About

Wolf is an intelligent pair of cycling lights that keeps you and your team safe when riding, even in cramped conditions. Envisioned by engineer Ewen Smith and product designer Daniel Hood, Wolf is the first product by startup cycling technology firm, Augur. Wolf is a seamless blend of efficient lighting and an intelligent, onboard controller. Wolf keeps you and your team seen and safe - and ahead of the pack.

Front Lamp: See Further, Be Safer.

Collective Safety - The Next Thing You'll Never Cycle Without

Collective Safety underpins the need for Wolf. As a cyclist, I've seen too many avoidable crashes, bumps and scrapes caused by the dangers (and thrills) of riding in a peloton. A clear view ahead becomes a dazzling brightness as another cyclist's light cuts across your vision. Cycling with your teammates, this can be quite dangerous. This is why we have invented Wolf and Collective Safety.

Collective Safety is an intelligent communications system built into every Wolf light. Wolf is constantly searching for members of its pack. When it finds another Wolf light, it automatically activates the safest lighting mode, calculating distance and speed. In a peloton, it means that cyclists on the outside have the brightest lights, while those in the middle are dimmed, ensuring that everyone can see - and be seen - safely. Collective Safely keeps you and your team out of harm's way.

Anatomy of a Wolf

Wolf by Augur is made by cyclists. We have carefully considered how our design and materials can meet your needs and improve your ride. Industry leading CREE LEDs meet machined aluminium. Onboard electronics are designed to handle robustly the challenges faced by the toughest road warriors. To get you salivating, take a look at what Wolf is packing:

  • Machined, 6061 anodised aluminium
  • Long life rechargeable lithium polymer batteries
  • IP56 rating to prevent water and dust entering the lights
  • Compact, light, cordless design
  • Secure silicone attachment straps

Four Modes: Every Situation Covered

No two rides are ever the same. With four intelligent lighting modes, Wolf has something for everyone - at all times. Stay on a mode for at least 20 seconds, and the next time you wake up your Wolf lights, they'll remember that mode and be ready to go.

Collective Safety at work: Outermost lights are bright, while inner rear lights are dim. All the safety, none of the blinding.

  • High Intensity Strobe lets everyone know you're coming. Signal to other road users that you and the team are on the way. Wolf's high intensity strobe focuses attention where and when you need it.
  • Full Power Beam cuts through the darkness. Pump 165 lumens in a 20 degree wide beam straight ahead. See further so you can go faster. Improve your situational awareness with a market leading brightness to runtime ratio in this well known and loved power mode.
  • Low Intensity Blink a healthy mix of visibility and battery conservation. A slower strobe, the low intensity blink mode keeps you visible for longer and is suited to lower-risk riding.
  • Low Intensity Beam is perfect for twilight riding, when you don't need a full beam but still need help to see where you're going. Simply set the beam and cycle. It's that easy.

And because there is nothing worse that running out of battery while on the bike, there's a special fifth mode to get you home super safe:

  • Power Reserve keeps your light going till you're home safely. Power Reserve mode comes on automatically if the battery is low, giving you an extra long runtime to get home safely.

Sustainable - End to End

We started Augur because we want to make sustainable, great products. Wolf is designed from the very beginning to deliver on our dream of great technology that doesn't hurt the earth. This is why we have chosen highly recyclable components and have achieved an amazing energy efficiency. Our stretch goals will also enable us to improve our environmental credentials - but we can only get there with your help.

We also don't like the idea of retiring your old Wolf just because a new model has come out. To ensure your Wolf can grow old with you we've made it USB updatable. When a new Wolf gets released you'll be able to plug your existing lights in and get all of the latest features. Its our way of giving back a little.

WOLF, AUGUR AND OUR MISSION

I founded Augur in August 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. I graduated from a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) in 2012. After working for several years as a project engineer in one of Australia’s largest engineering companies, I wanted to start a company that made sustainable, technologically advanced products for specialist markets. As an avid cyclist, Wolf was naturally my first product idea.

By backing Wolf on Kickstarter, you are joining a process with considerable momentum. Advanced prototypes have already been completed, the design is at a refinement stage and I am already looking at our shipping and packaging arrangements. Wolf is very far along the development process. Your commitment to Wolf enables payment for tooling and manufacturing, the final step before Wolf is a reality.

We want you to become a part of our community. Augur's website is home to the Peloton Pack, an online discussion space where we can work together to develop new product ideas, discuss Wolf and all enjoy our passion for cycling together. We do hope you'll enjoy your time with Wolf and if it keeps you and your team safer, we have all done our jobs - you included.

As seen on:

Risks and challenges

We've done as much of the work for Wolf as we can before we look at production and shipping. Our prototypes are at very advanced stages and this means there is less risk involved than if we were starting with our idea. Most of the risks at this stage are related to delays in component deliveries, but we thought we should talk you through what we've done to minimise these risks:

- Scaling Production

Our prototypes have been produced in small batches of 10 units. Scaling to meet the demand of a Kickstarter with an open ended number of orders could represent a challenge in a short time frame. We have been building relationships with a number of suppliers to be able to flexibly adjust production capacity when the need arises. This means that we can bring on additional production capacity in a large production run and still be on track for our delivery estimates.

- Component Production and Availability

While we can adjust for scaling through bringing on additional suppliers, changes in component production rates and availability can impact our shipping estimates. We have a strong relationship with our component suppliers and are confident they will inform us of any large or rush orders they might receive that could delay the delivery of components necessary for Wolf.

- Minor design and functionality changes.

We're including this as a risk but we see it as an opportunity. Based on feedback from the Kickstarter process we could make minor changes to the design and functionality of Wolf, such as increasing the battery life, decreasing run times, opting for slightly different materials. We will keep you informed about any such changes and we actively encourage your feedback as we move through this Kickstarter campaign.
