The Bad News And The Very Good News

Posted by Avi (Creator)

Hello Everyone,

These past few days I have to admit I was surprised by the drastic increase in positive support from real backers and fans who want to see the project succeed. The positivity stemming from these folks has really made a world of difference and has helped immensely. It has also helped to drown out the naysayers and doubters who have contributed nothing but negativity and proved to Nintendo fans don't want a sequel for SMRPG. For the bad news first. I received a call today from a member from Nintendo and was asked to stop the Kickstarter campaign. I had high hopes and am extremely disappointed I was asked to stop the campaign as I feel I have let fans and backers down that have been supportive up to this point. My thoughts about Nintendo being an evil empire started to resonate through my mind, however, I also received some very good news as our conversation did not end there. I was not told this call was confidential so I feel it's appropriate to share what was discussed. I was asked to share my thoughts on a sequel to Super Mario RPG with this member of Nintendo. I was also informed that a part of the reason a sequel wasn't made was because of the fallout with Square, however, I was also very surprised to hear Nintendo did not gauge that demand from its fans was strong enough to make a sequel. We briefly discussed Paper Mario and how it captured some of the original themes of SMRPG which made the game successful but there was a mutual understanding this was in no way intended to be a sequel. Lastly, I was thanked for my contribution as a Nintendo fan and for promoting the idea of this project and doing so in a positive and open manner. One of the problems I was made aware of that many people may not know is that volunteer projects such as AM2R and Pokemon Prism were actually planned to be sold behind Nintendo's back and so this is why Nintendo has been shutting down so many projects down and appears to be a jerk but really they are just protecting their intellectual property. It was expressed they were grateful I did this openly and was not sneaky in any way and brought this idea to their attention. Though this Kickstarter has stopped it is a victory for all of us that we have been heard and there is a very real possibility for a sequel!

So in other words, you didn't learn anything, and all the advice you got was completely wasted.

Shame about what happened, but I’m glad you got a positive out of this. This doesn’t stop you from creating a spiritual successor of sorts if you follow the advice given to you :)
