Jbird Collective Leather Eyewear
Jbird Collective is pleased to be the first to offer the only eyewear made 100% from leather. By blending age-old leather working techniques with state of the art precision, we've created sunglasses unlike any other. If you have respect for handcrafted leather goods and high quality accessories, we believe Jbird Collective Eyewear is for you. We strive to exceed our customers expectations with the attention to detail, care, and overall craftsmanship that goes into each pair of our glasses.
Leather is arguably the most diverse material in the world. No man-made fabric has the abrasion resistance, unique aging qualities, and molding capabilities found in all natural leather. By making our frames of 100% pure vegetable tanned leather, we are able to capitalize on those attributes in addition to other leather working details, such as hand stitching and edge burnishing.
If you spend time in the sun you'll notice how your skin gets darker. The same goes for vegetable tanned leather, but it does a better job of holding on to is beautiful color! Every time leather sunglasses are worn they absorb natural perspiration and oil from skin, all of which will tell a visually striking story that differs from every other pair.
OUR PROCESS & LOCAL PRODUCTION
Through extensive trial and error we've developed the technique of layering molded leather to create precisely shaped frames. The most amazing thing about them is that they keep leather's unique tactile feel and characteristics, allowing them to wear according to use and to naturally tan in the sun like all vegetable tanned leather products.
It's a challenge to explain how our eyewear feels in your hand and on your face as they are truly the first of their kind. They feel much like a dense rubber, allowing them to flex and return to their shape while maintaining the valuable feel and appearance of leather as mentioned earlier.
After months of development and countless prototypes, we've found a solution that challenges what is thought to be possible.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work" -Thomas Edison
We take pride in United States manufacturing and greatly respect those who are committed to it. Likewise, we believe in sourcing sustainable materials in order to produce natural eyewear by hand. All Jbird Collective leather eyewear will be manufactured in our studio in Portland, Oregon. Quality will always be our #1 goal, and there's no better way to make it happen than to do it ourselves.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?
Your support would help us source the necessary material and equipment needed to begin production, which includes:
Material: Vegetable tanned leather hides, Carl Zeiss polarized lenses, Metal hinges, and Waxed thread.
Equipment: A large portion of our funding will go toward equipment that will ensure the highest level of quality at a cost-effective price for our backers. This would include more dies and presses to stamp out the leather, as well as custom molds to shape the eyewear.
Production: We will need to expand our team of skilled crafters.
WHAT BRAND OF LEATHER DO WE USE?
We've selected Pennsylvania based Wickett & Craig of America as our supplier for a few reasons: They have been manufacturing in the U.S. for 148 years, they uphold environmentally conscious standards, and their vegetable tanned leather develops the most gorgeous patina!
WHAT BRAND OF LENSES DO WE USE?
We teamed up with Carl Zeiss Optics to ensure that we received the highest quality polarized lenses. Each pair is custom cut to fit Jbird Collective leather frames.
We will offer two lens color options: dark grey polarized and dark brown polarized.
JBIRD COLLECTIVE EYEWEAR LINE-UP
We are offering our eyewear in 3 styles: Burnside, Hawthorne, and Vista
Each frame has 4 color options:
HOW DO I GET ONE?
Look through the accessories and reward bundles until you find the one for you, pull the trigger, then relax. We'll find out what color combo of eyewear you'd like when we send out the survey.
We're currently designing a try-on booth for Made Here PDX, in downtown Portland. This will be a great opportunity to confirm your frame shape and color selection! (COMING SOON)

WHO IS JBIRD COLLECTIVE?
We're a small group of industrial designers and craftsmen based in Portland, Oregon. There's only one reason we come to the studio everyday: we like making cool shit! We are focused on finding original solutions to design the highest quality products. We seek to innovate: not for the sake of making something different, but making it better.
Vince Lombardi said it best:
"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."
WHAT WE LEARNED FROM OUR FIRST CAMPAIGN
We were very pleased with the success of our first Kickstarter campaign! It exposed us to a great customer base and allowed us to distribute our products around the world. Like many start-up companies, we experienced a few growing pains.
Our manufacturing partner wasn't prepared for the volume Kickstarter generated, which caused serious delays on the Techpack Backpack. Although it was a huge frustration, both for us and our customers, It made us stronger and more knowledgeable in the end.
Now that we've got the ins and outs of international shipping under our belt, we're confident moving forward. Every patient backer received their reward until the campaign was finished - something we promised to follow through on regardless of time and cost!
There were many lessons to be learned from our first campaign, all of which will ensure higher quality and faster production this time around. We have since moved all production in-house in order to have complete control over the delivery timeline.
PRODUCTION AND DELIVERY SCHEDULE
WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY GET WET?
A little bit of perspiration won't hurt them. In fact, the moisture and oils from your skin create some of the most unique wear patterns. On the other hand, Jumping into water would not be ideal for leather eyewear, or any leather product for that matter. If it happens promptly wipe them and let them air dry at room temperature.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY GET TOO HOT?
These are sunglasses we're talking about, so wear them in the sun! Keep in mind: they are also a natural material that can be warped by too much heat exposure. If you're not wearing them, keep them safe in a case. Do not leave them on your dashboard or anywhere that creates a magnified heat box effect. This could cause them to warp in ways that are irreparable.
DO YOU SHIP WORLDWIDE?
Yes, anywhere in the world at the expense of the buyer.
Risks and challenges
Jbird Collective is quit familiar with the setbacks and challenges that can happen in the world of design and manufacturing. From quality issues to lost product, and even having to sever ties with manufacturing partners, we've seen a lot in the past 2 years. This time around we have very carefully selected suppliers based on their quality, reliability, and rich history in their respective field. Our chosen partners are not only Industry leaders, but have also proven they can deliver.
Our decision to bring all our manufacturing in-house helps to eliminate the risks in producing a new product. It also allows us to be more agile and to control the quality of our products. We will be able to delegate tasks and add crafters as volume increases.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
