Printoo is a platform of paper-thin circuit boards and modules. It gives makers an open-source, lightweight, flexible, and modular Arduino-compatible platform to create just about anything you want! What makes Printoo amazingly unique is that it comes with a range of printed electronics modules previously unavailable to the public. These are electronics building "blocks" of the future, only not so rigid.
The Flexibility To Bring 3D Printed Objects to Life : Printoo is the first development board that is flexible and light enough to bring any of your 3D printed objects to life - no matter what shape it is! Add internet and Bluetooth connectivity, input, output, motorization, light and motion sensing, and power... Even SOLAR, to almost any configuration or weird shape you print!
Powerful cores, modular components, free code, free apps: Plug the modules together, tinker with the Arduino™ sketches we are making available, and use the apps to connect and control Printoo - bringing your ideas to life!
The Internet of Printoo: We built the apps you need to connect Printoo to the Internet. You'll be able to remotely control your Printoo creations or use them to trigger or perform action on the Web - from your smartphone, tablet or laptop, from anywhere in the world! IFTTT never looked so easy or weighed so little...
As Seen On:
The Coolness of Paper-Thin Boards and Modules:
Printoo comes with Printed Electronics technologies unavailable to the public - until now!
All the board designs will be made open source once finalized after the campaign finishes. We want to make sure you can use them as easily as any other modular building kit. Some of the modules above may still suffer some changes as we try make small improvements and try to reduce their size.
We've been hard at work making sure the Printoo modules have the right form-factor, are robust and are super easy-to-use. To accomplish that, we've been experimenting with the following connectors:
With Printoo, you can create and quickly prototype with technology from the following companies:
Blue Spark Technologies - www.bluesparktechnologies.com
- Battery Chemistry: Carbon-Zinc
- Voltage: 1.5 V
- Input Capacity: 20 mAh
- Height: 55 mm
- Length: 47 mm

- Design optimized for 5V applications, although it works well with lower voltages. Can output up to 9V. Can be cut in half to fit the size to the application.
- Size: 105 x 130mm
Ynvisible - www.ynvisible.com
- Technology: Electrochromic displays
- Driving Voltage: 1.5V
- Thickness: 500 microns
- Contrast: ΔE > 35
From Prototypes into Products
We've been working with Conductive Inkjet Technology, whose quick prototyping service makes it incredibly easy and fast to make flexible boards on plastic film. You can find out more on the prototyping service here: http://inkjetflex.com/site/rapid-prototyping/
Vivainnova is a company specialized in the volume manufacturing of UFPC (Ultra Flexible Printed Circuits) technology, that offers flexible printed electronic devices based on this technology for the worldwide market.
Also mentioned in the video:
Printoo provides the platform to bring this amazing technology together!
Check out the backer rewards below to find out what you get for each reward level:
Note: In the rewards column, BLE = Bluetooth 4.0. Ynvisible displays = Ynvisible Electrochromic displays. Printed battery connectors (in the Printed Prime packs) and Ynvisible display drivers are not mentioned in the reward column - please refer to the table above to know how many come with each pack. Each Ynvisible display driver module allows 2 displays to be connected at once.

We can't wait to see what you do with Printoo!
Ynvisible is a start-up company spun-out of YDreams. YDreams has worked since 2000 in augmented reality, location based services and interactive advertising. Ynvisible was created to work with technologies that would enable the vision of ubiquitous computing – giving intelligence and interactivity to any object or surface.
Our team members most involved with this project have been:
Manuel Câmara - Manuel is the New Products manager for Ynvisible. He's been at Ynvisible for four years, focused on developing solutions combining design and printed electronics both for client projects as well as for the company's own developments. He was also a member of parent company YDream's YLabs, having played a part in launching other spin-outs YDreams Robotics and Azorean (makers of the Ziphius).
Pedro Bento - Pedro is a senior Graphics Designer with 10 years of experience, the last three of which on-board Ynvisible. He has led design proposals and product design efforts for major international clients at Ynvisible, including designing with Printed Electronics circuits and components.
André Leitão - André holds an MSc degree in Electronic Engineering and has been with Ynvisible for 2 years, having extensive experience in hybrid electronics circuits - combining rigid and printed electronics. Prior to joining Ynvisible he worked in high voltage electronic circuits and industrial equipment.
Paulo Rosa - Paulo is a Digital Media PhD candidate who has been carrying out research in collaboration with Ynvisible for the past four years. His work lies in the development of low-tech and low-cost Printed Electronics digital communication technologies seamless integrated into the physical world.
António Moreira - António has an MSc in Economics and Management of Science, Technology and Innovation and is now at Ynvisible on a business development role. Previous he has worked in market research and as an innovation consultant.
Manuel Lino - Manuel is a photographer and videographer with over ten years experience in broadcast TV, TV commercials, music videos and concert photography. You can check out his work at manuelino.com.
US operations and marketing support are led by John Rodriguez (J-Ro) and Stage Two, specialists in early stage consumer electronics companies.
Printoo would not have been possible without the contributions of Adriano Campos, Lúcia Gomes, Jani-Mikael Kuusisto, Luís Ribeiro, Sofia Martins, Elson Frade and João Lucas.
During the Product Refinement phase, slight changes to the boards can be made in order to enhance the performance of the boards, namely:
- We're working to make the boards smaller using smaller 2.54 connectors;
- We may pick a different BLE module;
- Some designs may be optimized.
Risks and challenges
- Building strong, reliable flexible boards
Flexible boards endure a lot of mechanical stress when they are being flexed. We have been working with our assembly partners in order to guarantee a robust solution. While we expect to undergo extensive quality control testing in the months after the campaign, we are confident we already have a stable solution.
- Sourcing components and mass production
We've lined up the sourcing for all the components. We have commitments from the printed electronics component suppliers to deliver with time to spare. However, there is a diversity of suppliers for all the components from which there may be delays in supply.
- Slight design changes
As we undergo quality control and further testing, the Printoo boards may undergo slight design changes. If necessary, we will optimize for mechanical robustness first, usability and aesthetics second. We do not expect, however that significant changes will be required.
