Millions of people around the world suffer from deformities to the ear and nose due to birth defects (e.g. microtia), resections due to cancer, and trauma (including military combat wounds and dog bites). We imagine a world where we can easily treat severe facial deformities anywhere and in a cost-effective manner.
Facial structures are the features that are noted in the first few seconds of human interaction. Defects of these areas can leave people mutilated both physically and psychologically. Simple social interactions like dating, or even leaving the house can become an insurmountable burden for these patients.
While reconstructive surgery is rarely life-saving, it is almost always life-changing.
The current methods used for reconstruction are primitive; they require hours of manual carving of rib cartilage to create frameworks for the ear and nose and have not changed in over 2 decades. These surgeries are extremely expensive and can be done by few surgeons worldwide. Most people, especially in underprivileged parts of the world, are not able to travel to them or afford medical care. Being in the medical field and seeing this need first hand, we invented AuryzoN.
AuryzoN is essentially a cookie cutter for cartilage that allows creation of cartilagineous frameworks for the ear and nose in minutes and anywhere in the world, including underprivileged areas. It uses cartilage taken from the patient’s ribs and is manually operated, not requiring any electricity. AuryzoN works by using pre-fabricated cassettes that cut cartilage in one simple motion into precise shapes and sizes needed to build the ear/nose frameworks. These cassettes are standardized to common ear/nose shapes and sizes to cover as much of our diversity as possible.
Most importantly, AuryzoN achieves consistently excellent results, without the need for a trained reconstructive surgeon: any surgeon capable of removing rib cartilage can build an ear or nose with this device, thus making this surgery easier to perform in medical missions worldwide.
Our mission now is to develop a high-precision, metal prototype that we can test in laboratories and hospitals here. Ultimately, our goal is to bring our product to the world and launch our humanitarian mission of not only bringing the device to underprivileged countries, but also teach local surgeons on how to use it and provide them with the tools to change lives.
How can you help?
Our campaign follows the ‘pay it forward’ model, derived from the selfless custom of paying for an extra cup of coffee to allow those less fortunate to receive a free beverage. Following this, although you will not personally receive an AuryzoN device, donating to our project will bring this revolutionary device to patients across the world, most importantly in underprivileged countries.
Your contribution will help us develop working prototypes that can be tested and refined for use worldwide, and also help us build the core humanitarian mission of our company.
Join us in our mission to change lives across the world, one ear at a time.
Risks and challenges
This project, while we hope for it to succeed to the highest degree, comes with risks. As a medical device, AuryzoN will require stringent testing and refinements before the final product can be used. Such research and development will incur substantial costs. Similar medical devices can cost a minimum of $250,000 to bring to the market using traditional development streams. We have been able to reduce these costs by working with independent contractors, rather than large design firms, and conducting product testing on our own.
Our device will also require FDA regulatory approval. We aim to keep our device classified as Class I, meaning it is low-risk and derivative of existing technologies. Since all medical devices must receive this approval prior to clinical use in the United States, we will work in conjunction with experienced consultants and attorneys once AuryzoN has completed the R&D phases to ensure its navigation through this regulatory process.
We plan to bring new members onto our diverse team to help with the many steps required to achieve our ultimate humanitarian goals. This is an exciting journey for us all and we are excited to share it with you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
