The Indie Chicks Project: Let's Get Independent Authors Some Festival Booth Time!
We're Lisa Caskey and Melissa Koberlein...and we're the Indie Chicks!
We believe in Indie Publishing...and helping Authors achieve Self-Publishing Success!
Lisa: We met at the Indie Author Pavilion at the Tucson Festival of Books in 2016; our 2-hour book-selling time-slots were back to back.
Melissa approached me, we exchanged information, and briefly discussed sharing a booth at the festival the following year.
Little did I know, it would be the first stepping stone to a flourishing partnership and friendship.
Melissa: Aww, that's sweet. :)
A few months later we connected and decided to carry out our plan! We registered for a booth (I 🖤 YA), and began making our plans.
We were so excited! The Indie Author Pavilion was a good start, but with an entire booth to ourselves for two whole days, we knew we could sell a lot more books and meet so many more fans!
Lisa: Fast-forward to the festival...
Boy were we spot on! Not only did the overall foot traffic and exposure to our books increase, our sales did too...by a whopping 400%.
Sounds great, right?
The problem is that these booth spaces are expensive and most Independent Authors simply can't afford them. When you add marketing and travel costs into the mix, it's hard to be profitable.
Melissa: It's difficult for independent, self-published authors to get adequate representation at book festivals. Most of these events are influenced and organized by traditional publishing houses, traditionally published authors, and/or bookstores stocking traditionally published books.
The Tucson Festival of Books has done a wonderful job of helping Self-Published Authors get started. The Independent Author Pavilion is an incredible way for Indie Authors to get their feet wet experiencing a festival.
Lisa: But it simply isn't enough. The Pavilion only provides Indie Authors with booth space for 2 hours. How many books can you possibly sell in such a small amount of time?
Melissa: Introducing the Indie Chicks Project, an opportunity for Indies to sell more of their books and meet more of their fans at this year's upcoming Tucson Festival of Books.
Lisa: We are hoping to raise money to buy a bigger booth at this year's festival...and we want to share it, free of charge, with Self-Published Authors who want a little more than the Indie Author Pavilion (but who aren't quite ready to branch out on their own).
Melissa: Your support will directly help jumpstart the careers of Independent Authors! A bigger booth will allow us to give 16-32 authors an additional 2-4 hours of book selling and fan "face time".
Lisa: Our mission is to help Indie Authors achieve Publishing success! Your donation will give these authors the chance they need!
Melissa: Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to consider our Kickstarter Campaign! We, and Independent Authors everywhere, thank you!
Risks and challenges
Scheduling and space pose the biggest challenges - we want to ensure the Indie Authors we support receive adequate booth time! Lisa has experience with Operations and Logistics and will hone those skills to maximize the space and perfect the schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
