What do you get when you combine a fitness tracker with a dungeon based role-playing game? Dungeon Tracker! Here at Asura Productions, our new project Dungeon Tracker is a hybrid fitness tracker/role-playing game designed not only for iPhone, but also from the ground up for Apple Watch (including support for watchOS 3). Dungeon Tracker brings the best of both worlds straight to your wrist, allowing you to get active and have fun doing it. The app offers all the features you expect from a fitness tracker, including step counting, heart rate monitoring, stats which show your overall progress and calories burned, distance traveled, plus daily, weekly and monthly goals.

Meanwhile, every real life step you take will be turned into mana (magic) points, which can be used to level up your customisable character (including your choice of gender), buy new equipment, and progress through the game's story while exploring numerous dungeons. Your progress in the real world becomes progress in the game world. We intend to release Dungeon Tracker on the iOS app store worldwide, including support for multiple languages (English, German and Japanese).

Don't worry though, just because Dungeon Tracker was originally designed for the iPhone and Apple Watch, that doesn't mean that an Android/Android Wear version is off the table. We want to bring Dungeon Tracker to as many of you as possible. So, naturally you'll find entries in the stretch goals section for Android versions. You can make it happen! We haven't forgotten about Fitbit owners either, which is why the very first stretch goal is for Fitbit integration! We've got Pebble owners covered too.

After looking at many fitness tracker apps on the App Store, there's one thing that really stood out to us. They're all pretty much the same. Sure, the layout changes around a bit, and some have nicer artwork than others, but at the end of the day you're just ending up with the same experience every time. At Asura, we knew that we could do better. Dungeon Tracker was designed to shake up the fitness tracker market, and make getting active with your mobile/wearable device more enjoyable than ever. 

At the same time, we also wanted to address two of the most common complaints that we see from Apple Watch owners:

1. There aren't enough quality games available.

2. The ones that are available are either simplified versions of existing iPhone apps, or aren't designed with the hardware's features and screen size in mind.

Well, at Asura Productions, we want to change that! We've set out to make nothing less than the best mobile fitness game ever created. Dungeon Tracker is being built from the ground up as both an iPhone app and an Apple Watch app, designed to make the most of what each piece of hardware has to offer, while also keeping the Watch's limitations in mind.

The Apple Watch is not an iPhone, and it shouldn't be treated like one. We know that for the best user experience an app's layout, menus and buttons need to be easy to tap on the small screen. You'll see in the Main Features section that we've got you totally covered on that front. We're also making it possible to select menu options by using the Apple Watch's crown, in case tapping isn't really your thing. More choice is always good.

iPhone and Apple Watch friendly design:

You know that your iPhone's screen is fairly large and easy to use, but the Apple Watch's screen size doesn't have to be a negative. We've designed the entire app with ease of use in mind, making use of simple layouts and large buttons. This means that selecting what you want to select is a breeze, and makes navigation as easy as possible. Using the app's main menu as an example in the screenshot below, it features just four large main buttons to make tapping and selecting easy.

Fitness tracking: 

Dungeon Tracker offers you all the fitness tracking that you expect. You've got the usual step counting and heart rate monitoring, plus lots of stats and goals to keep you going and staying motivated to progress in both real life and in the game. We have some example fitness stats in the screenshots below, but in the final product, you'll also be able to set your own custom goals based on your lifestyle and activity levels. 

 

You can view your current number of steps (in the form of mana points) at any time, regardless of whether you're viewing the main menu or you're in a dungeon. 

Equipment/Character customisation:

In Dungeon Tracker, you can access the store whenever you're not in a dungeon, which allows you to buy various pieces of new equipment for your character. The better the equipment, the higher the cost in mana points, and the prices will slowly scale up as you go in order to continue presenting a challenge. On the iPhone, the store makes use of a sliding menu where you view all the currently available equipment. Meanwhile, on the Apple Watch, the store's layout makes use of just four easy to tap buttons which make it simple to select which piece of equipment you want to buy. The store's equipment selection will refresh each time you enter the menu, and don't worry, there's no sneaky in-app purchases here.

In addition to increasing the stats of your character, the equipment will also change their appearance accordingly. Selecting the Explore option on the main menu will allow you to access the Equipment screen. You'll be able to change every piece of your character's equipment, resulting in a large number of different possible combinations and appearances. 

Character growth through leveling up:

No good role-playing video game is complete without being able to level up your character. Whenever your character levels up, their stats (such as their health, strength, and defense) will improve by a small amount each time. In the case of Dungeon Tracker, this allows for your character to improve over time, similar to how you do in real life. As we mentioned above, your character's stats can also be improved through buying and use new equipment over time.

Apple Watch complication support:

Dungeon Tracker will have its own Apple Watch complication. It'll show your current step count, as well as how many steps remaining until you reach the end of the dungeon that you're currently exploring, right on your watch face.

Dungeon exploration: 

This is where it all comes together. Selecting the Explore option on the main menu will also allow you to access the Dungeon Select screen. From there, you'll be able to see which dungeons you've unlocked so far, and choose one to enter. Your real life steps become your character's steps as they explore. Each dungeon will require an increasing number of steps in order for you to reach the end, so you'll need to keep active! Dungeons are also where your character's stats will be put to the test, as they encounter enemies that they'll have to fight in order to progress.

Each enemy has their own set of stats, which are compared against yours in order to determine how much damage you deal with each attack. The higher your strength, the faster they'll go down. You'll have to watch out though, since they'll also take a few swipes at you, so make sure to keep your eye on your health (HP) bar.  

We've designed the app to be fully playable on both iPhone and Apple Watch, but we know that the Watch isn't suited to complex game controls or long periods of interaction. With that in mind, we've designed the combat to be mostly automated, which we feel suits the app perfectly. This keeps things simple and moving quickly while keeping in mind that at the end of the day, this is still a fitness tracker, not a combat simulator. Just enjoy the show after your workout. Regardless of whether you're new to gaming, or a veteran, you'll find dungeon exploring to be very user friendly.

As we mentioned earlier on, when you first start the game, you'll have your choice of either a male or female character. There are three different designs available for each gender. Both characters can be customised with different equipment, but just in case you change your mind, you'll be able to change their gender at any time from the Options screen.

You can't have a role-playing game without epic loot to be found, and Dungeon Tracker doesn't disappoint. While exploring dungeons, you'll be able to discover various treasure chests of different rarities, which will contain increasingly large amounts of bonus mana points to give you an extra boost during your adventures. Just tap the screen to find out what's inside! 

There are currently 12 different dungeons planned for the game, with each being a little more challenging than the last. If you take a look at the rewards section on the right though, you'll see that the General Tier gives you the chance to design your own dungeon. These dungeons will be added to the total number in the game, allowing for up to 22 different dungeons in the final product. You'll have a whole world to explore. 

What about in-app purchases, you ask? 

Here at Asura Productions, we like to keep things simple. We don't like ads, or timers, or anything else that gets in the way of you enjoying our apps. That's why Dungeon Tracker uses a simple system where you download the app for free, create your character, try out the first couple of dungeons at your leisure, and then choose whether to unlock the rest of the game's dungeons with a small purchase of $4 USD/$5.50 AUD/€3.50. So, you can try before you buy and make your decision with confidence. Of course, if you're a Kickstarter backer above the Squire Tier, you'll have full access to every bit of the game right from the start.

We've got a small team of highly qualified, experienced staff assigned to Dungeon Tracker, who will continue working on the project full time.

Adam Shurey

Adam is the owner of Asura Productions. In addition to creating the concept and designs for Dungeon Tracker, he's the writer, project manager, and PR manager for the project. He's studied a Bachelor of Interactive Media, and also graduated from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia with a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing.

He's worked hard to get the app's design just right for both devices, and like the rest of the team, he's fully dedicated to making Dungeon Tracker as good as it can possibly be. He's also a passionate, life-long gamer with a strong interest in the gaming industry, which has also previously led him to work as a professional journalist for multiple websites.

Emil Goska

Emil is the artist/graphic designer for Dungeon Tracker. He created all of the artwork that you see on this project page. He's a highly talented artist, whose qualifications include a Master's Degree in Illustration and Multimedia Graphic Design. He has years of experience with working on game projects, and has worked on a few games of varying genres in the past, including a couple of successful Kickstarter projects, which you can view here and here. 

Frans Ahokas

Frans is a highly skilled programmer who has several years of experience with developing mobile apps for both iOS and Android, and is known for his efficient coding. He's worked on numerous mobile games in the past, including the highly popular Trivia Crack. He has previously worked for major mobile developer Zynga, providing coding for Zynga Poker. His qualifications include a Masters of Computer Applications and Computer Engineering. Frans is the lead programmer for Dungeon Tracker.

We've budgeted the project very carefully, taking all factors into account. This includes us allowing for some extra funds just in case of any unexpected expenses. You can see the full breakdown of our Kickstarter goal below:

 

Stretch Goal #1 - Fitbit Integration!

Stretch Goal #2 - Pebble Version

Use your Pebble with Dungeon Tracker! You'll have access to the same features as the Apple Watch version. Release window is January 2017.

Stretch Goal #3 - Android Version! 

$22,800 AUD

That's right, this is a big one. We want to bring Dungeon Tracker to as many people as possible, and if we hit this goal, that's exactly what will happen! A full release for Android will follow soon after the Apple Watch release, with an estimated release window of December 2016. 

Stretch Goal #4 - Android Wear Version!

$26,800 AUD

This is the other big one. We'd love to see Dungeon Tracker on both Android and iOS wearable devices, and we're sure that you would too. If we hit this goal, then the app will be available on every available platform. A full release for Android Wear will follow soon after the Apple Watch release, with an estimated release window of January 2017. 

Stretch Goal #5 - More Equipment.

With this goal, Dungeon Tracker's equipment gets a boost. You'll be able to customise and improve your character with even more unique pieces of equipment. 

Stretch Goal #6 - More Detailed Animations.

The app's visuals get better! You'll get to enjoy more detailed animations for the characters, equipment, and enemies to keep your adventure interesting. Looking good!

Asura Productions is a small, independent Australian game developer based in Melbourne, and founded in October 2015. Risks and challenges

Game development can be unpredictable, as any development studio can tell you. While we've done our best to plan for every eventuality, the fact is that unexpected things can happen. We will do our absolute best to deliver Dungeon Tracker and the rewards by the deadline that we have set. Our team will be working full-time hours on this project. For any reason, if we discover that there will be delays to the delivery of either the app or the rewards, we will be sure to notify you right away through a Kickstarter update.

We're still a fairly new mobile developer, but we'll work hard to produce a final product that will not only meet your expectations, but hopefully even surpass them.
