Lately I've been getting into discussions with musician friends of mine, discussions we would never have dreamed of having in years past. They all come down to this question: "Why make a record these days, especially when no one's buying them?"
But the question's not merely rhetorical, it's answerable. People who write songs need to record them, to place them into the world —and for die-hard songwriters, this is going to be the case as long as there are musicians, microphones, recording devices, and especially, people who want to hear the music.
Well, we're hopeful you're one of those kind of people, —a listener and an aficionado, and if you are, we'd love for you to take a look at our campaign and to help support our effort. You see, we're not just looking for you to "fund" our project, but rather to pre-purchase There Is No Calamity and perhaps to pick up some of the special rewards we've got for you as well.
When my cousin, a diamond dealer from Chicago, recently asked what happened to the music business, I said, "Cup your hands under your computer and imagine that all the diamonds you're trying to sell would simply fall into people's hands for free." "That's a problem," is all he had to say. And so it is that I've undertaken my second kickstarter campaign in three years.
I've put a few rough demos here for your perusal. They serve as road maps for us when we're in the studio. This is one called Sacrificial.
There Is No Calamity feels strong to me, as does the great team we've got assembled to make it happen. Scott Tipping on guitar, Matt Thompson on bass, Chuck Lacy on drums, Jeff Victor on keyboards and Steve Berlin, keyboardist and sax player from the band Los Lobos working as producer —not to mention a few surprise guest artists.
This one's called Love is What is What Carries Us
This is called The Depth of You
Here are some of the song titles:
The Depth of You
I Pity You Poor Spirits
Rich Men Run the World
Fear Is Our Undoing
This one is something I can hear being played in a church, it's called Ropes or Wings
Please join us in being a part of the recording of There Is No Calamity.
Wishing you health, happiness, and much success,
