YOU KNOW SPANGLISH FLY. You've loved our shows. You've danced to us live, then brought our music home and done the boogaloo in your living room.
Get involved in a new way! We're recording a full-length album at last, bringing you an LP's worth of old-school style Latin Boogaloo, and we need your support to complete the studio work and post-production. SPANGLISH FLY has always been all about our community, about the interaction between performer and audience. Now is your chance to participate as we take our next step!
SPANGLISH FLY has been around almost four years and has released an EP and two singles. Why not more? Recording an 11-piece band is expensive, yo! We're raising money here on Kickstarter, offering great rewards in return for support, so that we can finally show the world what we're capable of: 12 original boogaloos and 45 minutes of hard-driving party music!* All featuring our propulsive 4-part Latin percussion section, 4 explosive horns, swinging and bluesy bass, piano, and organ, and, of course, the searingly soulful vocals of Erica Ramos!

The Story of SPANGLISH FLY and You!
The story of SPANGLISH FLY is also the story of its fans, the story of when YOU joined our journey! The band formed in 2009 with the mission of bringing 1960s-style Latin boogaloo back live to the audiences of NYC and the world! (What's Latin boogaloo? Check out this documentary!)
And YOU responded! Maybe you saw us at one of our initial shows, like at Camaradas El Barrio, our favorite Spanish Harlem joint. Or maybe you got on board in 2010 when we cut our demo EP, earning us comparisons to Sharon Jones and Antibalas, and Ray Barretto! Back then, the band looked and sounded like this:
(Thanks to Adrian Manzano for the video, and Barbes for the setting.)
Or maybe you came across us in the subsequent year or two, when we recorded a 45, straight to analog, at Brooklyn's Truth and Soul Studios, and started playing venues like SOB's and Le Poisson Rouge, and making our monthly appearances at our buddy DJ Turmix's Boogalo! Party. Maybe you got wind of us through media features such as this piece from NPR's "The World."
Maybe you joined us over the last year, when we recorded our latest single, produced by Latin soul legend Harvey Averne, and played shows up and down the East Coast, including the Kennedy Center in DC! Maybe you found us through our videos for Martin Cohen's Congahead.com:
However and whenever you became part of the Spanglish Fly story, we'd love for you to help us write the next chapter!
Support the SPANGLISH FLY album
We're heading into the studio to make a full-length record that culminates the last 4 years of labor and love! Please contribute what you can. We're offering great rewards: not only goodies such as music and t-shirts, but also opportunities to hang with us in our studio and learn what makes us tick--plus other special deals! (See the rewards page for details.)
As you probably know, Kickstarter rules are that we need to meet our $7,000 goal, or pledges aren't charged and we don't get a red cent (and you don't get your reward, of course). So stay posted here and help us reach the goal!
If we reach $7,000, we'll be able to complete the recording, mixing, mastering of our long-awaited full-length album, and press it to CD! (We'll release it on line as well.)
But we're hoping to blow past that figure, and be able to do much more with the record:
If we reach $9,000, we'll press the album to vinyl and release it the way boogaloo is meant to be heard! A full-sized 12" with a gorgeous cover! Vinyl fans, give us a shout if you're rooting for this, and spread the word.
If we hit $10,000, or go beyond it, we'll be able to tie-in special features we've been dreaming about. Like what? Stickers with download codes! A Spanglish Fly "Latin Soul Stew" recipe book! A Spanglish Fly comic strip! An additional vinyl 45 to accompany the vinyl LP!
And hey, if we go waaay past our goal, say to $15,000, we can spend more time in the studio, making more music, and would try to bring guest performers in. (Can't say who, but they would be very special and exciting people, they would.)
THANK YOU and STAY IN TOUCH!
Whether you can contribute $1 or $1,000, whether you do this RIGHT NOW or on the eve of our deadline (June 25th), we thank you for your involvement! Keep up with our campaign, and our shows, and all of our news, via our website and email list or our FB page. Come see us at our upcoming appearances at Lucille's (6/1), Barbes (6/1), Nublu (6/15), DC's Tropicalia (6/22), and Baltimore's Latinofest (6/23).
SEE YOU ON THE DANCE FLOOR! BOOGALOO!

Risks and challenges
Rest assured, we intend to put out this record come the proverbial hell or high water! Of course, we could get derailed (unlikely) or delayed (less unlikely) by any one of the following circumstances:
Band members going on tour for large sacks of money, a slow post-production process, the flu, debilitating perfectionism, a band-wide conversion to some sect that forbids boogaloo, acts of nature, hand injuries, the Black Plague, an attack of the killer tomatoes, a crashed hard drive, etc.
Such things happen, we're told, and might delay us or increase our costs unexpectedly. But a life in music teaches persistence, and we'll put our persistence to work making sure we get this record out to the world, as soon as possible, maybe late but surely not never, with your help.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
