About this project
"Part of the Plan" -- a New American Jukebox Musical – an original story scored with the music and lyrics by the late singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg. The book, written by Kate Atkinson & Karen Harris, tells the tale of an adopted boy and the teenaged girl of privilege who is forced to give him up. "Part of the Plan" takes us through the boom times of post-World War II America, the social and sexual revolution of the 1960’s, and the political upheaval of the 1970’s.
"Part of the Plan" is a passion project for Fogelberg Fans, lovers of musical theatre, and the community at large -- and those who would be thrilled to see this project come to life as a unique way to tell a powerful story and help keep the legacy of Dan Fogelberg alive. New generations of DanFans await us.
We are working with world-reknowned, Grammy award-winning composer, arranger and musical director, Victor Vanacore, to arrange Dan's music for the stage. Since Victor first arranged Leader of the Band for a project when he was a student at the Berklee College of Music, he has gone on to work with icons including Elton John, Willie Nelson, and the late, great Ray Charles, with whom he won a Grammy for arranging "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," Ray's Duet with Johnny Mathis. See Victor working with Ray Charles, Willy Nelson, and Michael McDonald by clicking here.
Dan's widow, Jean Fogelberg, a talented musician and extraordinary artist in her own right, has been part of this project from the beginning, and we are honored to be collaborating with her on every element of our journey. As a gift to our Kickstarter contributors, Jean is designing very special artwork (see the reward section of our campaign), which will also be featured on our playbill.
We have been forturnate to have Broadway Producers, Choreographers, Directors, and Theatre Owners on both coasts lending guidance, encouragement, and wisdom. At this point, they are waiting to see Part of the Plan on its feet, in a STAGED READING and FULLY-PRODUCED WORKSHOP, so that they can get on board for the next phase.
To accomplish these critical goals, we need YOU. For $50,000, we can accomplish our STAGED READING (scheduled for early October) followed by a WORKSHOP (right after the first of the year). We would have the music arranged, hire the actors, bring in a director and choreographer, and rent a theatre or space for the rehearsals and performances. Our job would be to rewrite and polish the show during and after each of these phases. The momentum we are already gathering has the power to make this campaign successful beyond our wildest dreams.
The beauty of Kickstarter (and all of you) is that we can raise funds beyond our $50,000 immediate needs. Between Broadway babies, musical theatre lovers, and Dan Fans around the world, we have the potential to raise considerably more -- enough money to enable us to approach a major regional theatre to partner with on a FIRST CLASS PRODUCTION. This would be a huge step toward Broadway.
Our passion for "Part of the Plan" lies in bringing our story and Dan Fogelberg's music into a powerful and emotional theatrical experience. For those who may not know his work, those who may have forgotten Dan's artistry, and to the die-hard fans who long to hear his music in all forms, we hope you will recognize how special this project is and help us make it a reality. Thanks and...

Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges of putting on a Staged Reading and Workshop are negligible. Kate and Karen have already found wonderful actors and singers, directors, choreographers, and theatres in which to launch our project. It's only a matter of selecting WHICH people and WHAT space to use for our endeavor. That can be challenging, in selecting the right people to work with , but both of the creators are well-experienced in casting and crewing up film and television projects. This combined experience lends itself well to accomplishing the goals of "Part of the Plan" and Kate and Karen are fully prepared to meet any and all challenges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
