WHAT IS LIGHTS...CAMERA...JUNGLE! ?
Have you ever thought about what it might be like to audition for a movie or television show? Or maybe your dreams went straight to the notion of already having the part, and seeing yourself basking in the glow of your Hollywood success? I’m pretty sure we all have, and that’s the backdrop of this new comic book series from me and Jen. More on us later!
Lights…Camera…Jungle! is a brand new title from the creative minds of Big Dog Ink’s lead writer, Tom Hutchison and BDI’s lead character designer, Jenevieve Broomall. It’s a story of Hollywood dreams, as well as their road blocks, wrapped in the warm, tortilla shell of the campy and over the top world of the jungle girl. Red carpets meet green jungles and the king of the beasts not only roams the plains but also has three hours a day set aside for napping. It’s in his contract, after all.
Golden Age adventure! Silver age action! Modern day drama! Laura McAllan will experience them all on her way to Hollywood stardom…or maybe just on her way back to waitressing at the Nice Rack rib joint.
Lights…Camera…Jungle! isn’t just your average comic book. It’s a huge, 48 page, fun filled adventure through the jungles of both Hollywood and the dark continent of Africa! It also includes interviews with the three main cast members, Laura, Sabine and Jacob, as they talk exclusively to reporter Heather Miles of Tin Foil Hat. The covers you see as rewards are exclusive to this Kickstarter and will not be printed again, so don’t miss your chance to get a little piece of BDI history!
Lights…Camera…Jungle! has as diverse a cast of characters as there ever has been in a comic book! From the jungle girls AND boys (you’re welcome ladies) in front of the camera, to the finicky directors and producers who are in charge of this low budget television show based on a comic book from the 1940’s. Who’s dating who? How did HE get that part? Who put HER in charge? And where’s the lion? We need him on set! Oh and did we mention the leopard skin costumes? Zebra too.
No animals were harmed in the creation of this jungle based comic book, though. In fact, the animals were all handled with tender loving care, especially when the director got a little too loud.
TOM HUTCHISON (ME! Co-creator, co-writer, art director for LCJ!) is the co-founder of Big Dog Ink comics and the writer/creator of the fan favorite comic book series Penny for Your Soul, Critter, Legend of Oz: The Wicked West, Ursa Minor, Joan of Arc and more! Tom is a lifelong comic book reader and collector and now comic book creator and publisher.
JENEVIEVE BROOMALL (co-creator, co-writer, character designer, interior artist) has been working with Tom for nearly five years. Jen has drawn covers for every book BDI has released and has also worked for IDW, Devil’s Due, Aspen, Lady Death and more! She is a world class character designer and is now venturing into the world of sequential art!
CECI da la CRUZ (colorist: covers and interiors) has become a mainstay for BDI projects due to her incredible talent as well as her unmatched work ethic! She has colored covers and interiors for Ursa Minor, Critter, Legend of Oz: the Wicked West for BDI and has worked on books like Lady Death for Brian Pulido and Coffin Comics among others!
HDE (letterer) has been a regular letterer for BDI for years. His unique balloons and captions have graced the pages of Ursa Minor, Legend of Oz: The Wicked West, Critter and more! He has also worked for IDW among others.
KEL NUTTALL (logo designer) has designed the cover logos for many of BDI’s titles including Joan of Arc, Ursa Minor and even a project for next year! Shhhh!
SAMANTHA SAWYER is one of BDI’s new pups! This is her first ever cover for us and she is responsible for the entire piece, from lines to colors! Thomas the lion and Tee-Na seem to have become fast friends on set!
SHANNON MAER has worked on every title BDI has produced and his work can be seen not only in the comic book world, but also in Las Vegas on slot machines! His stunning portrayals of BDI heroines continues with this amazing between shots look at Tee-Na!
RYAN KINCAID is also new to BDI, and this is his first ever cover for us but he has had work published by Zenescope and Action Lab! Ryan is joined by colorist Whitney Cook, and we get to see the playful side of jungle living with Tee-Na and Jossa enjoying a day with the birds!
ROB “Sketchcraft” DUENAS has been instrumental in the building of Big Dog Ink’s look through both character design and logo and graphic design. He is responsible for many of the Legend of Oz: The Wicked West character designs as well as Cupid from Joan of Arc. Rob has done an incredible homage to the classic Spider-Man 300 cover but with that special jungle girl flair!
NATALI SANDERS burst onto the scene with BDI and Ursa Minor four years ago. Her covers have been seen on Penny for Your Soul and Shahrazad as well as work for Zenescope and has been working on her own creator owned projects! Natali takes our ladies down the red carpet on her very unique and glamorous cover.
WHO’S DRAWING THIS BOOK AGAIN?
Jen Broomall has been a cover artist for years, but has only had her hand in the sequential cookie jar once, to date. Her work on the Critter Annual story was wonderful, but this will be her first go at doing the complete interiors for a comic book! And let’s just say she’s knocking it out of the park!

WHY KICKSTARTER? AND WHY NOW?
Fairly simple answer: Freedom to create. This is a project that has been on my mind for years. I’ve been itching to get it going since Jen and I first discussed it back in 2014. But with life, babies and assorted acts of God slowing things down, I finally decided to join this growing community of comic book creators and fans alike and get this brand new project underway. Life is too short to wait for the right moment for everything. I’ve learned that the hard way, as I lost a very good friend the week before we launched this campaign. Jen and I are dedicating this book, this story and ourselves to Eric Hoffman’s memory. He was a BDI family member and a true lover of the comic book medium. I owe him a great deal, and continuing to create is exactly what he would have wanted from us.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
Right where it needs to go. Towards the creation of this book. The artists, colorists, letters, designers and, of course, the printer. It also includes things like shipping supplies and taxes and the like. Any profits will be put towards book two, which we hope to be able to get set for next spring! Yes, you’re not only helping to fund this book, but also help turn it into a series!
While the books offered in this campaign are called rewards, think of it more as simply pre-ordering what you want to receive. You’re buying these special, limited edition items and you’ll receive them as soon as the book lands in our hands from the printer. We are estimating a November shipping date, barring any unforeseen setbacks on production. All domestic orders receive FREE SHIPPING! Check the shipping costs if you’re outside the U.S.
We will be adding bonus items as the campaign rolls along. Once the book is funded, we will start to announce our stretch goals which will include some very unique art prints and a VERY special "item" should we double our initial goal. Trust me, you want to see this happen, so be sure to spread the word and share the link for the campaign across your social media sites! Let’s put a dent in the comic book universe!

Risks and challenges
The risks involved in this particular project are minimal. The script is written, Jen is working on pages, Ceci is coloring and HDE is lettering. The book is underway and WILL be completed. We are aiming for a November shipping period, and that is the only, semi-possible “risk”. Artists get sick, printers make mistakes, and acts of God occasionally delay our ability to get a book into your hands. But rest assured, Lights…Camera…Jungle! will be finished!
