Sara and Dan started Cheese On Bread as a joke in 2002. Five years later, what began as a silly acoustic duo had expanded into a six-piece rock band that toured Europe and the U.S., released two full-length albums and was regularly headlining massive dance parties in NYC. But just as we were hitting our stride, circumstances forced us apart. Sara and Kevin moved to Los Angeles, Daoud moved to D.C., Dibs moved to Oakland, and Dan and Matt stayed behind in Brooklyn. For years, we’ve found every opportunity to play a show here and a show there, all while Dan was filling up notebook after notebook with new songs.
Finally, nearly a decade later, we are reuniting to record a full album! And we need your help to make it happen!
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?!
We can offer you bouncy rock anthems about silly feelings! Time Out New York once called our songs, “sassy, bloglike rants” back when blogs still existed. Our new tunes still teeter on the highwire between snark and sob, but with a few grey hairs: What does it mean to get older and wiser, but still regularly feel like a petulant, insecure teenager? You will literally NEVER find out unless you help us make this album!
WHERE WILL YOUR MONEY GO?!
In addition to the standard costs of studio time, mixing and mastering, we need to pay for transportation to get the whole band onto one coast. On top of that, we now have A BAAAABY and so we have added CHILDCARE to our band spreadsheet, just below hotel room window replacement and coke JUST KIDDING WE ARE HONESTLY VERY CHILL. Seriously we just want to make a rock album without bursting any very tiny eardrums. Awwwww. Scroll down if you want to see our budget!
WHAT DON’T WE NEED MONEY FOR?
We may be older but we’re still punks! We don’t need money for lodging (couches are fine!), fancy studio musicians (that’s us!) or a publicist (we ALL have email accounts!)!
WHAT WILL YOU GET IN RETURN?!
Mostly? You get to live in a world where we made a new album! We promise this world will be better than the world we live in now! But, to spice up the deal, we have an array of perks, most of which feature an AVALANCHE of digital music from our coffers, along with some pretty sweet threads.
WHAT IF WE *SURPASS* OUR GOAL?!
If you all show up like superheroes for this fundraiser, and we make more money than we’ve asked for, then all proceeds will go to make a music video!
WHEN IS THIS ALL GOING DOWN?!
We’re converging in NYC this July, and we intend to mix and master later in the year for a 2017 release!
We are very emotional about this! Our band reached its peak in the years between Napster and YouTube. As a MySpace band, we can easily vanish into the poorly-archived chaos of the Internet, but this would erase the very real impact we had on our community and our fans -- an impact we are really proud of. We need to make this record -- not just because we are literally bursting with these songs and we’re afraid we might rupture something if we don’t get them out -- but because we want our music to persist in the present. Since we all live in different cities, we may never again get to experience the joy of constantly playing our music to smiling people, but if we can put these new songs on tape, then our music can travel to the places we can’t, and the band we love can still live on, despite the distance, after all these years.
Recording Studio + Engineer: $3800 (This will buy us a week in a rad Brooklyn studio with a groovy engineer!)
Mixing & Mastering: $2800 (This is so the album sounds okay!)
Advanced Costs: $2000 (In order to arrange these songs, we all had to get to the same place! Last year, we all got together for a week of arranging and recording! This money covers our travel and recording expenses!)
Rehearsal Studio: $500 (We live in different cities, so we need a few days to rehearse together and get back into shape!)
Transportation: $600 (Because distance must be traversed!)
Childcare: $500 (Because making an album with a baby in the room sounds like a hilarious movie and a very bad idea!)
Kickstarter Fees: $1000 (Kickstarter takes a percentage of our fundraiser, so this ensures that we can pay them and still have enough to cover our budget!)
CHEESE ON BREAD IS (in alphabetical order): Dan Fishback, Matthew Keesan, Kevin Kelly, Sara Kelly and Daoud Tyler-Ameen. (And our at-large member Dibson T. Hoffweiler!)
VIDEO EDITING: Sean Puglisi
Risks and challenges
Someone could get sick!
Challenges? We’ve already conquered the biggest challenges! Despite living in three different cities on two different coasts, we managed to get in the same room for a whole week to arrange fourteen songs! Then we figured out a way to make a demo together! Then we made this super sweet Kickstarter video! We have spent hours and hours and hours on Google Hangout talking logistics through spotty internet connections! We confirmed studio time and travel plans so that we could record the record in July! If we can accomplish all of this, with all of the odds stacked against us, we can do anything!!!
The biggest challenge now is just getting the funding! Help us out and share it with friends!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
