About this project
The Underground King is an upcoming racing strategy RPG for PC, MAC, Linux & AirConsole where you recruit the city's low-lives, assemble junkyard cars and have them compete in street racing events for profit and infamy!
- Strategic management of drivers, cars and equipment.
- Diverse assortment of random events to keep things fresh!
- Procedurally generated content. Each play is unique!
- Different types of races with unique rules and diverse locations.
We are developing the game in Unity. Bellow you can download an Early Alpha DEMO of the game. It is FREE & we made a build for all 3 major computer platforms:
AirConsole is an online platform that transforms your browser into a video game console and your smartphones into gamepads.
We will be developing a lightweight multiplayer module on it which will eventually be merged into the computer version after thorough testing.
We are going to launch the game on all the major game stores when the release builds are ready and we pass the various submission processes.
You play as the protagonist of the story, a manager striving to become the new Underground King of street racing.
Coming to the racing scene, you have no street reputation, no real crew nor any proper cars to race with. What you DO have is one hobo you literally paid in peanuts and uncle Wart’s hippie van that’s been rusting in the garage since Woodstock.
By winning races, dealing in the black market and spreading your influence over the people, you will let The City’s top dogs know that there's a new player in town.
The dregs of the city will flock to you for a quick buck, the adrenaline of racing or motivated by similar wants of overcoming adversity. You will earn reputation, money and loot to upgrade your social status, drivers and cars.
The Underground King has a game core comprised of two stages: Management and Racing. In the main map you organize, strategize, upgrade and interact with events, while in the racing mode you compete with your car and drivers against enemy teams for resources.
On your desk back home, you have a folder with your item list, profile sheets of your drivers / cars and a map of The City with various marked points of interest.
When you participate in a race, you choose which car to use and up to 3 drivers with various roles and abilities to control that car.
Your team competes against enemy teams that follow the same race rules, typically, crossing the finish line first. Each team, including your own, has unique abilities and stats that make every race exciting and challenging.
Drivers and cars come with their own set of abilities. Combining these abilities can produce builds that easily surpass specific obstacles. This adds a huge layer of strategy on picking which drivers go in which car for which race.
The City is alive. Lots of things are happening each day, and you can involve yourself in the drama and conflicts as they happen. You’re not alone though, your drivers can help you get the best rewards, or the least painful penalties.
Acquire items from the Shop, from Events or from winning races. Items have trait and stat bonuses that, when equipped, upgrade the driver or car.
They are all procedurally generated so you can create builds for specific purposes, like increasing race rewards, passing events more easily or even to defeat a specific boss by targeting specific weaknesses!
Each item, car and driver comes with a range of possible traits, each from its own list, depending on the generated level. Bosses and enemies work similarly, but they have their own special list and mechanics since they are controlled by the A.I.
You know how some games change your very being after you finish them? Then you get an existential crisis about what to do with yourself and your life?
Here’s a few that did this to us: Grand Theft Auto, Darkest Dungeon, XCOM, Reigns and King of Dragon Pass, but also Mad Max and the Need For Speed series. Movies and animations also played a crucial role in our inspiration. Gorillaz, Wacky Races and Ed, Edd and Eddy are to name a few. I mean, it's a 2D game, of course we’ve drawn inspiration from cartoons. Like a certain network of cartoons.
Interested in some behind the scenes? You got it, friend!
Here's the racing scene in Unity for the Countryside track. This specific track has parallaxing backgrounds of mountains, hills, clouds, trains & other things we could think of (we’ll add more environment goodness later), to beautify and enrich the background.
And here’s a secret about one of the drivers that no one will know except, you and me:
Some of our friends have made gameplay videos and we think they are great! Check them out to get a feel of the game! Or play the game yourself using this download link!
We’re a small two person team and we’ve been eating and breathing games since we were kids. When we decided to start working on The Underground King, we knew we had to work fulltime and sacrifice sunlight exposure to make the best, most fun game we can possibly make on our own.
After a lot of feedback and introspection we realized that there’s a potential upgrade for the game beyond our financial reach that can be achieved through outside help.
That’s where you come in. Your backing of this project will help improve the game’s polish level, shorten development duration and increase the game’s accessibility with more languages.
We have 11 bosses lined up, after which you face the current Underground King. Each defeated boss will unlock a faction associated with him/her, a new race track, as well as a driver class, car model and items for both.
We will be releasing each boss as we implement them, the Closed Alpha pledgers being the first to play against them. The end boss, the Underground King will remain a mistery untill release. It is the END BOSS after all...
CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve made it to end of the page. No, really, it's commendable to have read through everything. You deserve a little something, and here it is:
Join this exclusive super-duper secret mailing list where we will be emailing codes for special in-game items, drivers and vehicles.
You need to have a copy of the game for the codes to work.
Risks and challenges
We are already paying for the base development out of our life savings. We are fully committed with time and effort on making the game, so there is absolutely no risk of the game not seeing the light of day.
WE HAVE BEEN GREENLIT UNDER 24 HOURS !
We are using Unity to develop The Underground King. It is a powerful game engine, used by millions, ever growing in power and capability, but also getting more efficient and streamlined. So far, we have surpassed all technical obstacles, but we cannot predict what can come up in the future.
We have an expert Unity developer in the team, and many friends and former colleagues we can resort to, in case of emergencies. The Unity developer community is also extremely helpful as well as Unity’s bug support team is prompt to fix any problems we find with the engine itself.
Three things are certain in life. Death, taxes, and developers can’t estimate projects.
While we know we have surpassed the hard part of the game like creating the core game loop, some random things impossible to predict can pop up, and eat extra time. We are using GIT to create hourly backups of the project and if any debilitating problem appears, it's quite easy to revert to a stable version.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
