WHAT ANOTHER SKATEBOARD DOC? HARDLY!
Well, I hope we got your attention, especially those that have felt in someway the thrills, spills, and emotions of this unique sub-culture.
Skateboarding isn’t a fad or a toy. It has become a part of the youth culture not only in the US, but it's ingrained worldwide. Now over 60 years old, there is a solid second and currently third generation of skateboarders. With the help of my good friend of 40 years, having worked together on many projects, Stacy Peralta has pledged to come on board as an Executive Producer. All this is dependent on getting the funding so we can tell another impactful story from skateboarding’s legendary past.

Reaching Out New Videos

So we are reaching out for support from those that have been touched by skateboarding. In some way, we want all skateboarders, past, present, and even future to be part of this important film documentary project. We welcome all with a desire to be part of our skateboarding family.
When Stacy was making “Bones Brigade an Autobiography”, I was able to help with footage collected since I started shooting skateboarding in the early eighties. I had thought about this project since Stacy made his highly regarded “Dogtown and the Z-boys”, released in 2002. During my time with Stacy, making the Bones Brigade film, he urged me to get on with it... "Don, make this film!"
It’s now time for “BADLANDS, an off the wall skateboard story”.

The goal is simple. Tell the important and inside stories from those who lived them. We start with the early days that set up how the skateboarding culture grew in this rustic region 50 miles inland from Dogtown and in the shadow of the spiritual leader, the highest peak known as Mt. Baldy.
Baldy Dam was built in 1956 as protection from a devastating flood like the one that occurred during “The Flood of 1938”. In order to control the water, 16 feet of circular splendor cut through the earthen dam in the form of a concrete "Pipe", spilling out into several miles of a concrete drainage ditch known as “The Line”.

By the 70’s with the adaption of urethane wheels, skateboarding took a rebirth of youthful energy, well documented in “Dogtown and the Z Boyz”. We pick up with the skate scene that evolved far from the beach, and surfing’s influences, this was the BADLANDS.

The Baldy Pipe became a not-so-secret skateboarding spot where the adventure of sneaking into a restricted area, fit the DNA of the skateboarding culture. Was it the adrenalin rush of the Pipe, or that nagging feeling of, "when would you be busted", that drew skaters from all over, to make homage to this mecca of the Badlands? More often than not, both.
For our story, the birth of the Pipeline Skatepark was to bring light to the radical skateboarding being done in restricted, often illegal enclaves. Now we would expose skateboarding to the public, and the world. We explore the stories of how the Pipeline affected the lives of a swath of youth that found the individual achievement gained through skateboarding. They were not the ball and bat type, as they wanted freedom from the grown-ups telling them how to do sports. You see, these were the “1st Gen Skateboarders”, as their parents had no experience with this form of skating.

So, a large part of the Film will deal with how the Pipeline Skatepark became a focal point in the history of skateboarding and the culture that arose. We’ll see the creation of this world-renowned structure, it’s impact on the sport, and through it’s final destruction in 1989. We will talk with all those that the Pipeline affected, the best of the best during the 13-year lifespan. All the legends will be covered, from the Alba’s, Chris Miller, Tay Hunt, and other locals. In addition to Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, McGill and the rest of the Bones Brigade, even the Z-Boys that were challenged by the extreme vertical terrain.
Not left out will look at the birth of BMX vert bowl riding, with the likes of Eddie Fiola, Mike Domingues, and Brian Blyther.

The real heart of the Badlands story is how it affected those that spent time growing up in this unique place, which influenced the men and women they would become. As all things must end, we will see the final day’s of the Pipeline Skatepark as it’s bulldozed leaving only memories of skate days gone by. These memories now only captured from the extensive pictures and many skateboard videos of the day.
Our last and most ambitious goal is to bring from the original COMBI-POOL ashes, the rebirth of, ”COMBI 2”. Yes like the rise of the Phoenix, we will rebuild this historic skateboarding structure. The re-building of the Combi pool will depend on additional funding through Sponsors and/or Crowd Funding aside from this project.

WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING YOU ASK?
We have several areas that need to be funded to make this a top notch film project. Below is a list that breaks down where the funding will go. Fortunately we own many of the tools to make a documentary of this scope. We still need additional funding to help with other expenses.

The biggest expense will be the music rights that we hope to bring to the film. Licensing music is an expensive challenge to get all the music from the day. We hope to be able to at least secure a few of the best you'll all recognize. Any extra money will go to the re-building of the COMBI POOL.
OUR LATEST WORK
We were successful in 2014 with our Kickstarter funded feature documentary, "PENTON:The John Penton Story". Working as producer as well as wearing many other hats, I joined with producer-writer-director Todd Huffman creating this well-received feature documentary that was in theaters with over 100 screenings with Gathr Films. “We have already had conversations with Gathr about taking on BADLANDS and they are excited to see more, and hopefully exceed what they did with "Penton".

Risiken und Herausforderungen
With a successful Kickstarter feature documentary, “PENTON: The John Penton Story”, which was funded, and has been released, our risks level has dropped significantly. We now understand what it takes to make a kickstarter campaign successful and how to follow through and get the documentary completed. I think with the team we have and it's resources, we have minimized our risk level.
Can things go wrong? In production, things can always go wrong, however 40 years of doing this I've made at least every mistake once and I think I've learned some lessons. With that said, we may have issues getting to all the people we hope to interview due to scheduling conflicts. This may cause delays and change of directions if needed.
I think the biggest challenge we will face is to really get personal with the interviewees. I need them to lay it all out so we can get more than the facts...we get the emotions. Also, the rebuilding of the Combi pool is subject to additional funding and might not make it into this film but we have opportunities to secure corporate sponsors for this and any other shortcomings or surprises that may unfold during production. The music for the film, while very exciting to get to use period music from the era could put us on hold sometimes as artists, records labels, agents and attorney's lack of sense-of-urgency or appreciation for "indie budgets" could slow the post-production process.
