Est. in 2008, we're expanding to build an interactive goat dairy at a primary school in Grenada, West Indies, the 1st of its kind.
We made it to our $55,000 mark & now we are going beyond.
All additional donations will go a long way towards replacing our 1989 mazda truck. After close to $10,000 in repairs this past year alone. It is down again because of a broken spring. See more in our Update #7.
All donations are U.S. (501c3) tax deductible!
DO YOU BELIEVE... in a healthy life? In a healthy planet? That ALL children and families should have the opportunity to grow and eat healthy, nutritious organic food for their own use and for our local markets? Then we invite you to embrace this living example...a holistic, sustainable goat dairy agriculture education model in Grenada, West Indies that can be replicated anywhere in the world. This initiative is an extension of Grenada’s first goat dairy (“The Goat Dairy”), which is an independent, non-profit operating dairy project located at Belmont Estate in Grenada.
The Grenada Goat Dairy Project, also known as The Goat Dairy, is a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable agriculture production, education and hands-on training to empower lower income farmers and their families to achieve economic independence, food security and fulfilling lives.
The Goat Dairy provides training to all farmers, with particular focus on women and youth, in effective animal husbandry, improvements in livestock genetics, development of local feedstuffs and healthful milk and cheese production at our education and demonstration facility located at Belmont Estate, Hermitage, St. Patrick.
The sustainability model for the dairy has been designed to include milk purchases from local farmers. To bolster milk production, high quality dairy goats were brought from the U.S. in 2010 to establish a breeding stock whose offspring have been shared with local farmers at a nominal fee. Since 2009, over 100 goats have been placed with local farmers to expand the network of independent producers.
Our Chèvre cheese is the first locally-produced and marketed goat dairy product in Grenada. It has been well-received by local chefs, restaurants and markets, and production now recovers approximately 70% of our operating costs for our central education and demonstration facility.
In fact, demand for our cheese currently exceeds production capacity because we do not have enough milk reaching our central processing facility, underscoring both the need for educational outreach and the exciting opportunity we have to make a difference in the lives of the community through the recruitment and training of a new cohort of self-sufficient farmers.
Why and How the School Project Will Work:
To ensure a solid, long-term foundation for community empowerment, food-security and responsible citizenship in Grenada, The Goat Dairy has now partnered with St. Patrick’s Anglican Public School to create an educational dairy facility specifically aimed at youth development. This will be a fully functioning goat farm, complete with barn and milk production capacity. The Goat Dairy will provide training for staff and students and will supervise all operational aspects of the facility. Milk produced at St. Patrick’s will be processed at the central facility of The Goat Dairy, located at Belmont Estate.
As a nucleus for learning, the St. Patrick’s facility will offer endless educational benefits and dividends in practical science, math, language, home economics, responsible business practices, community ethics and the arts. Through both hands-on and classroom activities, students will learn the responsibilities associated with animal care, growing their own food, composting and record-keeping. To expand its impact, this community-wide program will network with additional schools to create opportunities for other children and young adults in the surrounding region.
Students will have the opportunity to explore creative expression through the development of their own print and video media productions to instruct their peers and new farmers on the basic concepts they have learned. They will participate in awareness campaigns featured in local and regional media, such as The Goat Dairy’s website, Facebook, local newspapers, television and radio. These broad educational and citizen-building experiences arising from the St. Patrick dairy facility will significantly contribute to the development of responsible citizenship for a new generation of Grenadians.
