About

Hello, world! (Now I sound like a default WordPress post.)

So, about this project:

I saw that really cool Kickstarter for the Atomic Purple Joy-Con shells + Switch shell project that Adrian Comeau started and thought, "Why not me? Why not more colors?"

So, using that logic, I reached out to the same company, ShenZhen MaiKaisi Trade Co. LTD, who is doing the Atomic Purple run for him and approached them about the rest of the 'Funtastic Series' colors from the N64 days, or, as I like to call it, my 90's kid youth.

They promptly got back to me with the picture that is the image for this campaign, which looks like the other colors are a definite possibility. The only hangup is that the order has to 500 pieces (minimum), and any single color has to have at least 200 orders, as well.

That being said, I haven't decided on a color as of now, because I first need two things to happen:

  • 1. Get the project funded.
  • 2. See what the majority of color options are. For a run of 500, it could go 250/250, 200/300, etc. You get the idea.

If the project gets funded (and I hope it does!), one of the first updates would be what color you would prefer. From there, I'm hoping to whittle down to colors that backers are pleased with.

I will then report those numbers to the company and they will start production!

You also might be wondering why the previous Joy-Con Kickstarter goal, and why mine is so much more expensive.

What colors are we looking at?

The original N64 Funtastic Series Colors:

  • Jungle Green
  • Ice Blue
  • Grape Purple
  • Fire Orange
  • Smoke Black
  • Watermelon Red (which was more pink)

Cost Breakdown:

The company has told me that the units are $25 USD/piece to manufacture. With a minimum order of 500, that's already $12,500.

They also told me there's a PayPal fee of $550, which I'm not convinced of, but they maintain this is true. I'm not sure if this is the cut PayPal takes (2.6% + 30 cents comes under that) or if there's some calculation I'm missing due to currency exchange, but want to factor this into the cost.

I plan on using USPS Priority Shipping to get to shells out to everyone, which averages about $7 per person when using the Click 'n Ship option online. With 500 orders, that's actually $3500.

Bubble envelopes (two bulk packs of 500) will cost $70.

Kickstarter takes 5%, which based off of my approximate math, will cost around $850. I've budgeted slightly above that in case my math isn't totally accurate (which is entirely possible).

Finally, credit card processing fees can range between 3%-5% (says Kickstarter), so I used a 4% average to arrive at $700 lost on those fees.

I've also budgeted slightly above that to make sure there's breathing room in case my math isn't totally accurate.

Based off of the total math, to cover all costs equally (meaning no profit, just breaking even), it's $37 per person, hence the backer cost for the actual product.

So, why should you back this project?

If you're like me and love to mod or tinker with your electronics, I think the 'Funtastic' colors on the Switch look great. I actually still have my Ice Blue N64 and one of each of the 'Funtastic Series' color controllers.

If you missed out on the Atomic Purple Kickstarter and want to relive the glorious console colors of the 90's on the coolest, most versatile console Nintendo has put out in a while, this campaign is for you.

Are you lying about prices, minimum orders, etc.? Rumors say you are.

Of course not! Please use these screenshots from email correspondence with the company as verification. These are the same emails I sent to Kickstarter to get my campaign approved.

Risks and challenges

Obviously, the first challenge is simply working overseas with a company.

Fortunately, ShenZhen MaiKaisi Trade Co. LTD has been making Nintendo modifications/shells and such for 6+ years. Plus, if they're doing the Atomic Purple manufacture, this isn't that far off!

To me, the biggest obstacle might be how quickly the project can be completed. Once payment has been made to ShenZhen, they will begin their manufacture, but we are honestly at their mercy on how long their production process will take.

From the moment the pieces arrive to me, though, understand I will as quickly and efficiently sort by color, package, and mail. I'm no stranger to churning things out on a deadline.

A few years ago, I had another crowdfunding campaign on a different website to purchase a laser engraver and have backer rewards delivered before Christmas.

Thanks to weather delays, my equipment got to me late, but I still had everything in the mail on time.

There was an additional hurdle there, since I had to wait on the machine to actually engrave everything, but here, the manufacturing is all done on its own, so once the product is in hand, it'll get mailed promptly.
