New Teaser + 2019 Progress Report

Hey everyone!

I know a lot of you are concerned about development, so I thought I'd bring you up to speed. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, however, we do have an announcement to make. 

Witchmarsh's composer, Francisco, was awarded a grant with which to record some of the soundtrack with a live studio band. We love what we've heard so far, and have put together a teaser video featuring the game's combat theme, some new gameplay, and clips from the recording sessions.

It's not quite a new trailer or release date, but we'll hopefully get there before long. We hope you enjoyed it! :)

Why it's (still) taking so long:

In spite of some obstacles, made all the more serious by the small nature of our team; 2018 was still a good year for progress.

Looking at the screenshots, it's easy to forget that Witchmarsh is an RPG, and not a platformer with RPG bits tacked on. All of these databases (items, skill, spells, attributes, enemies/npcs, equipment) require heaps of dev-hours to put together.

On such a long project, burnout can creep in, too. There are times when it feels like something of a Sisyphean task. Lately however, we've tried to be more conscious of this, structuring our work and lives in a way which avoids over-stretching - like taking plenty of time off over the holidays, for example!

It also hasn't helped that we've remade elements of the game that were finished - like the smaller characters seen in the Kickstarter trailer.

As we've touched on before, we understand the frustration going around, because we feel it too. We want the game out there, but we also want it to be right, while remaining loyal to the original concept.

Because of this, we've decided to wait a little longer before setting a release date. We hope to bring you more news on this soon! As always, thanks for your support and patience. We couldn't have come this far without the help of our backers and community.

We hope you'll stick with us. We think 2019 will be an exciting year for the project. :)

      I'm really glad to see this project is still alive. For a while (a long while) I thought it had died. This renews my hope. Thanks for sticking with it, I'm sticking with you too!

      I agree with everyone else. Make the best game you can. I'll be excited to play it whenever it happens to be finished.

      People should remember that you do have the devlog that gets updated frequently (at least the last time I checked), and it is good that you do updates here as well. The music sounds good and I'm glad for the progress.

      This project really hits a chord for me and I'm still looking forward to the final product. I hope the team keeps up high spirits and I don't mind the extra time to make the game as good as possible.

      Absolutely shocking and unacceptable for you to take so long between updates guys! If you start to feel like it's just too much work and you're burnt out just remember, you already have all our money so we'll send the Kickstarter mafia after you <3 Don't do it again.

      Happy new year to the team. It is great that you guys are really sticking to your concept and trying to get the best game out there without rushing anything. I have been following the project on and off and I can't wait to play it.

      Loving the live music! This looks quite unlike any other game. I'm overjoyed to know you guys are still chipping away at it. I'm not giving up as long as you're not! Take your time and make a game people will be talking about for years to come. You clearly have it in you. Onward!

      Thanks everyone. For a change, we actually took a long Christmas break and we feel that it's had a positive impact on our creativity and levels of burnout.

      Somebody on Facebook asked about the backer Alpha/Beta test. We haven't forgotten, and we look forward to rolling these out when we feel the game's ready for testing. Right now there are still a few key systems develop (or un-break...) - and still some nasty bugs to squash. We're getting closer each week, though, and we're looking forward to hearing your feedback. :)

      I've backed a few games on kickstarter years ago and having not received any of the games basically gave up on ever getting them.

      But your project gives me hope. I'd rather you take the time to make what you really want as opposed to rushing it as long as their are updates/signs you're still working on it.

      This is why I LOVE the frequent developer updates on the forum! I never expect them to be huge substantial pieces, I just like knowing you guys are still active :)

      This project was the first thing I ever backed on KS. I'm anxious to play it, but not if it's gonna be rushed into distribution. I'm ok with you guys making the best possible product. The game is looking great...and love the music! Thanks for the update! :)
