About this project
The Aranware Pottery Collection was conceived for the Irish Diaspora across the world who are passionate about their Irish roots and who celebrate all that is Truly Irish – a love of life, the people, nature and good living
Rather than produce Aranware overseas I want to maintain my original vision of celebrating hand crafted, heritage- inspired collections that support the history of Ireland and is made by artisans in Ireland and thereby supporting our local economy.
Aranware is made from warm cream colored earthenware that is safe for use in the Oven, Microwave, Freezer & Dishwasher. The embossed designs reflect the Celebrated Aran knit stitches, which symbolize Irish Life of old.
The Diamond design for example is often said to represent success and wealth.
A limited range of Aranware pieces has sold in US stores.
Customers noted the sturdiness of the pottery. The neutral cream allowed them to mix & match with more colorful tableware pieces. They also noted how the pieces worked for all occasions and how much they enjoyed displaying the pieces in their home and how the designs highlighted Irish craftsmanship.
Unfortunately Ireland in recent years has lost much of its manufacturing base. Maintaining or growing the production of Aranware has proven difficult. However this is a hurdle I am determined to overcome. I have resisted offers to have the Collection made overseas and my goal is to keep Aranware Irish Made, expand the Collection to include Dinner Plates, mugs, bowls, platters, creamer & sugar, salt & pepper sets, storage jars, vases.... develop new Aranware colors and introduce new Tableware designs, currently on the drawing board, that will honor Ireland's History & Culture.
Trellis design on the Dinner Plate has come to represent the small enclosed fields dotted along the west coast of Ireland
The Side Plate has the Cable design believed to bring Good Luck & Safety
Ladder of Life on the Small Bowl symbolizes the human struggle and climb to eternal happiness.
The Link design on the Aranware Mug symbolizes the eternal link with those who left the homeland to sail away to lands afar.
Our Individual Teapot is embossed with the Honeycomb & Double Zig Zag design known as the "marriage lines" symbolic of the Ups & Downs of married life .
Our handmade individual Aran Tea Cozy with the Moss & Blackberry Stitches represents an abundant and fruitful way of life.
The neutral cream color of Aranware is classic and will allow the table settings to be used for all occasions. However we will also glaze in different colors so the Aranware table settings can be mixed and matched for a more colorful table. Color's will include Turf Brown, Fisherman's Blue, Honeycomb and Ireland's Green.
I also will aim to Incorporate the work of people who turn the things of the land - wood, sand, stone, metal, clay - into art thus exporting an Irish flair to homes all over the world. In a world of mass produced and predictable designs Irish artisans, design, weave, sculpt, craft, mould, paint......old techniques passed down through many generations producing heirloom pieces that are unique and authentic, inspired by Ireland and a joy to celebrate in your home with family and friends.
Our manufacturing base will be in my home City of Derry in the North West of Ireland, a City that has come through a troubled past to become a City with a new story to tell - one that will bring new opportunities and prosperity to its people. Our distribution base will be in Boston, my home for past 20 years
Funds raised through Kickstarter will be used to get our tableware moulds made and get our industrial kilns up and running and also be used for specialized machinery and spray glazing equipment to get the ware produced.
We will reach our customers through retail stores across the US, and develop an Online curated marketplace for creative products from Ireland. This will empower artisans and designers to thrive online and connect with the Irish Diaspora around the world. Our aim will be to produce well designed products that will compliment American lifestyle and be affordable to our Irish Diaspora. Our Collections will be durable, yet practical with timeless designs that inspire casual yet elegant living.
We need your support to produce Irish Tableware and bring authentic Irish Crafts inspired by Ireland into your home.
Risks and challenges
When the first pieces of Aranware were produced at the now closed factory in Derry, numerous technical issues had been overcome. This expertise is available as we embark upon producing the ware from our own workplace. Having a production manager on our team and using my own four years of experience at the factory will give us a head start.
Using our industrial kilns we will produce the ware in bulk in bisque form and glaze upon demand. This will keep production costs under control.
As I sought other possible manufacturers throughout Ireland I was amazed at the products being produced throughout the country. Products rarely seen outside Ireland. As production of Aranware is underway I will seek to design pieces that will be made by these Irish Artisans and add to our product mix.
Initially moving Aranware from the drawing board into real products was a difficult process. I do not under estimate the challenges ahead but feel confident I, and my team in Derry can overcome them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
