The game is inspired by a mix of classic metroidvania platformer games and JRPGs as the main visual foundation. We put a lot of effort in creating the world and environments that you'll be exploring and we are really satisfied with the unique art style, hope you like it as much as we do :)
However, pretty pictures don't make a great gameplay experience by themselves so we threw in a couple of unique mechanics to enhance the classic genre to give you more choices, to give more depth to the storyline and to make sure you'll keep coming back to Nephil because of its replayability potential.
Here are just a couple of key points you can expect from the game:
- Classic platformer mechanics – run, jump, double-jump, roll, etc.
- Four essences of fire, water, earth and wind, which enhance your abilities and make you a demi-god.
- Sacrifice your abilities to restore order to the world and discover what really happend,
- Master each environments in your own play style,
- Start strong with loads of abilities , but give them up along the way and become a master of those you have chosen to keep.
Thanks to our wonderful backers we have reached our initial goal. You guys are all awesome. If you want even more content in Nephil's Fall who are we do deny it. Here come the stretch goals!
Your world was once lush and verdant, the rivers were clear, the forests were full of life and its inhabitants in harmony with nature. But entropy always finds a way, dark forces shifted this natural balance. They put the ancient guardian Nephil in a coma and stole the four essences that Nephil was protecting.
These essences gave life to the world and their absence meant that dark corruption spread to all corners of the world, bringing it to the verge of complete destruction.
Your story begins as Nephil wakes up and sees the corruption around him. He realizes that he has failed in his task and to redeem himself he must set out to find the source of the corruption. Only with your help he can find all the stolen essences and return them to nature. Your guidance will be the difference between utter failure and destruction of all living things or Nephil's redemption as guardian.
Nephil is based on the concept of the nephilim - the fallen angels who were sworn to protect Earth, a superhuman race of giants with massive power. Our Nephil is the ancient guardian of his world with a sworn duty to protect it under any circumstances.
Because Nephil's responsibility to the world is so great, he has at his disposal an array of great powers as well. Nephil is directly linked with the world that he is protecting and the essences that permeate the world are infused in him. As the world faces greater and greater peril, so does Nephil's ability to draw upon the essences to conquer all challenges increase.
The four life essences are essential to the natural balance. They are the components of everything there is in Nephil’s world, from pebbles in the dessert to butterflies and waterfalls. The absence of those elements leads to the gradual but certain downfall and destruction of the entire world.
Nephil gains additional abilities and spells through the power of the four essences. Each of the essences has been locked into four segments of his armor, one for each power. The life essences of fire, earth, air and water give Nephil control over flame, ground, wind and water. Each essences gives Nephil specific abilities, ranging from a ground smashing slam to face melting fireballs.
Nephil's Fall, at its heart, is a metroidvania platformer. Exploration through action-adventure based play is the basic principle of the game. There will be different paths to take, secrets to uncover, abilities to master and timed jumps to execute. These are the core mechanics that we believe define a great genre. We want to stay true to the gameplay experiences of Nephils’ predecessors and improve on them with a rich story and new mechanics.
But for us to really make Nephil's Fall stand out and bring some of our own ideas to the table we will make things a little more complex. As a fallen guardian you will start out with all the powers a demigod has. We want you to get a sense of all what Nephil is capable of before you decide which your favorite play style is.
There are two sacrifice mechanics in the game:
A) To pass certain portals into different environments and levels, the player needs to choose which armor piece and thus its essence power he’ll leave behind temporarily. This leaves the player with a tactical choice: decide which of your abilities you can do without for the time being.
B) In order to restore balance to the environment Nephil needs to permanently sacrifice one of his essences by giving it back to nature. This means Nephil is getting weaker throughout the game which means that player will have to become more skilful to compensate for their lack of abilities.
The strength loss mechanic is not only the only “backwards” thing in Nephil when compared to similar games. In terms of the story, we aren’t really concerned with what will happen, we are more interested in what happened. We therefore decided that the player will not travel from left to right as is fairly standard in most platformer games, but in fact will be going from right to left. This is both an homage to platformers which inspired Nephil and our own little way of constantly reminding the player that the most important part of the story already happened, we just want to find out what it is.
Simply, we are a jolly bunch of creative workaholics who love to make games. We come from all walks of life and we bring a lot of different complementary skills and competences to the table..
Our multi-disciplinary approach has allowed us to really tumble and hash out every single idea and concept. There is no graphical asset, line of code or story element that only one person produced or worked on – which has occasionally lead to some very creative solutions. This approach has helped us really raise our standard of quality and constantly reminds us that every member of our team is both professionally and emotionally involved with the project. Simply put, Nephil’s Fall is the game that we want to make.
From left to right:
Andrej Soldo is our 3d artist, he handles the meshes, sculpts, textures and animations. Also doubles as a programmer in a pinch, or a chef when the team is hungry. He is currently exploring the northern reaches in The Banner Saga.
Ana Antoncic iis the financial head of our little studio and seems to be in love with Excel tables. She has a very contagious laugh, which more often than not can be heard throughout the office. She is currently piling up blobs in World of Goo.
Zlatka Suboticanec is our youngest and most talented team member. She does killer illustrations and is in charge of the characters. She is currently pirating in Black Flag.
Karla Andric is our “pixel master”. Her attention to detail is borderline scary, so nothing passes through our door before she approves it with her eagle eyes. She is currently walking the Year Walk.
From left to right:
Mihael Grilec is our coding ninja wizard with +10 INT staff. There is no task too hard to throw at him (and we throw a LOT of tasks on him). He will analyse, decode, deconstruct, and put it all back together, just better than you thought possible. He is currently re-rolling in Rogue Legacy.
Marko Vilipić "Vili" is our dedicated 2d guy and a veritable explosion of creativity. He’s always proposing new ideas on how to improve and enhance the work we do. He plays whatever he gets his hands on, mostly everything.
From left to right:
Lovro Nola is our tireless producer, digging through both the story and the gameplay elements and always pushing us to make better content for our players. He is currently mesing around with the drivers for our Oculus Rift set.
Andrej Kovacevic is the game designer behind Nephil's Fall. He spends most of his time trying to figure out how his universe works. He is also in charge of the super-duper exciting stuff, like keeping deadlines and tuning input/output efficiency. He is a big fan of MOBAs and plays them almost daily.currently swearing at his team-mates in Dota 2 (but he also plays LoL).
Not caught by camera:
Gregory Hlavac, the assistant programmer. His hands are still bloody from working on The Red Solstice but the experience he gained aids us well and aids us often. When he's not pretending to be a space marine causing havoc on Mars he enjoys other co-op tactical survival titles.
We would love to bring Nephil’s Fall to every single platform (including Atari), but our initial goal is the PC, Mac and Linux version.
Consoles, both regular and handheld, are the next logical step for Nephil's Fall but this is something that, at the moment, we can only hope for.
Enough text, here’s some pictures for you! :)
