Narrated from a point of view not often heard from, this book humanizes an issue so widely discussed in the news, but from the perspective of outsiders, journalists, observers. Too often the individuals living through this tragedy are recognized as anonymous numbers, graphs, or maps.
Adam an individual, a son, a brother, a lover who is living through this very real world and can never return to his homeland. Told by someone who's lived this and tenaciously persevering, this story needs to be told, needs to be shared, needs to be heard.
We're so close we can almost taste it! Less than $500 to go to make this dream become a reality. We are so grateful to all our backers and keeping our fingers crossed that we can raise the remaining funds before the deadline in less than 6 days.
As a thank you to our backers for helping us get to this point, we've recorded a reading of Chapter 1 that you can listen to here:
For the last couple of years I’ve been drafting my debut novel, An Ishmael of Syria. It’s a contemporary historical fiction about a young Syrian man who is haunted by his past as he tries to find a home. It’s also about struggling against odds that we all might face. It’s less about surmounting his struggle and more about his journey. Based on my first-hand experiences, the story follows Adam across Syria, Lebanon, and Malaysia between 1989 and 2015.
With the refugee crisis and the Syrian conflict at the center of international affairs, Adam, an exiled young Syrian, struggles to find a home while questioning the very existence of such a concept. Between Adam’s experiences and his progressive take on controversial issues, it becomes rapidly clear that he has sipped his share of bitter tragedies. In his efforts to keep a clear conscience amid ISIL’s occupation of his hometown and with the burden of attending to his family’s needs, Adam may rise to the challenge, but at what cost?
An Ishmael of Syria is already written. For months my partner, Sharon, and I have worked on this text to ensure the best possible delivery of the story. Now we need to get the book professionally edited, so we can proceed to publish and promote it. The funds raised through Kickstarter will go towards getting the book professionally edited, getting the book into print, and spreading the word. With your help, this dream can become a reality.
Risks and challenges
The book is already written; the next steps after fundraising are:
- Engage the editor: We have several quotes so far and a preferred option, but we are continuing to explore all our options.
- The process of editing: This is both the content and the structure; the quotes indicate 1-2 months for completion.
- Formatting the e-book: Our plan is to release the e-book version first, hence why the e-book rewards have earlier ship dates. We then plan to print physical copies and due to the time required to print and ship have factored in additional time for these rewards.
We feel that the timeline and ship dates we’ve chosen will allow us the time we need, plus a bit of buffer to be able to send out rewards. Our goal is to get this book out so people can explore the multitude of challenges that comes with living in exile and having to watch your country and people as they struggle to survive.
We want to get this book out and get it out in its best form. This is our first foray into self-publishing, so it’s a learning process for us as well. We are committed to making this book a reality and will work to quickly resolve any issues that arise along this process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
