Boy : une anthologie arrangée et séquencée d’annonces presse parues dans le magazine Playboy US de 1960 à 2003,
par Sarah Vadé.

Un essai visuel de genre décrivant l’univers visuel masculin de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle siècle à partir d’un magazine constitué à 50 % de publicités. Un exercice de montage chronologique et plastique de ce qui a pu constituer le charme visuel moderne hétérosexuel. Un essai anthropologique et sociologique des représentations normatives du désir et de l’idéal de vie du consommateur masculin de la fin du XXe.

800 pages de publicités de charme à l’adresse des hommes du XXe siècle en 400 pages éditées et arrangées par une jeune femme du XXIe siècle.

Boy: an anthology of selected commercial ads published within the US Playboy from 1960 to 2003, edited and arranged by author Sarah Vadé.

A gender kind of visual essay built out of a magazine half composed by commercial ads. An exercise in montage and collage, both chronological and visual, of a material that may have constituted the modern heterosexual charm. An anthropological and sociological commentary on the normative representations of desire and the masculine consumer’s ideal of life at the end of the 20th century.

800 pages of glamour advertising aimed at the 20th century male, patiently converted by a 21st century young woman into a 400 pages publication.

Le budget : la somme demandée considère l'impression et les différents frais logistiques liés au projet soit 7000 euros. (impression : 6400 €, frais divers : 600 €)

The object: a sofcover magazine 20.5 x 27 cm, 400 pages, perfect binding, CMYK, on glossy paper 80 gr.

Edited and signed foot fetishy glamour postcards, based on genuine collages made out from photographs of US Playboy’s most beautiful playmates of the month.

Un tote bag frappé des slogans les plus accrocheurs des publicités Playboy US de la fin du XXe siècle.

A typographical tote bag screenprinted with the late 20th century’s most appealing and catchiest headlines taken from the US Playboy.

Fondée en 2013, Tombolo Presses est une jeune maison d’édition liée à la revue en ligne T-o-m-b-o-l-o et à sa sensibilité aux affinités et aux contradictions de la pratique et de la réflexion du graphisme. Cette association de loi 1901 veut porter les projets éditoriaux, curatoriaux, événementiels, liés à l’énergie des graphistes, théoriciens, étudiants et enseignants actifs sur la plate-forme d’échange théorique, pratique et pédagogique de la revue T-o-m-b-o-l-o. L’ambition de cette structure est notamment de proposer des publications expérimentales et/ou transitives dans le champ d’un graphisme étendu à l’ensemble des arts de l’image comme texte et du texte comme image.

Tombolo Presses est fière de soutenir le projet initié lors de son Master en Design graphique, à l'Ensba Lyon, par Sarah Vadé. Une mise en page comme une forme de théorie visuelle, critique et sensuelle.

Founded in 2013, the publishing house Tombolo Presses is itself connected to the online review T-o-m-b-o-l-o. Both share a peculiar sensibility for the contradictions and affinities triggered by the practice of, and the reflection on graphic design. Tombolo Presses is an association constituted in accordance with the French Law of 1901 concerning non-profit organizations. It aims to support editorial, curatorial and event-oriented projects tied to the dynamic work of the graphic designers, theoreticians, historians, students and teachers present on the online review T-o-m-b-o-l-o, a platform of pedagogical, practical and theoretical conversations. Tombolo Presses’ ambition is, amongst others, to offer experimental and transient publications within the field of graphic design and its expansion to the visual spheres of text as image, and image as text.

The publishing house Tombolo Presses is proud to support the work of recent Ensba Lyon graduate (Dpt of Graphic Design MA) Sarah Vadé, and to follow up on her critical, sensual and visual approach to the contents of the US Playboy.
