MONSTERS is my fourth album of what I call "experimental folk" songs. It's about people who are monsters, or have been turned into monsters, or think they are monsters, or are haunted by monsters.
OK that's not exactly party music. But then neither was my first album, RESTORE, a metaphoric journey through AIDS, let alone my last, which featured the love-and-masochism exploration LOVE SONG FOR JEFFREY DAHMER.
So yeah, I never really expected mainstream support.
At least, not anymore than people like Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen or the other emotionally adventurous artists who always excited ME. But I sure bought their records. And I figured the same emotionally adventurous people who listened to them might value what I was doing.
(And lately you have: I got the Outmusic Award for my last album, and then last fall two of the new songs were honored by the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest)
Now, after a long, fifteen months in the studio - the most creative and pleasurable recording process of my life - the new album is mixed and mastered. And now it just needs to get released and publicized.
You are my best record company. A record company of risk-taking hearts and ears! You are the only "mainstream" I really ever cared to reach.
I've got a tightly budgeted campaign ready to roll -- but if enough of you go for this music and the other rewards I'm offering, I can expand and extend the tour dates and the PR campaign that will help more risk-taking ears discover what I have to offer them.
And all you really have to do to join the cause -- is enjoy the album!
All my love (seriously, folks) -- Dudley
