Please watch our video above to meet funnyman Edgar Kennedy, fondly remembered today as the bald-headed comedian in countless classic films. But Edgar was also America's first "sitcom" star who played himself in 103 two-reel comedy shorts known as the "Average Man" series produced by RKO Radio Pictures between 1931 and 1948.
Our ultimate goal is to honor Edgar Kennedy's film career by restoring and releasing as many of his RKO comedy shorts as possible. The hi-def digital restorations will be released in an original broadcast and home video series called The Edgar Kennedy Show. Each half-hour EKS episode will showcase one of Edgar's funniest comedy shorts shown in its entirety along with a mini-biography segment drawn from Edgar's 35-year film career working with Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Our Gang, the Marx Bros., the Keystone Kops and in dozens of feature films.
The project goal for this Kickstarter campaign is to fund the Pilot Episode of The Edgar Kennedy Show for consideration by Turner Classic Movies, PBS and other broadcast venues for the series and to secure worldwide video distribution.
Edgar's “slow burn” signature act of frustration is timeless and universal.
You can enjoy dozens of highlights from Edgar's funniest RKO shorts at our "Clip of the Week" page. Sorry, but we can't show any of Thanks Again yet since it currently exists only on 35mm. With your Kickstarter help the sky's the limit for restoring and reissuing all of these comedy gems that have been "lost" for generations.
You can read about Edgar as an original Keystone Kop, his early work with Charlie Chaplin, the creation of the Average Man series that this project is dedicated to and meet Edgar's un-average Family in the series. Much more is found in Bill Cassara's captivating biography "Edgar Kennedy: Master of the Slow Burn" that helped inspire the Edgar Kennedy Restoration Project. Please visit "The Edgar Kennedy Show" on Facebook and "Like" Edgar to receive updates. Also consider leaving a comment and posting a link on your own Facebook page to help spread the word.
Please enjoy the "Slow Burn" theme song for The Edgar Kennedy Show by film and TV composer Charlie Barnett.
If we are able to substantially exceed our Kickstarter funding goal, we will transfer additional Edgar shorts to hi-def and produce a 6-episode first season of The Edgar Kennedy Show. Costs to produce 6 half-hour shows will be diminished by having the set built, the production team in place, the music score and the opening sequence produced for the Pilot. The cost of proper HD digital transfers will remain constant for each short.
This concept for a continuing series of comedy shorts accompanied by mini-biography segments and behind-the-scenes histories can later be applied to the cinematic legacies of other classic film comedians like Charley Chase, Laurel & Hardy, Hal Roach's Our Gang, Leon Errol and Clark & McCullough.
Risks and challenges
While we do have solid contacts in place, our pitch of the Pilot Episode of The Edgar Kennedy Show to Turner Classic Movies and to PBS affiliates ... COULD FAIL. Should that happen, there are numerous other existing and emerging broadcast and webcast platforms as well as direct-to-home video venues we will consider next.
Having a professional pilot in hand will go a long way toward finding a proper home and producing "The Edgar Kennedy Show" series. Whatever the outcome for a continuing series, if we succeed in funding and producing the pilot each supporter will receive our sincere thanks and an opportunity to view the pilot on a private YouTube channel or own it on DVD, along with the other indicated premiums.
