I am a solo progressive metal musician from London. I am about to release my debut album entitled CURVE - a record written, recorded and produced entirely by myself. I want to make the album release something special, for me and for everyone who has shown me love and I aim to do this by creating an excellent physical release, some new merchandise, and offering an exciting release experience. I've just released a 2-track single in conjunction with got-djent.com, listen to it here.
The art was created by A Curious Bestiary - Art by Kaitlin Beckett, especially for CURVE.
The reality is, small bands struggle for money. By struggle, we mean 'don't make any'. Doing things as a solo artist makes funding things close to impossible. Music is my art, and I give it away for free. Merchandise and a physical release are ways to enhance my music and get it out to people - that's why I like doing it, and Miroist can become bigger and better through it. However, though I can make music at home, merchandise has initial costs that are prohibitively expensive for a guy on his own. I am unable to afford the initial merch costs - I need you.
I have put together the backer options you see on the right. You will get something from each of these that you will only be able to get as a Kickstarter backer - from getting your name in the liner notes, to gaining access to an exclusive Google Hangout album listening session 2 days before the album is released! With the exception of the 'T-Shirt Only' and 'Vinyl Only' offers, all bundles are incremental - you get everything that came before too!
So what are my plans, and how much will they cost me?
The short answer - a total of £1500 ($2460) to press 100 vinyls (with incredible artwork), and 100 t-shirts in 2 different designs.
The longer answer -
I think CDs are dead. I don't think they provide an interesting album-consumption experience - they don't give much of a platform for artwork, and they aren't particularly portable. I think vinyls remain the only viable physical release - they are niche purchases, but they are awesome niche purchases. When I saw Kaitlin's artwork for CURVE, I absolutely knew it was made for vinyl. I knew I could offer a really good vinyl purchase with artwork like this.
However.. wow is vinyl expensive. Few places do lower than 250 vinyls - and lets face it, I won't sell that many. But I have found a supplier who will do 100 pressings, and including artwork, it will cost £948 ($1556).
T-shirts are much more affordable. I will print 50 of the M-logo design (see the section 'T-shirt designs!' below), which will cost £195 ($320). I will also print a CURVE artwork T-shirt, but this will require a full-colour print, which costs £350 ($574) for 50.
I have shopped around and though, yes, there are slightly cheaper options, I have chosen suppliers who are reputable, I have used before, and chose quality of the final product as the most important factor.
Why Kickstarter, and why a target of £1100?
I believe that a Kickstarter campaign is the best way for me to deliver you guys an awesome release experience. But, it's all-or-nothing. If I don't make the funding target, I do not receive any funding at all.
The funding figure of £1100 ($1806) is based on a target of £1000 and the fees Kickstarter and processing will take. With your help this figure is totally achievable, and will enable me to deliver my planned merchandise by going broke and paying for the rest of it myself. It's possible to make more than this target though, so please do back more if you wish - all proceeds go directly to the cost of merchandising and shipping and awesomeness for your fellow fans.
Risks and challenges
Any other costs I encounter I will cover myself. I envisage that production of the vinyls will take about two month from the release of the album. T-shirts will be < 1 month. All items will be shipped together. If there are any further delays I will keep you posted.
I am doing everything myself and I am trying to make things that are worthy of the effort I put into my music.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
