Dazzeler - Lighting up Sexual Assault
Dazzeler fires a intense flashing and blinding light to interrupt sexual harassment or to escape sexual assault. Self-Defense Safety
Flash repellent is a temporarily blinding strobe light. The Dazzeler is used to disorient/interrupt street harassment or assist in escaping from an assault. The effect is similar to having a series of flash bulbs hitting someone in the eyes.
Over the past few years we have examined existing self defence products and reviewed all advantages and limitations. We knew that any bright light, but especially a strobe light would temporarily stun someone without actual pain of long term visual effects. It became obvious that the light needed to be bright enough to function close up at normal indoor light levels. We determined that a 3 watt high efficiency LED light source would provide the light level needed yet fit into the small format required.
I have been disgusted by the amount of sexual harassment of women in public places where, except in the workplace, there are no legal regulations. . Before an actual assault occurs there are very limited legal self-defence options for a woman except trying to leave the situation. Even where pepper spray is legal it is difficult to use successfully and cannot be used against simple verbal harassment or a blocked path. Pepper spray is commonly recommended but has legal limitations as do other weapons designed to inflict physical pain.
I feel that in addition to finding means of educating young men about the need to respect women's physical and emotional rights, that women should have better defensive tools and not just awareness of potential hazardous situations. Your support for this Dazzeler strobe is important to show that this device can be useful and stimulate production and marketing of similar products.
MAKE THEM GO AWAY or GETAWAY YOURSELF
FLASH AND DASH
I have been working with a few gifted associates to design a tool that is useful in interrupting or stopping completely a sexual harassment in public transit systems or other indoor public spaces. It can also assist in getting away from threatening night time situations.
Over the past year we have examined existing self defense products and reviewed advantages and limitations. We found that any bright light, but especially a strobe light would temporarily stun someone without causing pain or long term visual effects. Flash blindness is caused by bleaching (oversaturation) of the retinal pigment. As the pigment returns to normal, so too does sight. In daylight the eye's pupil constricts, thus reducing the amount of light entering after a flash. At night, the dark-adapted pupil is wide open so flash blindness has a greater effect and lasts longer. It became obvious that the light needed to be bright enough to function close up at normal indoor light levels. The retina does not contain pain receptors but obviously flash blinding causes disorientation and increased stress levels.
We agreed that the strobe light source had to be activated with a simple and instant switch with no possibility of error. The switch on the Dazzler is big and on the top where a forefinger can rest and one push for on and second push for off.
We realized that the beam had to be wide enough to easily keep it on the face of the harasser or attacker, unlike the very narrow beam from existing tactical flashlights.
We incorporated a wrist strap with a break away junction so that the strobe light can be easily fastened to a back pack or other equipment and quickly snapped off when needed.
In the evening this device could be used to shine a strobe light on someone blocking your path and in low light levels they will simply not be able to keep their eyes on you. Inside a building or public transit bus or train if you are being harassed, verbally abused or touched simply hold the light a foot away. Triggering the strobe will certainly get the attention of that individual and point him out to others. The couple of seconds of disorientation and visual limitations make it easier to move away.
We have had a couple of functional prototypes assembled and necessary circuit board changes have been specified. This advanced planning and investment will hopefully permit a short pre-production shake down run to meet our delivery estimates.
You can, of course, use the Dazzeler as a wide angle flashlight. When held out in front or above your eye level the flashing strobe is rather odd and a bit annoying but certainly does not limit your own vision.

These specifications are from our prototype pre-production model and
will change ONLY IF we can IMPROVE performance.
We do have a choice of colors but narrowed this down to Light Green or Bright RED. We will determine the production color based on votes from our supporters.
Patent: We have been advised that certain elements of this design could qualify for patent protection. This is under evaluation as we really do want this new woman's self defense device to be made widely available.
No restrictions - not considered a weapon like the pepper sprays. Can be used as a response to verbal sexual harassment. Pepper spray or stun guns work by causing physical pain where the strobe light works through disrupting visual processes.
Directive – unlike a loud sonic alarm that is difficult to locate the strobe light is actually directed at and highlights your harasser.
Discrete - Hung on backpack, carried in hand it will not attract attention or look dangerous
Illuminates threat areas, giving you a better view of a potential threat
Animals, in particular dogs have been reported to stop barking and turn away from the strobe. Does not seem to affect cats but they are seldom aggressive anyway.
Storage – with USB rechargeable battery and no sensitivity to temperature it is easy to verify it’s readiness.
Training – As the strobe has no long lasting effects it is easy to enlist a friend to practice on.
A strobe light is very attention getting even in daylight. This makes the Dazzeler useful in finding someone in a large crowd or festival setting. Held above your head and rotated would make it easy for your friends, children or parents to find you. Or wear a funny tall hat or carry a flag!
Bicycle or running at night on roadway without lights is really dangerous, carrying in hand or hanging the Dazzeler on your back would make you highly visible.
Car disabled at night? Strobe could be put in window or even placed on roadway to warn approaching traffic.
Risks and challenges
I have handled several projects of similar magnitude over the past twenty years. Certain pre-production costs have already been covered and quality control will be completed on components and on assembled units before we will ship. Our only possible delay will be if the demand for these Dazzelers is far in excess of our expectations. Even this should not slow us down much as all components have been specified and we have financing in place to cover a production run of 5,000 Dazzelers. We are, of course, always looking for higher power Light output and reliability. The state of art in this field is constantly changing. FOR THE BETTER! Any improvements possible before manufacturing starts will be included.
Our goal is to assist Women's freedom of movement without anxiety over sexual harassment or assault. This is our principle reason for all our efforts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
