago, a ghostly, demonic woman, held aloft by the twisting strands of her animated hair, which is also used to entangle and slash at the Heroes with its vicious barbs, and the towering Living Statue, possessed by Darkness to break away from its posts, wreaking havoc and smashing the castle it was once built to protect!

Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress can be played on its own as a stand-alone game, or it can be used in combination with any and all of the other Shadows of Brimstone products already available! It is fully compatible, in every way! For new players, Forbidden Fortress will make a great introduction to the world of Shadows of Brimstone, and for veteran players, it adds a ton of new content, including two brand new Worlds to explore - the Japanese castles and temples of the Forbidden Fortress and a living world inside a massive creature in the Belly of the Beast. It also includes a brand new set of Heroes and Enemies to add to your games. With the option of starting your Heroes in Feudal Japan or the Old West, or having a mixed party of Heroes, drawn from both worlds, the possibilities are endless!
The Belly of the Beast OtherWorld
Forbidden Fortress also adds a brand new OtherWorld on the back side of the Map Tiles… The Belly of the Beast! Backers from the original Brimstone Kickstarter may recognize this as an OtherWorld Stretch Goal that was not unlocked during the original campaign. When we started formalizing what would be in Forbidden Fortress, the idea of adding the Belly of the Beast as the OtherWorld on the back side of the tiles was a perfect fit! What could be more in keeping with the Japanese theme than allowing the Heroes to find their way through a portal that leads inside of an unspeakably massive creature; battling all sorts of living organs and parasites, and fighting off the Flesh Mites, Acid Blobs, and Parasitic Tentacles that inhabit this ‘living’ world.

The Temple of Shadows Deluxe Expansion
The Temple of Shadows was once the home of an ancient and powerful order of Yamabushi monks, dedicated to battling supernatural creatures throughout the land. It was foretold that one day the Great Dragon King, Sho-Riu would return to destroy the Earth, and only they could stop him. When the meteor came from the heavens and devastated the mountain, the Dragon King came with it. For generations the monks had been training for this moment, and as Sho-Riu descended on the temple, they gathered their strength and prepared to fulfill their destiny.
But their victory was not to be. Reigning down death and destruction, the Dragon King broke through the monk’s defenses and utterly destroyed the order, devouring their souls and bringing Darkness and shadow into the sacred temple. Those few that survived were scattered and leaderless, but they would not sit idle. Traveling the roads and countryside, the last of the monks dedicated their lives to finding new Heroes that could one day fulfill the prophecy and reclaim… the Temple of Shadows!
Building on the themes from the Forbidden Fortress Core Set, the Temple of Shadows Deluxe Expansion adds a ton of new content for the Feudal Japan setting and the Belly of the Beast OtherWorld. This boxed set includes:
4 New Hero Classes
Enforcer – An outlaw and a gangster, the Enforcer is an anti-Hero renegade who favors brute strength and intimidation over elegant fighting weapons and technique. His tattooed body is hardened and scarred from a lifetime of brutal brawling.
Geisha – Beautiful but deadly, the Geisha is a cunning and stealthful fighter. She employs deception and trickery to evade and confuse enemies, while slashing with her hidden blade from behind. Her comforting presence can heal the Heroes, both body and soul, to keep them in the fight.
Soldier – The Soldier is a veteran of warfare who has seen many battles and is an expert marksman with his Rifle. Though he does not have the style or family heritage of the Samurai, he is a hardened foot soldier that has access to a variety of different weapons and training.
Kitsune – A guardian spirit, the Kitsune has come forward to defend this world against the demons and creatures that would threaten to destroy it. Taking on a human-fox form, the Kitsune uses supernatural tricks and auras to protect the Heroes, while darting between enemies to deliver killing blows with her deadly blades.
4 New Enemy Types
Chochinobake – These demon-possessed, animated lanterns swarm the Heroes, relentlessly biting and burning them with terrifying speed.
Takobake Warriors – Once a noble clan, the Takobake have embraced the power of the Dark Stone. Using its energy to grow in strength, they have become mutated into tentacled monstrosities, twisted and evil.
Skin Crawlers – These large, parasitic creatures burrow through the flesh and muscle walls in the Belly of the Beast, rising up from the pools of sticky mucus to assault any Heroes foolish enough to enter into their feeding grounds.
The Fallen Shogun – This dreadful leader of the Takobake clan was one of the first to discover the magical properties of the Dark Stone. Weaving it into his armor, and forging it into weapons, he has gone mad with power, mutating into a giant among men! Declaring himself Shogun, he now sweeps across the land with his legions of mutated soldiers, conquering any who would stand in his way.

There are two Kickstarter Exclusive Hero Classes created for this campaign.
As part of the Sumo Pledge Level, a backer will get the KS Exclusive Sumo Hero Class.
Sumo – A massive and imposing figure, the Sumo has trained all his life for unarmed battle in the wrestling ring. But when Demons and Monsters sweep across the land, he answers the call, stepping out of the ring and onto the battlefield.
Mounted on a 40mm base, the Sumo is the first ever large size Hero. He uses his weight and strength to mercilessly crush his foes, pushing enemies around the board and body slamming them with unbridled fury.
As part of the Shogun Pledge Level, a backer will also get the KS Exclusive Samurai Daimyo Hero Class, which also includes 3 Armored Ashigaru Foot Soldiers for him to command!
Samurai Daimyo – A clan leader and military general, the Samurai Daimyo uses strategy and tactics to outwit and outmaneuver his opponents. As a powerful commander and trained Samurai warrior, he leads his armies into combat, for honor and glory!
The Samurai Daimyo starts each adventure with up to 3 Armored Ashigaru Foot Soldier Allies to command. In addition to being a skilled fighter, the Daimyo is also a natural leader, and many of his skills and abilities focus on giving bonuses to the rest of the Heroes and his Foot Soldiers
There are 2 types of Stretch Goals that can be unlocked during the course of this Kickstarter campaign: Sumo Level Stretch Goals (marked in Light Tan) and Shogun Level Stretch Goals (marked in Purple).
Sumo Level Pledges will receive only the Light Tan Sumo Level Stretch Goals, while Shogun Level Pledges will receive both the Light Tan Sumo Level Stretch Goals as well as all of the Purple Shogun Level Stretch Goals.

You don’t have to specify what you want yet, that will happen in the Pledge Manager after the Forbidden Fortress KS Campaign has finished.
How Does the Game Play?
Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress is a fully-cooperative, Dungeon Crawl adventure game! That means that all of the players form a Hero team (or you can play solo) and are working together against the game itself, entering the torch-lit castle gates and exploring dark courtyards and mysterious chambers within a fortress that has been overrun with creatures and demons! The team can take on different missions from the Adventure Book, each with unique set up and victory conditions. You may be searching for a sacred artifact, stolen from the nearby temple by demons and carried off to the dark fortress, or you might be tasked with sealing off portals that unspeakable creatures are pouring out of!
1-4 Players (or up to 6 Players if combined with the Temple of Shadows Expansion) create their Heroes by selecting a Hero Class to play, such as the Samurai Warrior or Sorceress. That Hero Class defines your basic character stats - how much Health and Sanity you have, how good you are at hitting enemies with your Katana, how good you are at solving puzzles or dodging fiendish traps, etc. It also defines your basic starting Gear - do you start with a sword, a staff, shuriken? Also, any abilities that all characters of your Hero Class share (a Samurai’s "Code of Honor" for example). Each Hero also starts with a Random Personal Item that gives them a bit more ‘character’, and they get to choose one of three Starting Upgrades unique to their Hero Class. This gives players a chance to start guiding their Hero’s development right from the outset!
Once your team is ready to go, the players roll (or decide) what Mission they have taken on and the game begins! Each Hero is represented by a figure on the game board and all of the figures are placed on the Fortress Entrance Map Tile to start the game. All of the Card Decks are shuffled, each Hero gets 1 Grit Token, and the Depth Track is setup with the Hero Party’s marker on the entrance and the Darkness marker deep in the fortress (at the opposite end of the track).
At the start of each turn, the Hero with the Lantern rolls 2 dice to Hold Back the Darkness! This roll needs to be equal to or greater than the number listed on the current stage of the Depth Track. If the roll is passed, the Heroes carry on without delay. If the roll is failed, the Darkness moves one step up the track toward escaping the fortress! But beware, if the Darkness marker ever reaches the entrance space on the Depth Track, it has escaped, and the mission is failed. As an added element of danger, if the Hold Back the Darkness roll is ever doubles (1-1, 3-3, etc), this instead triggers a random event from the Depth Event Chart equal to that number!
Heroes now take their turn in order of Initiative, with the highest going first. During a Hero’s Activation, they roll a die and may move up to the amount rolled. If a 1 is rolled, the Hero also recovers an extra Grit Token. Grit Tokens are used for a number of things in game. A Grit Token may be discarded to Re-roll any number of your dice just rolled (though no die may be Re-rolled more than once), or a Grit Token may be discarded to move an extra die roll worth of spaces during your Movement. A Grit Token may also be used to activate certain powerful character abilities.
After moving, the Hero may attack if there are any enemies on the board, or if they have ended their move in a space adjacent to a doorway (an open exit from the map tile you are on), you may look down the hall and draw a random Map Card to place the next Map Tile, connecting it to the doorway you are looking through. Each time a new Map Tile is placed, you must also move the Hero Party’s marker one step forward on the Depth Track, as the Hero Team delves deeper into the fortress. This is important because as the Heroes go deeper underground, it becomes harder and harder to Hold Back the Darkness (the number required to roll gets higher, the deeper the Hero Party has gone).
Newly placed Map Tiles are always either a Room or a Passage. Passage Tiles have open doorways on all ends and can often split the path in front of the Heroes. They do not, however, contain Encounters for the Heroes to deal with. Room Tiles, on the other hand, always come into play with an Exploration Token on them. As long as there is an unrevealed Exploration Token on a Map Tile, Heroes may not look through Doorways on that Map Tile (you can’t explore further than that room with the unrevealed token). At the end of a full Hero Turn (after all Heroes have been Activated), if there are one or more Heroes in a Room with an Exploration Token, that token is revealed!
While exploring, Heroes can find large, swirling portals that the Enemies are coming through to attack, and they can step through those gateways into a crazy alien World, continuing their adventures on the other side! All of the Map Tiles are double-sided, with the Fortress on one side and an alien OtherWorld on the back side. In Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress, the alien World included is the Belly of the Beast! Stepping through the portal, the Heroes find themselves inside an unfathomably large creature, exploring the living passages and inner chambers of its massive body, dripping with goo and overrun with parasites and living defenses.
Once the Heroes have reached their objective for the mission being played, they will often have one final Epic battle with an Enemy boss to complete the Adventure!
Between Adventures, the Heroes can travel back to a nearby Japanese Village to re-stock and re-supply, having a mini-Adventure in Town before setting out on the next Mission.
Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress has a built in campaign system allowing the players to keep their Heroes from game to game, finding cool new Gear and Artifacts that they can use in their continuing Adventures, while gaining experience and going up in level to unlock new skills chosen from their Class-Specific Skill Tree.
The Miniatures included in Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress and the Temple of Shadows Expansion are multi-part HIPS hard plastic. They come on frames and do require some assembly. We have taken great care to make the assembly in as few pieces per model as possible, while still getting a high level of detail and fantastic, dynamic poses. This also brings an aspect of Hobby to the game as many players find it fun to customize and paint their figures.

Our intent is to ship all Pledge Rewards and Stretch Goals for this KS project as a single shipping Wave.
However, all extra Add-On items (added individually beyond your Pledge Level/Stretch Goals) will be shipped separately from the main Pledge Rewards/Stretch Goals, and will likely ship AFTER the main Pledge Rewards/Stretch Goals.
Extra Add-on items are US, EU, UK, Canada, and Australia Friendly. They will be packed and delivered to our distribution centers in the EU, UK, Canada, and Australia (at our expense) and then shipped to individual Backer addresses from within the EU, UK, Canada, and Australia for Backers in those regions.
Shipping and handling charges are not included in the pledge levels. We will be charging shipping after the Kickstarter ends, based on the actual costs to ship. We will collect this via our pledge manager after the campaign ends. We will ship your rewards (at our cost) to our distribution centers in the US (in Washington State), Australia, UK, Canada, and the EU. Backers will then be responsible for shipping charges from the most appropriate distribution center to your address.

What is Shadows of Brimstone?
Shadows of Brimstone™ is a fully cooperative, dungeon crawl, adventure game, set in the Old West and mashed up with unspeakable horror. First appearing as a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013, Shadows of Brimstone™ was released to retail in late 2014 and has been going strong ever since.
The game supports 1-6 players, has a standard game time of 2-3 hours, and includes a campaign system for keeping your Hero characters from game to game, finding new items on your adventures and gaining new skills and abilities as you go up in level. You can also visit an Old West Frontier Town between adventures to re-stock and re-supply before setting out on your next mission, and during the game, you can find the swirling portals that the terrifying enemies are coming from, and you can step through those gateways to continue your adventures on the other side, in another dimension or alien world. The map tiles are all double-sided, with the Old West Mines on one side and an alien environment on the other side.
One of the main features of Shadows of Brimstone™ is that all of the players work together against the game itself, and that everything is card-based and dynamically generated as you play (the encounters, enemies, board layout, etc.), meaning that the game never plays the same way twice.

Risks and challenges
As an established game company, Flying Frog Productions has been making high quality, thematic, fun games for nearly ten years! We launched our first Kickstarter Campaign in October of 2013 for the original Shadows of Brimstone, and have been through the process, working out the pipeline and navigating the hurdles. That project was enormous, with many moving parts, and logistical challenges. We have learned many lessons from that experience that will go into making this new Kickstarter project even better! The success of the first Kickstarter campaign allowed us to hire additional staff in our studio and find new manufacturing contacts who can produce higher quality miniatures and components.
Miniatures – We have been producing HIPS hard plastic, multi-part figures for over 3 years now, working with several factories to refine the pipeline and process. The results are figures that keep getting better and better detail and quality, both in the tooling of the molds and the sculpting of the figures. The miniatures in Forbidden Fortress are some of our absolute best to date, and we are very excited for backers to see the level of detail on these figures.
Delivery Timeline – "Is March 2018 a realistic Delivery timeframe for this project?"
Yes. By going through the (admittedly long) process of the first Shadows of Brimstone KS, we developed the pipeline and the tools needed to complete a project like this. Most of the rules and systems for the game are already in place, and this project is all about adding a lot of fun new content that builds on the established Game Engine.
Several factors contribute to giving this project a faster delivery time than the original Shadows of Brimstone KS:
- The Pledge Levels are streamlined to give only 2 variations on Rewards to be delivered, Sumo Level and Shogun Level boxes.
- Pledge Rewards will be packed and shipped from China directly to our distribution facilities around the world in the US, Australia, Canada, UK, and EU.
- Extra Add-ons added beyond the Pledge Rewards and Stretch Goals will be packed separately on a per backer basis. Extra Add-Ons will be shipped separately using EU, US, Canada, UK, and Australia Friendly shipping to allow backers to add extra items without slowing down the main project delivery timeline.
- The project has been scoped to better fit the production window and estimated delivery of March 2018.
