We live incredibly fast-paced lives in our world today, full of item after item created to distract us from the subtleties inherent to our planet. The Ink and Earth Project is one family's effort to make time in their lives to step away from this noise, and create art from what is found in the Quiet.
The Ink and Earth Project:
From March to July of 2015 the Hale family will be dedicating one week at the start of each month to tent camping in 4 southeastern parks and at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. While we are at these places we will take time to explore the environment; its ecosystem, its plants, animals, minerals, the earth, water, and sky. From these observations we will make art, through drawing, words, photos, and tattoos. The creation of this work will continue until September 2015. This is a Project about quieting the noise, to hear the whispers of the Heart and the whispers of the Earth.
These will be the items of our focus towards creation:
- 5 Large Scale Drawings: These will be 24" x 36" ink drawings on archival paper. They will each feature items found only on one individual trip. They will be drawn in my studio, and stained with hand-made walnut ink and mounted to birch panels.
- 5 Large Scale Prints: These will be 24" x 36" high-quality sceenprints on recycled, USA-made paper (French Paper.) Printed by Lady Lazarus in Houston, TX. Limited Edition, Signed, Numbered, and Embossed.
- 10 Monthly Tattoos (50 Tattoos Total): The month following each trip, I will release (via my Newsletter) 10 "Gratitude Tattoos" inspired by that trip -- animals, plants, feathers, whatever inspires me to create.
- 2 Tattoo Sleeves: At the end of the trips (starting in July), I will begin 2 large-scale sleeve projects on 2 backers. These will be collections of items found in the drawings created on the trip and custom-fit to either the arm or the leg.
- 1 Youth Art project: On our last trip to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation we will be doing another art project with the youth there. In conjunction with Conscious Alliance and Stronghold Society, we will guide a group of children and teens through the making of an art piece based on this Project (**more info below.)
- Various Sketches and Writings: While on the trips we will make sketches, take notes, write poems, and take photos that will serve in documenting our experience and as reference for continuing the work at home.
- A Culminating Art Show: In September, there will be an Art Show in Athens, GA, showing the work created on this trip. We will have for display and sale the original drawings and prints from those drawings. We will also have sketches and tattoo designs, and a hand-made scrap book from each trip. If there is enough backing I will try to have a book made in time for the show collecting many of these items in print form.

I was raised with the idea that when you are given much, you give much back as well. I have made this part of my life and my art, and now it is part of our family as well. Through this project we will be giving back 10% of ALL the earnings to CONSCIOUS ALLIANCE. This will include all the Kickstarter funds, original works, prints, tattoos, and any other sales generated by this Project. Please watch this video to get a better idea about Conscious Alliance and the previous youth project I did at Pine Ridge:
The last stop on our trip will be by far the furthest, we will visit the Pine Ridge Indian Reservations in South Dakota. We will be doing a Youth Art Workshop with Conscious Alliance and Stronghold Society, leading a group in creating a work of art similar to the Ink and Earth Pieces from this project. After spending a few days collecting inspiration of our own, we will lead the group on a nature walk to collect materials from the land and take time to notice what we see in the environment. From these items and items offered as further inspiration, they will be asked to make a drawing of what inspires them from their very landscape. We will give them materials that they can take home with them to continue making art beyond this singular event.
Pine Ridge is a place of extreme economic poverty, but also a place of Spiritual and Environmental wealth, and a spiritual culture built around the Sacredness of the Land. This workshop will help give the youth eyes to see the wealth of artistic inspiration that surrounds them, and the hope that resides in this process.

We need your help! To make this project possible it requires some extensive collaboration. Part of this collaboration is with you! This Kickstarter represents an energetic exchange, and part of that exchange is monetary. You have the ability to offer us support financially, for our living expenses over the next 6 months, and the costs incurred by this project itself. This will be the entire focus of my work for the next 6 months, and thus the means by which my family is fed and sheltered. In return we can offer the things we create, the art that is made is valuable and the prayers, visions, and divine beauty that create these works are priceless. In order for this collaboration to be abundant and fruitful it requires not only financial support, but energetic and spiritual support from people like you. We appreciate every dollar that is offered, and we also appreciate every good thought, prayer, and every pair of eyes that takes the time to look at these works. Thanks so much, we are so very grateful!
Special thanks to Austin Taylor and David Goehring for the incredible video!
And, to RISING APPALACHIA, for letting us use their beautiful song, "Swoon" as auditory background for the first half of the video!
Finally, to Isaac of Lady Lazarus Press for the phenomenal print work!

Risks and challenges
This is a very large project and has unique challenges. The challenges are largely logistical in nature (making sure everything can happen within the schedule allowed). There always can be delays in this; from illness to car troubles, there is the possibility that everything "won't go as planned." We are an adaptable family, and we understand plans must be as well. We have left an extra week of each month free of schedule (when I would be making art) so if we need to shift camping excursions or art making time we have that flexibility.
We also have the challenge of getting all of the backer items out on schedule. I am lucky to have a team of amazing helpers in this. I have a wonderful business and scheduling assistant, and an awesome shipping assistant as well. We will all work together to make sure everyone receives their rewards as quickly as possible!
I trust that we will adjust and create with the challenges as this is inherent in the creative process. I hope everyone will be flexible and patient as well. We are a very small scale operation, and we keep it that way so we can do very art-driven projects. We truly appreciate your support, and it goes a long way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
