In Urbanization, by Johnny Ebsen, players are city planners who oversee the development of a rural area from the beginning of the industrial revolution to the modern era; taking their humble farming villages and growing them into prospering cities, attracting citizens and businesses through expansion. Expansion is kept tight for 2 to 4 players with an adaptable board.

Players start each round by drafting a special character. These characters provide a benefit that is exclusive only to them.

In the Action Phase (repeated 4 times), each player performs one action from a choice of 8. Players can purchase land, erect buildings, trade grain, plant fields, receive work orders, attract industry, produce goods, or collect taxes. At any point during 1 of their 4 actions, players may use their special character to help themselves. This character is then discarded, but don’t worry, you’ll be able to draft another at the beginning of the next turn

Players grow their population to gain victory points, but they must be able to feed them with available grain, have space to house them, and also provide them with work to do. The population level is determined by the lowest level of housing, grain stores, or work orders on the player mat.

Factories are acquired once the work orders for it have been filled. The player must have available space to build a factory or they’ll have to upgrade an existing factory. These factories are used to to produce goods to earn money and gain victory points.

All of this adds up to a tense game with tough decisions, where you have much to do and little time to achieve it. Do you take the large population path to victory and will you be able to provide for your citizens? Or do you follow a more industrial path and attract business to your city?
