#MUSE – the Most Unpredictable Story Ever
What would you like to read in a book? We'll write a novel based on your suggestions: a brand new way of storytelling!
The Most Unpredictable Story Ever
Hi, we are Matteo and Andrea, two Italian creatives. With “#Muse – The Most Unpredictable Story Ever” we will write a novel using Kickstarter not just for the usual material resources – translation, proofreading and print – but for collecting from you, our backers, something even more precious: your ideas!
Using the suggestions you give us, we will create a collective story, that would not otherwise be possible. We are asking you to support us not only financially, but also by sending us ideas in the form of hashtags that we will collect and organize semantically for the progress of the plot, giving life to a revolutionary book, based on CrowdThinking!
From CrowdFunding to CrowdThinking
Kickstarter helps in collecting donations, but what if we wanted to fully take advantage of the possibilities of this new medium in all its potential? Here is our idea: create a crowdsourced story based on elements provided by you. It's a revolutionary method, made possible only by using a platform like Kickstarter.
The goal is to use this new medium to create a new message, true to the world in which we live and a genuine child of our time, by exploring the communication opportunities of our era. We won’t collect simply funds, but ideas!
Homer also was a CrowdThinker
The major works of poetry, having the virtue of representing individuals as a whole, don’t appear to be the product of a single mind, but of society – it is no coincidence that there are doubts over the historical existence of poets like Homer and even Shakespeare. These poets have the ability to give voice to universal works that describe the failures and fortunes of mankind.
From this point of view, the figure of the author plays a different role: not a tyrant who chooses at will what to include on the page, but a collector who gathers every idea from his surroundings and reworks them by telling a story. Our intent is to collect your ideas and rework them: we want to involve as many people as possible in the creative process, in order to obtain an unpredictable, funny and modern result.
In tale we trust
We will use the structure of the fairy tale as the outline to input all of your suggestions.
The fairy tale is one of the most primitive narrative methods. It is very simple in its basic features and at the same time very complex because of the countless possibilities that it can generate. It is the first narration with which we learn about the world as children and which we keep in our imagination throughout our lives.
Its structure can be found in the majority of the stories we are told or watch everyday. Its simple scheme and its protagonists are everywhere, from the Odyssey to The Lord of the Rings, from the Nordic sagas to Disney movies. Moreover, the main features of the fairy tale have been studied, namely in the form of folktale, as a narrative genre, as well as its scheme. Thanks to its basic repetition, the fairy tale scheme has been used by many authors.
For these reasons “#Muse – the Most Unpredictable Story Ever” will be a fairy tale: the story of a hero that, in order to reach or save his true love, will have to struggle against an opponent and overcome difficult challenges relying on his skills and a little help from magical objects. That’s all we can tell you right now, everything else will be decided by you!
A brand new way of storytelling
The method we thought up has been inspired by the collective game “The exquisite corpse”, invented in the surrealist Paris at the beginning of the last century. The game has inspired many famous personalities including Man Ray, Breton and Picasso. The game consists of matching linguistic elements given by different people in order to form unpredictable and creative sentences.
At the end of the campaign, we will ask our backers to send us an idea, a suggestion, or a wish in the form of a hashtag. We will collect them and organize them semantically; then, using them and a basic storyline with the features of a fairy tale, we will write a book composed from your ideas. Every hashtag will be present and it will be relevant to the events of the plot.
At the end of the work, we will create a special webpage in which it will be possible to track the hashtags, discover their authors and see where in the story they have been used.
The length of the book will vary depending on the number of hashtags received. In some experiments we made we found out that the ideal density is between 10 and 20 hashtags per page. According to our estimates, reaching our basic goal the book will be about 200 pages long.
Collection method and Guidelines for Hashtags
As soon as the campaign has ended, we will send you a survey via Kickstarter to collect your addresses for the shipment of the digital and hardcover books. With the same survey we will ask you to send us your suggestions in the form of a hashtag.
The hashtags can be simple (e. g. #boat, #cow, #moon, etc.) or complex (e. g. #ScifiCats, #DancingTable, #HorseRidingKnight).
Don’t be afraid to dare: free your creativity!
There are, however, some guidelines to follow. We WILL NOT accept hashtags with:
- proper nouns of real people / celebrities;
- registered trade names for commercial or promotional purposes;
- politically incorrect content;
- violent or sexual explicit content;
* In case your hashtag doesn't fit our guidelines, don’t worry, we will contact you directly to explain ourselves further and to ask you to send another hashtag.
Funding will be used for the translation from Italian to English, proofreading, the ebook edition as well as the print of the paper books. The hashtag funds will be used entirely for creating the plot.
The timing is estimated on the basis of the achievement of the first goal, and according to the proportional number of hashtags received. In the event of a greater number of hashtags, the time for the writing and translation may also vary.
The two authors
Andrea Binasco is student of narratology and a great lover of literature. After having won several poetry prizes, he decided to devote himself to teaching Italian abroad.
Matteo di Pascale is a writer and designer. He published the novel “La storia dell'ultimo arlecchino” and he designed “Intùiti Creative Cards”. He is currently working on several projects throughout Amsterdam.
Andrea and Matteo are best friends and they speak the same language: when Matteo needs advice about one of his projects, he calls Andrea for help and vice versa. Some years ago they wrote a book with individual biographies of their friends and then gave away some copies to help their friends re-discover the Christmas spirit so often taken for granted.
We want to become your precedent so... serve yourselves!
We believe the time is ripe for CrowdThinking especially with help from Kickstarter, a new inventive medium itself. Our greatest ambition is to create a new genre -- collaborative, reproducible, and open to everybody. Ultimately, we would love to see more videogames, movies, comics, and other products each sharing the same collaborative principle. So please do not hesitate to pick up what you like from our project and get inspired by CrowdThinking!
The whole team of #MUSE
Behind a great project there are always great people working hard to realise a dream:
- Matteo di Pascale & Andrea Binasco: the authors
- Luca Albino: financial manager and responsible for the shipping services
- Lani Shadduck: english copywriter, proofreader and editor
- Daniele Mazza: responsible for Public Relations
- Lucio Laugelli: responsible for audiovisual equipments
Risks and challenges
This will be an Unpredictable story but we will make sure that nothing unpredictable happens concerning the organization: having learned from a previous kickstarter campaign of unexpected great success, all the agreements with third parties (translator, printer, shipping service) have been pre-arranged and we are ready to turn your support into something memorable.
We look forward to receiving your hashtags and discovering which direction events will take. We are doing something unconventional – we do know it – and for this we are extremely excited and happy.
Matteo & Andrea
We would like to thank again all our friends and families who are supporting us with advices, smiles and hugs. Especially who helped us with the video: Lani, Davide, Eni, Maria Luisa, Stefano and of course Lucio (behind the camera!).
And of course Luca, who always believes in us and without whom this project would have not been possible: he's a real friend, and our first reader and supporter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
