About this project
Greetings friendly faces of Kickstarter. :) We’re Lewis Jordan and Jason Smith and we’d like to introduce you to SCAVENGER; a project we’ve been working on for the better part of the last four years. A Nouveaux-Gothic chamber piece; minimal characters for maximum effect. Not quite a horror and yet not quite a thriller.
At its most superficial level, ‘Scavenger’; as the title suggests, is about a scavenger hunt; a scavenger hunt with almost other-worldly origins
The ‘Freya box’, the central object of our story with an odd; almost supernatural past requests an item, in return for an incredibly addictive; but brief experience known as ‘enlightenment’; pitting two players against each other and pushing them to the very limits of their sanity.
As the game progresses, the requests grow increasingly vampiric in nature; the pursuit of which draws the worst side out of our characters.
We won’t beat about the bush with this; Addiction is an issue that’s dealt with in some form by billions around the globe, and when the supernatural elements are boiled down from the story; our tale becomes a horrifically plausible reflection on how destructive a force this can be; • What it does to families, • To individuals, • And in the worst cases, how it can bend otherwise wonderful people into monsters, just looking for their next fix…
…at any cost.
Recently Lucinda Rhodes and her fabulous production company Hawken-Rhodes have joined our team and have been instrumental in securing an award-wining cast and crew. More on those wonderful chaps in a moment.
The story has been crafted with a very claustrophobic feel in mind, primarily set in one location; harking back to the almost drawing-room feel that the early universal horror films had.
The central setting of the tale; a new home that, at the beginning of our story, represents a place of comfort, security and newfound stability to our central character after he endured a hard breakup, along with our Freya Box; draws a life-force of its own, leaching the life and sanity from everyone within; almost becoming a character in its own right.
The further drawn into his own madness by the forces at work, the more the four walls that once provided a sanctuary start to turn on him
Visually the film draws heavily from the German-Expressionist movement of the 20s/30s. Think along the lines of: • The Hands of Orlac; • The Man Who Laughs • and The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.
Pacing-wise, this is not another fast-and-furious style horror that’s been inundating cinema for the last decade or so; this film is more of a creeping; slow-burn; akin to • The Exorcist; • The Shinning; • or to a lesser-extent The Omen.
It’s an unsettling tone. Most unsettling of all, despite your better judgment you’ll find yourself sympathising with our players even as their actions towards each other become increasingly vile.
