AboutFinally, a new product comes to market that makes millions of lives easier! The Luxedo Projection System dresses up any surface inside or outside of a home or business. No more hassle of decorating for a party or the holidays. No more signs and banners in stores or businesses. Imagine a device that projects anything you want – graphics, decorations, advertisements or messages – on any surface you want to use. From the comfort of your desk or couch, you can create compelling messages, elaborate holiday decorations, or just have fun designing anything you want to project. Using your phone, laptop or mobile device, you can string Christmas lights around your home, advertise this week’s special sale, or created a magical atmosphere for your daughter’s birthday party. Let’s say it is Christmas time and you want to decorate the outside of your home or business with icicle lights on the gutters, a Santa on the garage door, and wreathes on the windows. Just log into the Luxedo website via computer or smart phone, the projection devise will automatically take a photo of the building, and then decorate your home electronically! If you have used this decorating pattern using the site in the past, you would simply select the saved skin, and it would be displayed on the outside surface. If you are decorating this pattern for the first time, all you would have to do is create a new skin, drag images from the catalog to the skins, position and scale atop the still image of the outside surface, click save, and the images will be displayed on the outside surface. Should you want to reuse the pattern, it will be saved in your personal file.
The weather-resistant Luxedo Projection System is not limited to just decorating. It can also help advertise, entertain, and celebrate, both indoors and outdoors. Businesses can advertise discounts, specials or new services without printing expensive banners or signs – and the projected messages are bright and more eye-catching than traditional signage. Businesses can also change those messages or images at any time.
The 2500-Lumen Luxedo Projection System utilizes 3LCD technology, which is superior to older LCD and DLP technologies and delivers a bright, vibrant projected image. The real power behind the system is the Luxedo web app. Preloaded with thousands of graphics including holiday themes, fonts, graphic images and a drag-and-drop user interface, the Luxedo app allows users to quickly and easily design whatever they want and project it on any surface.
No need to worry about this projection device getting stolen. We have three anti-theft features built into Luxedo. The first is the ability to physically lock it and chain it securely in place. The second is the ability to lock out non-authorized users. If a thief steals the device, it will not even turn on without your logon information. The third is the ability to trace the location of the unit if an unauthorized user connects to it.
How Luxedo works
Our site is designed with ease-of-use in mind. The site will stream a picture of the house/business in the background and allow you to create different skins to place on that house/business. The site allows you to manipulate the images however the user would like.
You can easily create and save skins.
One can easily scale and place images where ever they would like.
How It Began
Shortly after I(Matt) got married in 2015, my wife and I were driving to my mom’s house for the Thanksgiving holiday. During the eight hour drive the topic of Christmas and decorating came up. Now, like many guys, I am not that interested in decorating the house – inside or out. The discussion ended in an argument and we decided to drop the subject for the rest of the drive. After thinking about it for a few hours I realized that just because I didn’t think decorating our house was important, it clearly meant a lot to my wife. I’m guessing we aren’t the first couple to have this disagreement. I love my wife and I want her to be happy. I also don’t want to spend my time on something I don’t value. As an entrepreneur, the wheels started spinning.
It was early December 2015. I told Harold about my idea and he thought it would be fun to see how we might bring it to life. When he got home, he located his personal projector. He and his 14 year old son grabbed a stool, a chair, the projector, and his laptop and headed to the front yard. He lined it up so it covered the front of the house and then opened a PowerPoint presentation and projected a black background onto the house. Then Harold started adding images to the presentation. In no time, he had a working prototype – with Christmas decorations projected onto his house! Below is the original picture showing the results of that first trial:
Having demonstrated that the idea would work using about $2000 worth of equipment, we knew our first challenge would be to reduce the overall cost. Our strategy was to buy projectors to simplify and remove duplication between projector and laptop. We developed over a dozen prototypes during the next 16 months – testing for brilliance and clarity. Other challenges were miniaturization, reducing component cost and improving form factor. Another was how to weatherproof it … it is going to be outside in the elements during the harshest time of year. We also needed to find the right lens, one with a short throw to avoid positioning the projector too far away from the house. Finally, we needed to create a slick and intuitive user interface to help our customers easily create designs.
This is the garage bench where the first prototypes were developed.
Prototype 1 was the initial enclosure with components from other projectors. It worked, but didn't achieve the weatherproof objective.
Prototype 2 was weatherproof, but we had to add a large heat sink to ensure proper heat dissipation.
Our initial mounting consideration was a tripod. However, we realized we needed to go back to the drawing board.
In a further effort to miniaturize the unit, we created an inline version of a projector.
The 3D model was created over a weekend.
We partnered with some of our contacts across the country to get a sample made.
For demonstration purposes, we created a realistic working model of the projector with the camera embedded.
We were dissatisfied with the brightness and decided to find another technology that provides increased brightness. We considered 3LCD and DLPs to achieve the brightness we desired.
January 2017 did side-by-side test with LCD prototypes and a DLP projector … and immediately saw that we needed to switch from LCD to DLP as the base projection system.

- DLP = Unmodified DLP projector
After our side by side comparison, we decided to switch technologies from LCD to DLP. The bad news is DLP is 4x more expensive than LCD. The good news is it is at least 5x brighter than LCD (now that is Siriusly bright) and it gives us the potential for increased functionality in the future with 3D, video, camouflage, and other capabilities.
Next we compared 3LCD to DLP. As you can see in the picture, the 3LCD is brighter and doesn't have a rainbow effect. After this test, we decided to move forward with 3LCD technology.
Our next challenge was to test lenses. We tested many lenses for both clarity and throw ratio as we needed ultra short throw ratio for wide projection at a short distance.
Additionally, we needed help with the interface that customers use to place images. We hired two software engineers to set up the web interface and firmware.
As a team, we’ve advised hundreds of companies over 20+ years and helped them manufacture complex products. We’ve helped design and manufacture innovative consumer products from toys, to beds, to recreational equipment.
Now that we’ve decided to create our own product, we need $950,000 via Kickstarter to scale US manufacturing and bring our innovative product to market ahead of this holiday season.
