About

ETA: We have a video for Romeo and Juliet!  Check it out and show your friends.  We'd love to be able to come to your school.

:::Now back to your regularly scheduled project information:::

Hello!  Welcome to the Kickstarter page for the 2015-2016 Season of Bare Bones Shakespeare!  I'm glad you're here!

In fact, I'm so glad that even if you only pledge a dollar to my project, I'll give you a ticket to a preview performance of Romeo and Juliet.  That's right.  Back my project for the minimum amount and you get to see a play.

Why?

Long story short, I'm proud of my project and I love you for contributing.  I want everyone who contributes to be able to see at least one of our shows.

What shows, you ask?

Our first production will be a one-hour cut of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.  With its super-minimalist production design and a cast of just five awesome actors, this production is perfect to take into schools.  Without a lot of technical requirements, we can adapt easily to each individual environment.  Without big costumes and sets, we can focus on what's really important to us: the language, the characters, the story, and the sense of community that permeates this play.  This production is designed to be high-energy, fun, and accessible to students of all ages.

The Dallas-Fort Worth based actors and I will swoop in, do the play, and swoop back out again, or stick around and teach some awesome workshops if that's what you want.  Right now we're planning three workshops that will interconnect with the production: one on staged combat, one on the text, and one on the dances we use in our production.

The initial goal of $20,000 only covers basic costs, such as paying our actors and collaborators, setting up boring things like tax IDs and insurance so the schools will allow us to come in, and buying sturdy, simple equipment that will last through loading in and loading out at a variety of locations.  To really be able to pay the actors and collaborators what they're worth, and to cover more office-type costs to make us a viable company, we'll need more.  Also, if we get over $20,000, we'll be able to plan more productions and employ more artists in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.  To that end, check out our stretch goals:

$20,000: Hooray, our Romeo and Juliet production will be officially funded at this level! To celebrate, I will release a backers-only video of me doing a speech from Shakespeare as a rap.

$21,000: My cast and I will participate in the exciting twitter phenomenon of substituting a certain word into lines from Shakespeare.  We will release backers-only videos of us doing dramatic readings of these altered lines and speeches (caution: you probably don't want to watch these videos at work or in front of impressionable children, or easily offended individuals of any age.  Also, anyone with a heart condition might suffer from excessive laughing.)

$22,000: Bare Bones Shakespeare will produce a Pay-What-You-Will staged reading of Double Falsehood, an early modern play of debatable authorship.  A key component of this staged reading will be a food drive to benefit one of the North Texas area food banks just in time for Thanksgiving. Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating.

$24,000: We'll be able to make posters for Romeo and Juliet!  We'll also add poster-based backer rewards and upgrade some of the existing rewards so you can get your hands on this limited item.

$25,000: Bare Bones Shakespeare will produce a Ren-style production of William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.  Ren-style means that there's no director, no designer, less than two weeks of rehearsals, and the actors only receive their own lines instead of the whole script.  Sounds crazy, but every theatre company in England used to mount plays like this.  Hey, if it was good enough for Shakespeare's company, it's good enough for us. Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating.

$26,000: We'll add new early bird backer options so you can see the other shows we're putting on.

$30,000: Bare Bones Shakespeare will produce a Pay-What-You-Will staged reading of The Tamer Tamed, John Fletcher's response to William Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew.  That's right. Fletcher did fan fiction before it was cool. Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating.

$35,000: Bare Bones Shakespeare will produce a reverse-gender production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth.  Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating.

:::ETA: New stills available from our Macbeth video!  This play is going to be awesome:::

$40,000: Bare Bones Shakespeare will produce a Pay-What-You-Will staged reading of A Woman Killed With Kindness by Shakespeare's contemporary, Thomas Heywood. Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating.

$45,000: We'll be able to make t-shirts!  T-shirts will be available as add-ons to existing backer rewards, or individually in a brand new backer level.

$50,000: We'll add a second educational touring show: a 5-actor, 1 hour cut of Julius Caesar to take to DFW-area schools. Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating at the preview performances.  We'll also add new backer rewards so that schools and other venues can bring Romeo and Juliet AND Julius Caesar to their location. If you know anyone who would rather not teach these plays to their students, let us come in and teach them instead!

$55,000: The actors will release a hilarious dubsmash video for each production.

$60,000: Bare Bones Shakespeare will produce a second Ren-style show: William Shakespeare's Two Noble Kinsmen. Backers will get reserved tickets and preferred seating.

With all of our productions, we'll have special backers-only performances and receptions.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Risks and challenges

I'm working hard to give my individual collaborators incentives to follow through on their obligations, but sometimes there are personal problems or other circumstances that we can't foresee. Sometimes someone has to drop out of a project, in which case I can audition a replacement and in the meantime I will serve as understudy for the actor in question. We will work hard not to cancel shows, workshops, and skype sessions, but in the event that we have to cancel we will be in communication with the backers as soon as possible to set up an alternative time.

I've researched the costs carefully, but sometimes there are unforeseen costs that may delay the completion of backer rewards. I will keep the backers up-to-date on any setbacks and make sure that the backers still get fun, exciting electronic rewards while they're waiting for any physical rewards.

My qualifications include a BA in Drama from Texas Woman's University, as well as a Master of Letters and a Master of Fine Arts in Shakespeare and Performance from Mary Baldwin College. Both during my education and since graduating, I have taken advantage of numerous opportunities to learn about financial and artistic collaboration and company management hands-on. I teach college English at Mountain View College and I have been the director for The Colony's Shakespeare In The Park for two years.
