Wizard School is like normal school, except it's a card game where you have to carefully manage your abilities and resources to make sure that you don't flunk out of the most prosaic magical academy in all the world.

Wizard School is a cooperative card game in which 2-5 players take turns at passing tests, besting monsters in the most epic group project of all time. And yes, you are graded cumulatively. When one of you fails, you all flunk out.

Difficulty and length of games can be managed by choosing from among 20 different graduation cards, which helps ensure that each game is a new experience.

Your goal may be to graduate, but you can’t let the monsters overrun the school. As they pile up, you’re forced to use your magic just to stay alive, and you may have nothing left to pass the Graduation Milestones. If you reach an F (on the Graduation Card), it’s Game Over.

Wizard School was created by Hank Green and Eric Johns, and illustrated by Karen Hallion. We wanted to build something that brings together the stuff we love most into a cooperative game that we love playing. Wizard School is our first game release, and we need your help.

Do you believe the Scorpelican has no place in modern education? Do you want friends like Ghost Janitors that love to clean up and Baristas who always know your order? Us too. And we'd like you to help DFTBA Games and Wizard School pop into existence.

This is your letter, it's now up to you to decide whether you'll be attending Wizard School.

When you open a box containing wizard school, you will find (this image is updated to include all stretch goals achieved by our wonderful backers!):

And inside our Kickstarter-special, not really all that safe for kids  expansion "Hank's Dirty Little Secrets" you will find quite a few things that you will not find on a store shelf. These are all the cards that Hank wrote, and then made Karen draw, but really could not be put into the core game. A fair number of references to Hank's actual high school experience, which we wouldn't call racy, but we wouldn't call tame either. At the moment this expansion consists of 30 cards (11 magical cards, 11 school cards, and 8 graduation cards), but we're hoping/planning to increase that number as our campaign grows!

The monster box is hand made by our friend from Abbots Hollow Studios (here is his awesome etsy store). They're all unique, so don't expect yours to look exactly like this, and every one will be signed by Hank.

The hardwood wand is also custom made and hand-crafted.

And for our $500 backers, in thanks for the huge role you're playing in getting this thing going, you get to work with Hank, Eric, and Karen to design something to add to the game. That could be a new student, or monster, an item, or graduation card. When we all agree on what this something is, Karen will draw it up, and you will be the first to see it before it gets put on a card and sent to every one of our backers.

Back in 2010, Eric kinda...borrowed Hank's intellectual property to create the Evil Baby Orphanage card game, which has gone on to sell tens of thousands of copies. Hank, as a life-long lover of tabletop games wanted more, so together they have decided to jump (wand first) into Wizard School as the very first game developed by DFTBA Games.

They asked some of their favorite artists if they wanted to be involved, but did not initially ask Karen Hallion because of how she's far too talented and busy to work on something like this. But, oh, they were wrong. Karen dove right in and their weekly meetings have found her playing an advisory role as well as an artist role, which has been extremely welcome.

Over the last six months, development has taken over our lives, but when what's taking over your life is a game about Wizard School, it's not so bad.

Help Us Help You

Wizard School won’t become a reality if strong, independent-minded, fun-loving, lovers of the inane, like you, don’t step forward to say, “I need a wand, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.” (By the way, if enough of you post your videos saying that on youtube, we’ll add a cool extra for every backer. More info on that when we reveal stretch goals!)

Kickstarter is the best way to get that wand into your hands. The best way to ensure that Harvey the Ghost Janitor has students to assist for the next hundred years. It allows us to build the wizarding community, a great game, and DFTBA Games all at the same time.

Oh yeah. So glad you asked that. You didn’t really think that we were just a one-and-done kinda company? We’re planning on creating a bunch of of fun games, not just this one.

Our second game, Created by Robert Burke, is called ROLF! It's a party game for only you and your quick-witted, intelligent friends. This fast-paced improvisational card game has everyone come up with new endings to classical phrases. The quickest and best wins. That’s it. Super simple, but ridiculously fun.

We've got a third game in development as well, a more classical board-game style adventure that takes place in ancient Rome. But that's a ways in the future.

I mean, we don't want to brag but between us we've created seven business, two online stores, and a dozen successful games (OK...all of the games were Eric's.) We've manufactured nearly everything you could think to print (including, of course, games). Basically, we bring a lot of experience to this project and are very confident we know how to design, print, and distribute this game for you.

As proof, I will now distribute a bunny to you:

Risks and challenges

We have done everything in our power to minimize the risks to our wonderful Kickstarter backers. We have already designed the game and are just doing testing and balancing now, and we have already self funded the artwork. All that is left is to get this thing made, which is where you come in! Of course a factory could run off with our payment, or a boat carrying our games could get engulfed by a giant (probably magical) squid, but we have existing relationships with every manufacturer and logistics company we're planning to use.
