Hi There!

My name is Elisa Spigariol, I am the writer and director of Not a Toy Story. I was lucky enough to write and direct two short-films before, one of them got into the official selection at Buffer Film Festival in Toronto and the other was funded by Kickstarter as well! In this section I am going to be outlining and detailing what Not a Toy Story is and why we require funding for this project to be made possible.

The project is scheduled to start shooting in March for a 4 days intensive shoot in London bringing the story to life.

Not a Toy Story is something that means a lot to me. The story itself, overcoming traumas and beliefs that are deeply rooted in you for a lifetime are themes which are very close to my heart.

IDEA OUTLINE

My intention is to make a coming-of-age short-film about a blind teenager losing his father to cancer. The father took care of his son too much and not  himself. The kid gets sent to live with his aunt who he never met before as she was volunteering in the third world fleeing her own problems. She wasn't even at the funeral. The two clash and try and force each other to face the things they hate; but also their rudeness and honesty help them somehow realise you can't keep living in a constant state of self-misery and pessimism. The themes are the idea of overcoming trauma and suffering but also learning that you are not the centre of the universe and that some things can change in life... if you let them.

WHAT DOES THIS FILM MEAN TO ME?

This story is very close to my heart and it means a lot to me. The themes are issues I had to overcome myself – and I am still overcoming – so I understand very well how being in a bad place can make you become a bit of an asshole and blame the whole world as an excuse. I want to show how hardships in life are a given, you can't escape them. But sometimes you actually have to put in a bit of effort yourself to see what good you can get out of it.

MOODBOARD:

WHY DO I NEED FUNDING AND WHAT FOR?

I unfortunately do not come from a wealthy background and even to stay in London I have to work constantly and manage going to university as well. I have increased the amount of days and hours I work to be able to provide  as much as I can for this film. Unfortunately, making films is an expensive activity, and I won't be able to afford all of it by myself.

We are planning to shoot across 4 days where we will have to pay for equipment expenses and travel/food for the members of the cast and crew. We will also have to pay the actors according to their rates.

Location is going to have to be paid for and it will have to be a whole house with two bedrooms and a living room for the entire 4 days. We also have a scene that includes a car. Production has already started to outline what we need to bring the project to life.

Production design will also have a heavy impact on the making of the film. For example, one of the scenes includes a trashed living room and the look of the film will require many quirky items and clothes to convey the personality of the characters and make sure it looks realistic. Some of the scenes include fake food as well and a lot of broken items and furniture.

The Director of Photography for the film has already outlined the equipment that will be needed in terms of lights/camera and has requested quotes to rental houses. It is vital for equipment to be of a high standard so is therefore one of our main expenses, especially as the scenes are mainly interiors and need to be lit artificially. The equipment list may not be huge, but keeping it for 4 days has a high cost.

We will also have to transport all the kit, props and food to location. This will be an added expense, especially considering the size of stands and lighting kit.

Most of the funding will go on the kit, location, production design and expenses/pay for all the people working on it. We will obviously be putting as much money as we can in to the project ourselves.

WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE FILM ONCE FINISHED?

Our plan once the film is finished is to submit it into festivals, some smaller ones and some bigger ones.

Further Funding: If we are fortunate enough to go over our predicted goal, we will be able to take this film even further. This includes: Better location, better food, fair rates for everyone, distribution and post production including festivals, original music compositions and advanced colour grade.

Thank you very much for your time and interest in this project!

Risks and challenges

Risks include falling ill, being short on time and not reaching the goal we need.
We are doing our best to make sure to be on schedule, that everyone is available for working and that the location is locked for the dates.

A challenge will be squeezing everything is such a short production time, but we are all on it and working really hard to make sure everything will happen at the right time and all phases of Pre Production, Production and Post Production are managed accordingly.

We are being realistic, quick and working really hard.
