About

The Whys

As an artist of any stripe could tell you, I write because it is what I love to do, first and foremost.  However, all artists want to see their work enjoyed.  As an author, that means getting my works out there to be seen and read by the masses.  In today's flooded independent publishing market, that's a hard thing to achieve.  That is the reason for this Kickstarter: to provide funds to make my works more accessible, more eye-catching to the casual browser, and to improved the quality of those works for maximum enjoyment.  Before we go too deep into what exactly the funds will be spent on and why, let's first look at the books that your money will help create.

The Books

The Push Chronicles are three books: Indomitable (the first edition of which is already published, the second edition finishing editing), Indefatigable (written and editing), and Incorruptible (writing will commence next month).  The books tell the story, from the first person perspective, of Irene Roman, a researcher and scientist, who finds her world turned upside down when an event happens that literally changes reality all around her, an event that she is one of the only people privy to.  Forced to deal with betrayal, a growing sense of responsibility, and a world suddenly filled with superhumans, Irene struggles to find a way to fix what she believes is broken or at the least find a way to make peace with this new reality.  The Push Chronicles are a blend of superhero literature, urban fantasy, and action/adventure, and has more than enough creative potential to extend beyond the currently planned three books.  You can check out the complete second edition of Indomitable for free at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/472199

Three Seconds to Legend also is a trilogy: The Opening Bell (the first edition is published, soon to be updated to a second edition), The Tale of the Tape (writing done, editing underway), and The Twelfth Labor (written alongside Incorruptible).  The series deals with the world of professional wrestling made real and the story of some of the wrestlers in it.  Inspired by both real world pro wrestling, various martial arts films and games, and a touch of Greek mythology, we follow the journey of a rookie, Leilana Ito, and a twenty year veteran, Dana Harding, and the strange twist both of their lives take after encountering each other in a small Oklahoma wrestling promotion.  Family struggles, decades-old feuds, love, romance, and corporate machinations mix freely with their in-ring struggles, leading to grander and grander stages.  Three Seconds to Legend is a wild mix of martial arts epic, pro wrestling fandom, with a dab of retelling mythology.   You can check out the complete second edition of The Opening Bell for free at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/476160

The Whats

Now, the nitty gritty.  What are your Kickstarter dollars paying for?

Three things, primarily.  First, your money will be funding entirely new art from the excellent artist Felipe de Barros (http://fpbarros.daportfolio.com/).  Why is good cover art so important to book sales?  It is every book's first impression.  Especially in the world of online books, that one thumbnail image in the middle of a book search can be a make it or break it moment, either attracting a click or forcing it away.

Second, Kickstarter funds will be put towards acquiring space at upcoming Pensacola conventions, as well as paying for physical stock and booth art for live appearances.  While online sales are excellent and my primary focus, the fact of the matter is that the larger your fanbase, the better.  Between stock at local independent bookstores, representation in local author's societies (which often require physical book representation), and simple word-of-mouth among convention goers, this step is vital to the spread of my works and the success of the project.

Lastly, some of the funds will be put towards costs of advertising and publicity.  Though I am seeking to do most of my promotion through free social media and other services, there will undoubtedly be need at times to pay for greater exposure or to pay for professional assistance on the promotional front.  I, like many writers, am horrible at selling myself so there will always be some need of help on this front.

Risks and challenges

There are two primary risks when looking at this series of books and their success in the independent book market.

The first one is purely derived from me, the author, and that is the will and drive to continue to produce quality literature. Four of the six currently planned books are done, so there are two remaining to write. I consider this risk to be a minimal one, as I have already gotten four books down. There is plenty of momentum and creative spark left for two more. Maybe more!

The second risk is the commercial risk all independent authors face: the saturation of the indie market. There are hundreds of thousands of books available on Smashwords and even more on Amazon.com, so it is no mean feat to make one's work, no matter the quality, stand out in the crowd.

That is the main reason for using the majority of the Kickstarter funds for art purposes and for the print and distribution of copies in the local bookstore and convention scene. One of those approaches increases the immediate appeal of the books in the online stores and the other begins to build a reputation among potential fans and customers. Even if a physical copy doesn't sell at the venue, it still puts the name out there and can encourage further research and sales.

If publicity continues to be an issue, there are professional services that can be employed to expand the books' image in a variety of media. Those services, though, are weapons of last resort. Not only are they costly (eating into other initiatives) but many services require the handing over of access to social media and publishing accounts. This is something I personally wish to avoid, something I think any creator or artist out there reading this could sympathize with.
