Help me produce a print run of Hungry Ghost: Book One!
Hello friends! For the past three (or more?) years, I have been developing, writing, and illustrating my first graphic novel, Hungry Ghost. It's a story about Carey, a student afflicted with anorexia, and Alanna, a talented but fragile middle school violinist; and their struggle to take up space without apology. To add to their personal demons, a serial killer has been active in a neighboring state and has begun to circle closer to their orbit.
This project began as a love letter to my hometown of Providence, Rhode Island: A small city full of amazing arts communities, architecture, and unique local culture. Providence serves as a perfect backdrop for any kind of novel, and indeed becomes its own character in Hungry Ghost!
After a series of fits and starts, I have hit a good work rhythm and continue to make steady progress toward my ultimate goal of finishing the story at roughly 120 pages. I plan to hit the logical midpoint of the story (and the end of Book One) at 72 pages this November, and would love to be able to create a modest print run of 500 copies.
Why a print run? Isn't it enough to publish online?
I have been publishing online in semi-regular weekly installments. While the webcomic platform has allowed me to gain some readership, Hungry Ghost was never meant to be a serial comic. It is at its heart a graphic novel, and lends itself much more to a print format to be read in one sitting, rather than tuning in every week.
Having inventory of print editions will allow me to exhibit at comic book conventions and expos, which I could not do otherwise. I also intend on selling at local bookstores in Providence and surrounding areas.
What will the book look like?
I have chosen to utilize PrintNinja, as they're well-versed in comics and graphic novel printing. The book will be a perfect-bound standard trade paperback with a page count of 72. The cover will be in color, interiors in black & white.
Why should I pre-order your book?
I really believe in my story and have crafted it with love. If your interests are similar to mine, you might find yourself enjoying the read! Hungry Ghost has got a lot of stuff going on, including art history, detailed backgrounds with a solid sense of place, classical music, criminal investigation, strong and multi-dimensional female characters, and even some humor.
Where is my pledge going?
100% printing and shipping costs. On the off chance that pledges exceed the goal amount, I'll just be getting nicer paper stock, or even a larger number of books if there is a demand.
Please give me a visual representation of the pledge reward tiers.
Thanks for reading and supporting!
Risks and challenges
As this is my first time getting a book professionally printed, I can't 100% guarantee that the printing will be completed in the time allotted in this proposal. I will do my best to be very upfront and accountable for your investment!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
