DJM by De Hoedenmaker!
This year De Hoedenmaker (The Hatter) celebrates its 25th anniversary by introducing the very first fashion collection for men that completely fits our range of hats and caps. A collection that has been inspired by the 17th century whaler hats that were dug up by archaeologists on the Island of AmsterdamØya (near Spitsbergen, Norway) in 1980.
We would like to establish our clothing collection with your help! In return you will experience at first hand the design- and production process, leading all the way up to our first fashionshow in January 2018 at the Conservatorium Hotel, Amsterdam.
What are we going to do?
The hat, which has been our specialty for the past 25 years, is not the final touch in this collection but the actual starting point. KnitwearLAB, Studio RYN and shoe designer René van den Berg are our partners. Together with them, but also with you, we are going to design and produce a men's fashion collection under the brand name DJM (Dirk-Jan & Marcel).
With DJM we bring a basis to every man's wardrobe. The collection will consist of 15 basic pieces of clothing, ranging from coats to shirts and from sweaters to trousers. They will be manufactured in 2 fabrics and 2 colours, which makes a total of 60 unique pieces. The collection will be season independent. All pieces can be easily combined, creating a timeless and ready-to-wear look.
Where does this great idea come from?
Over the years we served numerous customers in providing them with our beautiful handmade hats and caps. During that time we were frequently asked if we could provide a complete look matching their new hat or cap. With this collection we want to complete our range of hats and caps with matching fashion.
Our collection will be inspired by the cultural history of Amsterdam, whereby the time period of 1600 to 1800 A.D. has been of particular influence. We want to translate the beautiful fabrics of that period to modern day clothing. For our first collection 17th century whaler hats also inspired us. In 1980 archaeologists were investigating the graves of 185 Dutch men who had died on or near the Island of Spitsbergen. These men were whalers and workers at the tryworks. When opening the graves, the skeletons were still wearing their hats.
These hats were personal; by looking at the striped pattern people were able to recognize each other. Although the hats matched in shape and material, the pattern gave them a unique and individual design.
Inspired by these historical elements we want to combine our craftmanship and experience in hat design and fashion with the talents of our partners into our first ever DJM-collection to meet our customer's needs in providing a complete look. A timeless look with a hint of individualism captured in an easy to wear wardrobe for the every day modern man.
How can I join?
We want you to be part of the unique experience in creating a fashion collection! Your input will make our collection even more unique. Determine with us which pieces of clothing will become the basis of the collection and which fabrics and designs should definitely be included. Or be the first to view pieces of the collection during an exclusive sneak preview!
In order to make our anniversary even bigger we want to celebrate this design process with our investors. These are some special moments that you can join in:
Session 1: Experience the first brainstorm session with the artistic team of De Hoedenmaker
At the end of September we want to brainstorm about the collection together with you. A unique moment, because we will tell you how we will translate our inspiration into a collection and you get to think about and decide with us what the collection will look like. Just imagine that you can be present during this process!
Session 2: View the first mock-ups of the DJM collection
During the middle of October we will present to you the first mock-ups and, during a lovely lunch, we will tell you our success story; 'From Klarendal to Keizersgracht'. We would, for example, like to tell you about our top pieces that we designed for Viktor&Rolf, Tess van Zalinge and Danial Aitouganov among others.
Session 3: The very first sneak preview of the DJM collection
During the middle of November you can be the first person to see the very first pieces of clothing of the DJM collection in real life. Meet the people of KnitwearLAB, Studio RYN and shoe designer René van den Berg, and together we will toast our 25th anniversary in advance, as well as our first successful collection that will be presented at the Conservatorium Hotel, Amsterdam.
