NEW: Dieter Rams documentary

Greetings friends, hope you're all well. I wanted you to be the first to know about a new film I've started that I'm announcing today! RAMS is the first feature documentary on legendary designer Dieter Rams.

The objects Dieter has designed have touched the lives of millions of people––so many of us have had a Braun coffeemaker, shaver, stereo, calculator, speakers, or alarm clock. Or an Oral-B toothbrush. Or a Vitsoe 606 shelving system. Or any of the hundreds of other products Dieter has designed or overseen the design of.

In 2008, I had the honor of interviewing Dieter Rams for my film Objectified, but I was only able to share a small piece of his story. Dieter, who is now 84, is a very private person; however, I have been granted unprecedented and exclusive access to Dieter for this documentary about his life and work.

RAMS will include in-depth conversations with Dieter, and detail the process behind some of his most iconic designs. We want to get past the legend, and get into his philosophy, process, inspirations, and even his regrets.

I've just launched a Kickstarter campaign two minutes ago for the film, with some incredible, exclusive rewards including posters and limited edition prints designed by our good friend (and massive Rams fan) Michael C. Place of Build, books signed by Dieter himself, a tour of the Vitsoe factory, new and vintage objects from Vitsoe and Braun, and much more. This Kickstarter campaign will fund the film and also help to preserve Dieter's incredible design archive for the future.

I hope you'll join me in making this film and follow along as we complete it.

Cheers! Gary

A new film: Workplace -- and a new Kickstarter for a Helvetica poster reprint

Greetings Urbanized backers, it's been a while! Hope you've all been well. I've got two pieces of news for you. I'm excited to tell you about a new film I'm working on for the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. Workplace is a documentary about the future of the office. It looks at the thinking, innovation, and experimentation involved in trying to create the next evolution of what the office could be.

The film follows the design and construction of the New York headquarters of digital agency R/GA (in collaboration with architects Foster + Partners) who have been experimenting for the past 18 months with how physical and digital space can better interact. Digital technology has radically changed how and where most of us work, but the physical spaces we work in haven’t kept up with that transformation.

Hundreds of millions of human beings spend billions of hours in offices every day (you might be sitting in one as you read this). How can we make them better places for people to work and collaborate? What's the next wave of digital tools to connect the office, the city, and the planet? And do we even need offices anymore?

Workplace will premiere at the Biennale, where it will be screening daily from May 28 to November 27. I'll be posting more details about the film and its cast soon, and we're planning a really unique screening experience at our exhibition in Venice. There will be special screenings in other cities this summer, along with a global internet release. Follow me on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to watch as we finish the film.

And in other news: after seven years of being out of print, we've just launched a Kickstarter campaign a few minutes ago to reprint the original Helvetica "Meet the Cast" film poster, designed by Experimental Jetset. We're also printing a slightly smaller limited-edition letterpressed version.

If you're one of the people who's emailed me over the past seven years wondering when we'd reprint it, here's your chance to get one. If enough people want one of these posters, we'll reprint 'em!

Thanks as always for your continued support, it really means a lot to me.

Cheers! Gary
