About this project
What is "The Value Of Freedom?"
This project is a documentary about the importance of Freedom. It will examine freedom from political, economic, philosophical, and spiritual angles. The primary message that we are trying to communicate in the film is that true freedom is the opportunity to experience the natural results of your own decisions. Many people, especially in the younger generation, view freedom as the right to do whatever they want without consequences. Arguably, this is actually the opposite of true freedom, because if we minimize the consequences of our decisions, we can’t affect our position in life or determine our own outcomes.
The film will also examine the intrinsic costs of freedom, and we intend to make the case that freedom is more important than life itself. Whether you look at a veteran’s cemetery or read “give me liberty or give me death,” it is apparent that this used to be a clear cut issue in the US. There is much attention given to the question of how we should be securing and promoting freedom in the US, but those arguments fall on deaf ears if we do not first convince people of why we should secure and promote freedom. Our team has already started production, and you can see samples of what we have shot so far. More details are available on our production website.
Who is the Film For?
Our target audience is people 18-30, but the film will be relevant to anyone of any age. The film will be based on a Christian worldview perspective of why freedom is important, but the ideas it is defending will still be applicable to non-Christians. It won’t avoid controversial issues, and will attempt to address them in a way that is not inflammatory. This will allow us to better engage with those who may not initially agree with the message we are presenting. We intend for the film to be a tool to share a message with people who may not agree with us, and to illustrate to them that even small steps made in the wrong direction, are still the wrong direction.
How will we get it to Viewers?
Most of our potential viewers will see the finished product online, from streaming services like Vimeo and Amazon. We will also create DVD and Blu-Ray discs to sell, because that is an easier way for some people to share the film with others in a physical way, and some people don’t have broadband access. Even though we want it viewed by as many people as possible, we are not going to just stream it for free, because making things free tends to lower the value that people hold for them. We do intend to invite organizations to sponsor online screenings, which will be free to viewers for limited time periods, as this is an effective way to encourage people to view the film. But it will always be streamed free to any of our Kickstarter backers since they will have already contributed to the production process.
How will the Money be Used?
There are hard costs to making any film. I will not be taking a paycheck for the work I am investing in this, because I believe in the value of what I am doing, but there are many expenses to cover. We need to travel for the production, and we currently intend to interview people and shoot in Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and possibly Texas. There may be other locations as well if further opportunities emerge as the production moves forward. After shooting, post-production on any serious film involves a lot of tools and skills. I will be doing much of the editing myself, but other aspects like music and motion graphics work will be shared with others. There are other marketing and distribution costs, like disc replication, and even this Kickstarter campaign, which costs us a percentage of the proceeds.
Why get Involved?
This Kickstarter campaign is to raise money to cover those costs, and to generate support from a community of people who want to see freedom promoted. Connect with like-minded supporters on our Facebook page. There are many people out there who are not happy with the direction things seem to be headed, but are not sure what to do about it. Many people give to political campaigns, hoping that new leadership will change the direction we are going. While that is not necessarily a bad idea, we need to change more than just our leaders. We need to change how our fellow citizens view freedom versus giving control of their lives to the government. The purpose of this film is to convey to people why they should value their freedom and take deliberate action to protect it. If you believe that is an important message to promote, please consider financially supporting this project, not just for the rewards we are offering, but because of the impact it can have.
About the Rewards
There are some great rewards available if you help us fund this production. We deliberately have made the digital copies of the film very accessible, and there are a variety of options for you to receive physical copies. Many of those rewards include multiple copies of the film to encourage you to share the film with others around you. Higher levels of support are where you see not only your contributions having an effect, but you may see your input influencing the final product as well.
If 100 people were able to pledge as Major Contributors at the $250 level, we would surpass our goal with no other assistance. As a Major Contributor, you get permanent online access to the film as well as the full set of disc copies available at the lower levels of support. You will also get access to full length interview footage online, and we will have a special place for you in the end credits of the film.
How can you Help?
Even if you can’t afford to give financially, you can support us by liking our Facebook page, and sharing this campaign with as many other people as possible to spread the word. The more money we can raise, the better the final product will be, and the more people will see our film and hear its message. If you too believe in The Value Of Freedom, your support is needed. Please join us to promote The Value Of Freedom across the country and around the world.
Risks and challenges
Making a film is a tremendous undertaking, and things rarely go according to schedule. I have set a target date of October 2016 because of the presidential election. While the film is not about the election, the concepts of freedom and government intrusion are being focused on during this election cycle. And the election is drawing more attention than ever before, so it is ideal to be able to share a film highlighting The Value Of Freedom during that time frame. The film will still be relevant and marketable past that point, but that is the optimal time for an initial release.
All Kickstarter projects are all or nothing. If the minimum funding goal is not met, none of the contributors are charged. That would end this project, not just due to lack of funding, but because it would indicate that the market for this project is not as strong as expected. If the project gets funded, I WILL complete the film. It is only a matter of how soon and how polished it is. The more money we can raise, the more people I can get involved, the faster the project will be completed, and the more effective the final product will be. Any money we raise beyond the initial thresholds will be put towards involving more people in the post-production process. The more artists we can have working on motion graphics, music, audio mixing, and other steps in the process, the better the resulting film will be.
If I have to do all of that myself, it will happen, but it may take longer. As opposed to failure, time is the biggest risk to this project. October is a very aggressive goal, but there will be many benefits to releasing it in that time frame.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
