About this project
What is The Ottoman?
The Ottoman is a 3D animated short film set in a fictionalized Ottoman Empire, with a visual design inspired by European comic-book artists like Jean “Mœbius” Giraud. The production is being developed by a team of artists from around the world.
You can learn more about the film here:

Some short clips of the film:
- Running time: 12 minutes
- Genre: action/adventure
- Aspect ratio: widescreen 2.4 : 1
- Language: n/a (no dialog)
- Software: Cinema 4D
For the last several years, the Ottoman team has been putting together high-quality animated shots on an extremely low budget. Our process has yielded very successful results (as you can see in the video above), but as we continue to develop our tools and expand the team, our financial constraints are threatening to undermine our progress.
What we need:
The $75,000 figure that we’re raising to fund the remaining three sequences of the film was arrived at using the following assumptions:
- Shots are funded at a rate of roughly $100 per second of completed animation.
- There are about 600 seconds of animation remaining, so around $60,000 is needed purely for the animation work.
- Technical and compositing costs increase over time as the animation builds up. But assuming roughly 15% of the cost of animation: $9,000.
- The remaining $6000 (probably more) is expected to go to Kickstarter fees and shipping rewards.
What happens with any extra money raised:
The more money we raise, the larger we can grow the team and the faster we can complete the animation. A higher budget would also allow us to bring in high-level talent during post-production, yielding better image quality, better special effects and a top-notch soundtrack.
Who are we?
The Ottoman team is a diverse group of animators, modelers, texture artists, technical directors and cinematographers from Los Angeles to Argentina to Beijing. Their past film work includes:
Frozen, Zootopia, Warcraft, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Metegol, Robocop, Shark Tale, Guardians of the Galaxy and many more.
The Ottoman is produced by Luckbat Studio and Circus Ink Entertainment, Ltd.
Everyone who backs The Ottoman will be given access to the finished film as soon as the short is done, well in advance of its public premiere. This is due to film-festival restrictions that often require a film to be kept off the internet in order to qualify.
However, because the release of the film could take place as much as two years from now (depending on how this fundraising effort goes), we’ve put a lot of work into creating some amazing rewards that you’ll be able to enjoy right away!

Risks and challenges
The team has been moving forward on “Ottoman” for several years now, and our work keeps getting stronger. We’ve animated a quarter of the film already, and are confident that we can bring it home. However, the low-budget nature of the production means that most of the crew are contributing part-time while holding down other gigs, which is one of the reasons for this campaign.
The biggest risk with collaborative projects like this one is loss of momentum. If too many animators move on to other projects, or if some key technicians get sidetracked, it can slow the pipeline down to a trickle. Getting the project back on track after that would likely require a painful amount of time and money.
Having said that, our team has been growing steadily over the years, not shrinking. We’ve built a great collaborative community around “Ottoman,” along with solid tools to maintain it. We’re remain confident that we can continue to attract new talent.
In the event that the campaign is successful, we’ll likely experience some growing pains as we figure out how to distribute funds among the team, and how much to set aside for contingencies. But we’ve been preparing for this campaign for over a year, and we remain confident that we can handle the needs of all our backers as well as the challenges of team-building.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
